Coming from a guitarist of 24 years I can definitely tell you it’s a modern strat and definitely a road worn series maybe even a vintera worn series.. but a real vintage strat from the 50’s through the 60’s will first have the serial number stamped into the neck plate not on the headstock.. headstock serial numbers didn’t arrive until the 70’s strats and they were waterslide decal on the front face of the headstock.. second modern wiring it’s not push back cloth wire.. and thirdly the pickup bobbins aren’t gray like a real 50’s strat of that era would have been.. just too many other things to spot it’s a modern road worn

As an artist who frequently uses weathering techniques, I can say with absolute certainty the " rust" is a thick oil paint wash. You can really tell on the tops of the saddles from how the "rust" has a hard thick edge, the trem block where its rather thick "rust" for the loacation , as well as the brush marks are quite prominent. Same thing with the pickup covers and guard. You can see where the brush used for it had some stray strands and were lightly touching outside of the area the paint was applied.

Relic'd hardware is easy; put it in a tote with an open container of vinegar and the vapor from it will begin to give the hardware an aged look. Vapor will also get inside of tuners so you need to think about protecting them or age them differently. This works better with nickle than it does chrome, for the latter you can use stronger acids to speed things up and get more dramatic results. Monitor accordingly.

In about 1980 I was in a band in Arcata California. Ran into it another guitar player in a band called rolling Bob. He had a 1954 Strat that he claimed that he found in a barn when he was cleaning it with a pitchfork. I thought this was total BS until I took a look at it. It had three holes in the front where he had actually hit it with the pitchfork. He told me all the strings were almost rusted through when he found it. I saw it with my own eyes. This guy was actually a phenomenal guitar player can't remember his name. I mean what are the odds of that happening. True story.

Other signs- -When the pickguard is removed, there is random shielding foil on the body right where the "road worn" stamp is. -The sticker in the control cavity was cut out of the finish to hide the numbers, you can see the light spot where it was. -"rust" has brush marks in it, no pitting. -When the neckplate was removed, the finish under it was perfect. -Frets are not made of copper, they do not turn green.

The frets being so oxidized (the blue green) means the copper in the fretwire (it's a thing) would have been subject to extensive, enduring moisture, it doesn't happen overnight. But the wood all looks brand new (not counting the relicing), with zero moisture damage. Roadworn guitars have only a nitro coat no poly base. Note the dust comes off easy but moisture makes dust stick to everything like goo. The only thing that could do this deliberately was maybe he sprayed all the metal down with dilute acid, but couldn't do it assembled as the nitro or wood could have been damaged. So I think he separately acid bathed all the parts and the fretboard (fretboard damage apparent), and then assembled it, and then dusted it up after. EDIT: I also like the salt water bath as mentioned in comments below.

Hahaha my friend...fellow fiddler for 30+ trips around the sun here, good call. I just watched this a few hours ago and also called out BS just a few minutes in. I have reconditioned a DeArmond SG copy with gold foils that sat in a shed in Texas for 2 years. Besides the obvious stuff of avoiding showing certain things on camera, the perfect cleanliness of the pickup cavity and back of the pick guard made me know it was 100% made up. There would have been cobwebs in every nook and cranny of that thing. Also...not a darn thing worth any value in that shed....except a Fender strat? No way. In a humid environment with a little assistance that kind of rust wouldn't take long. I hate to say this, but I speculate that guitar was set out there to "age" when the guy decided to start his channel a few months ago. Banging around on the walls would create that amount of dust in short order. Other comments about the rust, like the buried threads rusting are also on point. If part 2 isn't in the can yet...you can bet your reaction and the comments are going to affect heavily what part 2 looks like. Also, on a sidenote, I wonder he spent so much time polishing the frets when it clearly needs at least a fret level.
@stubonics2 жыл бұрын
The body routes look like the current method Fender have been using since 2018 or so, especially the trem cavity. It is hard to tell with the sunburst finish, but it looks more like the way they route the Player Series guitars after painting them. The pickup cavity looks like it was painted after routing, so the same could be true of the back side of course. Regardless, it looks fairly modern in the routing.

The restoration video landed in my "recommended" list the other day so I watched it. I thought that the "finding the guitar in the shed" portion was fake, and that the dirt on the guitar looked conveniently uniform. But I hadn't considered that the entire premise might be fake, and that it really wasn't an old guitar with rusted out parts, but a perfectly fine Mexican Strat with some old rusted parts replacing the correct parts. I'll be interested in seeing Part 2, and looking a lot more closerly for signs of fakery in the restoration process.

I think this is the same guy that pulled a cassette stereo out of a muddy creek. You could see as he was washing the entire amp with a rag in a bucket of water how the silk screen printing was almost gone. Once "restored" it looked and played like it just came out of the box. Not a scratch and the lettering was perfect. I asked how he was able to get the trim pots, transformers, motors and relays working and he replied saying it was because Korean parts were much better than US parts. I'd say he started with a perfectly good player and stitched the restoration in reverse.

