I think another key area lacking from black owned beauty brands is business education. There has been such a push to discount the significance of a college education in favor of entrepreneurship, but in my opinion, as a result of this, the trend has been brands having meteoric “moments” and calling it success. Only to see them not have true longevity. Mented’s owners are both Harvard business graduates, who planned their company’s foundation as an MBA requirement (I THINK this is the origin, I could be wrong about this detail, however the education point still stands). As a result, you see consistent, steady growth and strategic expansion that primed them for (now) 5 lucrative venture funding rounds. I’m not saying it’s possible for every black owner to go to Harvard, but it’s critical that they have a desire to access the education or to partner with other black students and leverage strengths to build together. Just my thoughts. Love your breakdowns! ❤

I use one of my mented bronzers EVERY time I do my face. Their lip liners are smoooth, foundation brush is superb, lipsticks are lovely, lipglosses have great pigment and wear well, and their foundations are thicky thicc but moisturizing and have the matches for the brown girlies. Their products are a luxury but well worth it. I haven’t purchased in a while because I just left the military and didn’t have many opportunities to wear what I bought. But.. I would hate to see them go. They presented as a very classy based brand
@jostinaluver10 ай бұрын
I noticed The Lip Bar is having a moment. I always seeing their skin tint and liquid lipsticks being hyped. Would love to see you try their new cream blushes they launched for Target to see if they're dark skinned girlie approved.
@AJ5690910 ай бұрын
I have the powder blush and a bronzer/contour palette. All are nice. The blush from the palette and then making a separate blush only, the formulation is different. Not bad but not great. Never tried the skin tint. The liquid mattes are nice. Great color, can be drying but that is expected of mattes. Shayagne tried tlb before though. Search on YT. They do have several new products though that just hit Target in the past couple weeks that may be worth trying.

People are going to forget about them if they don’t get back out there. The out of stock, then finally being under construction website has been going on for several months now. They were the first brand after Estée Lauder that I found my foundation match in mid 2022. I even did a quick video because I was so happy. I need a new one but a las. Thanks for the update. I’m trying out the new Ami Colè foundation stick today. Hint hint, I’d like your review on it too though.

Mented has been sold off to a white private equity firm according to news reports. One of the cofounders left the brand in January 2024, the other is posting about Taylor Swift and Bey on TikTok. There are other BOBs who take makeup more seriously that need our support
@IngridAsInBergman9 ай бұрын
I believe Mented has already been sold. It won’t be announced yet until the investment (contracts are signed) then the announcement, launch and possible rebranding will come almost at once. The FTc has its own rules regarding when businesses can and have to go public when they restructuring.

Very interesting theory. I would like to hear more from you on this? I think they will fold ultimately even if they rebrand. Maybe i’ve missed it. But NOBODY talked about Grassfield ? I know it’s a not beauty , but a clothing company owned by 2 African twin sisters. They ‘ lost ‘ their company to their investor. Kinda like how the owner of Black UP make got his company stolen by his white investor. I hate how all these black companies can’t seem to just exist without eventually selling , going out of businesses or getting stolen by big (white) companies. I’m Still mad about Shea Moisture. We had a GOODT thing going on , i had everything i needed for my hair from their lines. I love Mented Cosmetics, but as a someone in their target demographic, I hope they do more to stand out. When they debuted, I was impressed with their sleek, elevated packaging, Italian formulas, and everyday neutral makeup aesthetic. I was hoping that they would stay at the mid-high end range and was a bit surprised to see them partner with CVS. Nothing wrong with drugstore makeup (30-40% of my makeup is affordable,) but I hope they continue to fill the gap of higher end Black-owned makeup. I think if they position themselves as a competitor to Estée Lauder, Lancôme, Anastasia Beverly Hills, they will do well.

In order for a business to scale they need millions of dollars. Sadly, black women do not get that type of funding. In addition, when they do they have to give up more percentage of their company. As the business grows you continually have to get funding especially you grew fast.Then you basically have your investors taking over.
