Because a form of attachment is there which I recognise, but people nowadays can only compare it to a romantic relationship. I don't think it is. I honestly thought some were exaggerating about "amatonormativity" reaching annoying levels, but this alongside a few other stories make me realise they're quite right! Leia and Vader -- finding there is good in someone you thought was wholly evil (she's his daughter) Persephone and Hades - training her to deepen her sensitivity (initiate/spiritual daughter) Sophie and Howl - finding his contract and breaking it, finding her own magical power (psychic friendship) While all exist on a fluid continuum, it's really strange for me how long I've been looking for music that could express the relationship in non-romantic terms without any success (invariably, all songs turn romantic, but for e.g. Leia that's jarring). It just doesn't seem to be at the forefront of popular imagination right now.
