I'm just hoping that Mattel doesn't get over their heads now that Barbie's back on the spotlight. Just because they're uping the quality slightly above their usual standards doesn't mean they should charge 50$. Especially since other doll brands can deliver the same quality at lower price. Hoping that it's the likeness they're charging more... I'd love to see this up in quality not just for the movie line but for all of Barbie hopefully. Nonetheless these are really pretty dolls so here's hoping that Barbie can get her glamour renaissance that she deserves.

We’ll see after the movie hype dies down. It might go back to the way it was next year unless Mattel keeps up with marketing a ton. The younger crowd seems to love the large eyed big head dolls these days.

Barbie's outfit is too cute. I appreciate Ken's jean details, but I'd rather have the cheaper version in stripes. These seem more like $30 dolls to me, but I personally don't think a doll must be made to move to justify a higher price. That's more of a bias some made to move fans have because they want every doll they like to be made to move by default, but not all collectors are into posing, doll photography, or action figure style bodies like they are. Many Barbies cost more but have stiffer bodies because the price is determined moreso by the fashion and styling, not the articulation. The "every doll should be made to move" argument in the Barbie community is kind of like the "all Barbies should have high heeled feet" or "all Kens should have rooted hair" arguments. One thing's not necessarily better than the other, it's a personal preference.

Or 5 Rainbow High dolls at 70% off. I have gotten three PC dolls, Kia Hart, and two jr. high dolls for less than what one of these sells for. The outfits aren't bad, but I don't like the wide grins on these dolls. They look like brother and sister. My best option is to wait for the fashion packs to go clearance so I can put them on dolls I like better. Ken's outfit would look better on the buff Looks Ken from this year.

I prefer these kind of body sculpts as I find the mtm joints not that graceful looking specially the arms however I’m not linking that miss Barbara can’t reach the right angles (her body was listed as “gigi” in Mattel creations idk what other dolls have it) but Kenneth has the new standard body for the Kens and although it lack the ankle joints it seems to pose good enough so I’m glad about that

One price comparison I have for these dolls is the recent Barbie Rewind series. Those started out at $40 for detailed outfits and several accessories, but over the series of eight dolls, the price went up to $45 and the outfits became more simple. However, the Rewind dolls generally go on sale. Overall, I don't think the movie dolls are worth more than the Rewind dolls on a strictly value basis. I suppose it makes sense for Mattel and retailers to price them higher then reduce the less popular ones that sit around. It will be interesting to see how much the heavy promotion of the movie will drive sales of the dolls at a premium price.

With around 15 dolls scheduled for release (several more to come) and this price tag, I think very few people are going to be able to get all the ones they want. So far, I have ordered this Barbie and the 3-outfit fashion pack directly from Mattel Creations because that worked out best for me in Canada. I guess it's good that so many of the Barbies have the same face mold so it feels more like just having to choose the outfit(s) I like best. I think the Ken(s) will likely go on sale, so I will wait for that. I am looking forward to the rollerblading Barbie and Ken, but those outfits are even more simple, so I hope they are not also $50.

First off i gotta say I love that you take your time do showcase and dissect every single piece of clothing and accessories the dolls you’re reviewing have, its such a pet pieve of mine when I’m watching a review and the reviewer doesn’t even bother to take off the clothes! About the dolls… think it’s crazy that these movie dolls have been so “impressive” for most of us but compared to playline competition on the market- they’re okay. We’re just soo used to modern barbie/mattel being a reference for cheap manufacturing that its “impressive” when they use actual fabrics and separate pieces, or give us good hair and non pixelated faces (bare minimum for a doll, especially considering barbie is the most famous fashion doll) They can definitely make amazing dolls that don’t cost an arm and a leg but choose not to.… these dolls just don’t impress me, maybe if they were $20/25 each. Still, im left with a bittersweet taste because even for a movie as monumental as this- they still couldn’t commit all the way to deliver products that feel worth the price, and still rely on printed on details (printed on the lacing details on the $50 western barbie, for example).

Do I think that these are worth 50 dollars? Of course not, BUT they are amazing dolls, both quality wise and aesthetically as well. As someone who also doesn't collect as many boy dolls, I LOVE this ken. Again, I wouldn't pay 50 dollars for him, but he is definitely up there in my tier list of boy dolls.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who squealed when they found a petticoat under the skirt lol. And it's so well made too!!! Imo you picked the best of the bunch as your first Barbie movie doll, the others are lovely but none of them have the same level of detail and piece count as Plaid! I wonder if this one is meant to be THE Barbie movie doll in the same vein as the Barbie Princess dolls coming in their "finale" outfits instead of the clothes they wear for the majority of the movie.

I love them and they're beautiful. I'm super impressed with the quality. I just wish they were the 35-40 price. I really hope they do more movie dolls for 25-30 because my general budget for a single doll is 30. Not saying there's something wrong with dolls priced higher, some are definitely worth the price. But I want more that I personally can afford to buy. As a teacher, I do have to try to stick to my budget.

Our Big W stores here in Australia (ughhh the price is going to be *ridiculous* I just know it...) are having a massive toy sale and the catalogue had a small advertisement for a lot of the dolls so I will be guessing they will be hitting stores pretty soon. I have to agree with another comment I own 5 barbie Mattel dolls total and only one nice signature barbie doll the rewind series and they are only $45 in the same price range but, your given way more and that's modern comparison there boxed in cool VHS tapes style packing, cassette type shaped stands,a real fabric duffle bag,vintage barbie brush,work out steps, dumbbell set,painted details,real looking sweatband/legwarmers/headband etc... I'm confused on how these barbie movie dolls are more they very much seem like $30 dolls even now especially for a big company like them.