A guy walks into a shed with a go pro or other device. If i walked into a shed, id be moving things around searching for anything He Finds an abandoned guitar quickly. Frets are nickel plated. I have nickels in my pocket that are not rusty. Even more peculiar is the green which would indicate over 20 years of oxidized copper on the frets. I didnt get a good look at the headstock, but i didn’t see an entrance for a truss rod. Pickups are coiled copper on a magnet. They looked brand new. No rust, no oxidation of the copper. Not even brown. Small wires like that would fall apart when you touched them. He was quick to take the plate off the body. Didn’t flip both sides. No damage underneath. there should at least be a square mark with some rust. Should be four holes for the plate. There were two others that were smaller under the fingerboard just sayin

The metal fittings have probably been artificially attacked with chemicals that made that rust. Soak a piece of steel in cola for a couple days and the carbonic acid rusts the hell out of it. As for the copper there are all kinds of ways to get the green patina. Verdigris is considered attractive for some projects so there are commercisl treatments out there to get it.

If you watch the video carefully, you will see the guy remove a screw from the Pick-guard. The screw was co-called rusted from one end to the other, look closely at the Pick-guard hole where the screw came out of. Where's the rust marks in the plastic from the screw? The plastic would have been stained for good especially where the screw was touching the Pick-guard hole that it came out of. That plastic was a white as a new pick-guard. No rust stain marks seen at all. A rust like dye would have stained that area seeing the screw was touching that area when tight, but I don't see any stains at all. Those rust stains change the color of plastic that can't be removed no matter how hard you try to do so. Take some old rusty screws you might have around the house, and place it a clear plastic bowl and leave it sitting on in the weather all summer long. Don't touch it. Let the rain get at it, and later the sun dry it up, and watch the plastic take on rust stains. Ove time, those rust stains work their way into the plastic leaving stains that can't be removed no matter how hard you try and remove them. Video show two places on the pick-guard where rusted screws were removed, and both are clean and white as a whistle showing no signs of rust stains at all. The intonation screws are not rusted on the bridge area, like the ones holding the bridge down. Why is there such a great difference in rusting between the two sets of screws when so close together on the guitar? Both should be rusted about equally, wouldn't you say? Same applies to the String riser screws. Looks pretty easy to raise and lower the string heights before being cleaned up. Tremolo arm appears so rusty, it should show signs of metal pitting once cleaned up. On Most Fender Strats the metal under the bridge where the springs ar attached is bare metal not protected by a chrome covering like that of the chrome covered screws. The metal under the bridge is not affected with rust and much as the screws that are normally chrome plated for both shininess and protection against rust. Doesn't make sense that the screws are far more rusted than the un-protected metal under the bridge including the springs themselves I also noticed the control pots were never shown in video, and they would have been just as rusted out (or dirty) as the screws were if moister got to the screws and bridge. They are not protected by paint or chrome finish. Wonder why they weren't shown and cleaned along with the rest of all the parts shown? There was a small rust stain shown at the beginning of the video at one of the back Pick-ups nearest the bridge, yet no stain is seen once pickups are put back in place ... where is that stain? If set in plastic, he wouldn't have been able to get it out. There is some pitting on the cleaned-up tuners but far less than what should have been seen from what I saw at the beginning of video. No, I'd say this video is a fake using a well-used Fender Strat that has some age to it before the video began. The dirt on it at the beginning appeared more like burnt wood ashes from a well-used wood stove.

Interesting that the metal components are completely rusted, yet the wood is pristine.

How convenient that the guitar was laying against the wall instead of being buried under the rubble.

There a a few fake restoration channels. The rust always just wipes away....like water based paint would lol.

"How did he get it so rusty and dirty?" Easy. Paint, and lots of it. Maybe some dirt sprinkled in, at the most.

Either he didn't know the guitar was there, in which case why was he filming? Or he did know, in which case why did he go to a different barn first? Definitely fake.

You can get chemicals to make metal rust really fast. They do this with everything from firearms to scooters, motorcycles etc.

You can spray salt water on steel, and it will rust pretty quickly. I've seen it done on gun oil videos.

soaking the parts in (incredibly corrosive) muratic acid mixed with vinegar will take the finish off of metal, unfinished metal oxidizes & corrodes fast… unless that rust is a painted-on effect… like if you watch videos on _”how to create a vintage metal sign”,_ you can learn to create a rust effect with paint…

I don't have a Fender but my 30 something year old guitar has rust going diagonal across the neck plate from the way my hand touches it. It's not rusted the same all the way across.

I spent a good couple of hours googling the serial number and looking up pics and it didn’t seem to add up. It was like a Frankenstrat when you broke everything down. Also I want to mention I could not find the serial number in Fenders inventory.

No moisture or temperature damage? Just dunked the metal in some corrosive liquid while he sanded the neck and body in places. Maybe with the popularity of the video he'll get a Gibson Murphy Lab and 'Rescue' a genuine '59 Les Paul?
