When I watched movies like this in the past as a young girl, I knew at that time just how fortunate I was to live with my parents and where we lived was heaven compared to the hardships all of the people in both wars had to go through. Having watched this one that I've never seen before, reinstated the long ago held belief that my problems are nothing compared to what they went through. So well written and acted, the bleakness of the black and white really drove home the wretchedness of it all and, all the while many maintaining their resolve, stealing happiness at every turn they could. To see such a young Glen - so clean and freshed face and the hopes of a great career and Fredric Marsh a consummate actor both played off each other so very well. In those days they knew the real importance of family and love compared to what we see today. Both ladies delivered their roles in its emotional upheaval they had to live through as well. It touched my heart and thank you for this upload.

Unfortunately my dear it's starting all over again. The lockups in 2020 was just the beginning. If the fascist W H O gets it's way they'll be more worldwide lockups anytime they say & forced v a x & v a x passports & those that refuse will be treated as criminals & refused access to food & travel worse than 2020 & even lockup camps like we had in Australia that people had to pay for who were locked up. The future is very bleak for the younger generations.

Fredric March gives a superb performances in every film he was in, and this is no exception .I can only think of one other actor, during the great Hollywood era that could compete with him and that is Spencer Tracey. Glenn Ford as 'Baby' does an excellent job, really very fine work. The cinematography is excellent. This is a great print. The extremely close, close-ups where the actors don't speak. but reveal all their emotions, are really exquisite. March,Sullivan, and Ford all excel in this very difficult task. Leonid Kinskey, the major comic reliefs in this film plays it just right. All in all this is a very good film, the flaws are minor. Spencer and von Stroheim's final scene together is breathtakingly delivered. If you enjoy good film making or simply enjoy a good movie, this is a film you should not miss.

Thank you for sharing this film with us. A mind-wrenching set in motion by cataclysmic political events, social obstacles and yet, despite the plethora of negative events, grim determination surrounded by strangers but seemingly all grasping for dear life to hope for, a fight for, working for, outwitting the opposition for a more positive, life affirming outcome. Knowing it was a movie, knowing Eric Maria Remarque's novel set the idea up and knowing several of the actors other films were way diverse from this one, my head, heart, spirit and raison d'être became s deeply personal hope the characters succeeded in their relentless pursuit of their own personal secure journey. Wrung out like a wet dishrag here. Frederick March, Margaret Sullivan, Glenn Ford and supporting cast worked their magic.❤🎉😊

Gender confusion and homosexuality indoctrination. Experimental sex changes on children sometimes without a parent's consent. Or threats to have your child taken away from you if you refuse to go along the propaganda on gender confusion? If this isn't Nazisim. I dont what it is. Add to it the intolerance of religion especially Christianity. When people become intimidated by the authorities they will do anything to save their skin.

The real star of this film, is brilliant production designer William Cameron Menzies, who gives it the necessary atmosphere needed, it probably helped that it had to be made independently, due to it being a tricky time before the U.S. entered the war, so Hollywood was trying to tread carefully with their movie content so as not to rock the political boat in Europe, which was a huge market for them. I watched this just about every Sunday morning when they showed it on A&E in the 80's, then grabbed the Ivy Video & DVD versions as soon as they came out. But I've never seen it look so pristine than here, I knew it had been restored but couldn't track it down, so thanks for sharing!

I feel that way about commercials but have no say in how many KZbin inserts into our movies. Keep in mind that we have to pay to license the movies and they only way we can afford is by depending on ad revenue, or pennies from KZbin Premium. Personally, I subscribed to KZbin Premium ($12.99/month), which allows me to everything on KZbin without commercials. Ad blockers = no revenue = no channel, so please subscribe and give us another try.

Unfortunately it's starting all over again.

Nella versione italiana, come sottofondo musicale all'addio a Maria, c'è l'Adagio della Quinta Sinfonia di Gustav Mahler. Poi utilizzata da Luchino Visconti per "Morte a Venezia".