I went to Target and looked at the movie dolls they had there a few weeks before the movie released. I was not impressed with the pink gingham Barbie, but was tempted by the blue plaid. I ended up buying President Barbie because I love her ball gown and President sash. :) Like someone else said, I can't afford the whole line of these so picked a fave. I kind of wish I'd gotten the blue plaid one, too, now,. It's no longer a question of whether they're worth $50. Resellers have hiked it up to $150-300 per doll, which is ridiculous. :( I gotta say that it makes me sad to hear how low your expectations for Barbie quality are today. I grew up with my sister's 1960s Barbies and my 1970s dolls and the clothes had metal snaps and darts and cuffs were common and many times things looked like they came off the cover of Vogue. I've started collecting and building on what I still had. The older dolls show wear/time, but still look amazing compared to some of the newest dolls I see.

I still don’t understand the price point. Rainbow high dolls undeniably have better quality clothes and the designs are far more elaborate too, yet those dolls aren’t $50. $50 is actually low priced for collectable fashion dolls right now. Integrity Toys dolls are usually around $150, Mizi dolls are about $100 as well. In some lines, $50 will get you a pair of shoes. Even MGA is hitting or exceeding $50 for play line dolls. Based on inflation alone, $50 now would have been $35 in 2006. That's not taking into consideration the increase almost everything has seen since the pandemic. As far as the articulation, I would also like to see MTM articulation but there are those that hate it, just like some that complained when the Silkstone line included articulated dolls. They prefer the smoother lines of this body type. I loved the video, you were very detailed in showing off the dolls and the speaking about the pros and cons.

Metal jewelry with all sorts of crystals and embellishments like actual jewelry, clothing which is lined and hemmed, better fabrics, fabric shoes, sprayed faces, gorgeous set hair and more. These are literal playline doll, produced like playline too. That barbie in pink dress has only 2 layers and glitter detailing for $50🥱🥱

@@DoIIyMama, these aren't playline, they are Black Label collectables. The two playline dolls are $25 each (the same price as Barbie Extra dolls). There is a difference in the quality of details and clothing between the $25 and $50 dolls. The pricing is on par for Black Label, take a look at the pricing for the celebrity dolls that were also Black Label. This is why they come in a larger display box, with more details (these dolls do have better fabric clothing, more clothing layers, better jewelry and better sewing details), a doll stand and are shipped in a cardboard shipper to protect the box. Barbie has different levels of collectable dolls but many people seem to believe that any Barbie you can purchase in a retail store is what used to be called Pink Label (playline), and they expect it to be priced as such. The Barbie reviewed in this video has a fabric hat, five fabric pieces of clothing (jacket, top, skirt, petticoat, underwear), snap closures instead of velcro and better details. All of which were praised in the video. The main critique in the video is the body articulation for the price. The problem here is there are a large amount of vocal Barbie collectors that don't like articulation, they love the model muse body because they feel the articulation causes ugly lines on the body. Some even go to the point of arguing a collector level doll shouldn't have a playline body (made to move). Being both a Barbie and Integrity doll collector, I believe the pricing for these dolls is fair. Even Integrity has seen an increase in pricing in recent years. Most of my recent Integrity dolls purchases were between $165-$200 each

I’m extremely excited about the movie and I want to buy the cars but as for the dolls, it’s very much meh for me. I could be biased as I’m not excited about the quality of recent Barbies and I’m currently collecting Barbies from 2009 - 2013 which are so stunning in comparison. Also, I’m not a fan of her face mold. In Australia, they’re $100 each and considering what stunning vintage barbie I could get for $100… the movie dolls are certainly not worth the cost, they’re a pass for me.

These are not worth $50. Barbie has been giving us trash quality so it's easy to make it look better than that. However, Rainbow high and shadow high clothes and hair are better to me. I just think Mattel needs to try harder. Barbie deserves articulation in everything but the swim dolls for little little kids. And she deserves detailed clothes of nice materials. She started as a FASHION MODEL. It shows that the past few years they don't care about anything but the style dolls for $100. Because even the Looks outfits stink now.

Tbh this ken is the only standout release. Barbie doesn't look like Margot Robbie at all, more like a widely smiling Millie face and it's disappointing.

As someone with a business, the consumer has no concept of the costs that goes into designing, making and shipping products. Inflation is real. If it costs more for you, it cost more for businesses. Someone posted on Instagram that inflation doesn’t effect dolls because they’re plastic. I don’t know if that’s immaturity or naïveté.

I definitely said nothing about inflation in this video and I actually specifically said that a $50 doll 20 years ago is not worth comparing to this which is... me acknowledging inflation so I have no idea what this comment is coming from. The consumer has a concept via comparison for sure though and I can name 100 modern dolls that cost less or this exact price that feel more worth the price but I also discuss alternative explanations for the price (such as licensing). Regardless of any of this that does not change that I, objectively, cannot fathom a $50 price point for these dolls. Beautiful? Absolutely. High quality? Absolutely. But worth $50 to me? No. I'm not going to bootlick a company ever on this channel. I have a normal job that I use to buy a large amount of my dolls, I have bills, a mortgage and other things to purchase. just like most other consumers. If I am spending $50 on something I really need to be blown away- I was not blown away here. As someone who has had two businesses in the past: one with selling homemade items and the other with selling imported items- the MOST important thing was always finding a way to create a product that was the highest quality possible at a price that consumers would actually pay for the product. Mattel *literally* was recently officially quoted as saying that they've learned that consumers will spend more money for lesser quality in order to explain their current business model. That is where I believe this new pricing is coming from. However this review is my own opinions so none of anything above matters, right? In my opinion they are not worth $50 despite being very cool

I bet they ARE paying Margot for her likeness cuz shes the only 1 who got a new face sculpt & whose picture is used on box art. Rest of them use existing face sculpts & don’t have actors pictured.
