funnily enough, the author of Makeine is actually a big fan of Dangers in My Heart, so Yanami's and Yamada's "popular girl that eats a lot" isn't a random comparison, actually both of them also share the same first name: Anna :3 also the school looks less "pristine" and such, because iirc it's set in a public school instead of, how often in other anime, private school. (also i think the school is close to the coast so that's why it has so much rust everywhere)

I'm glad you decided to react to this show. It's great. I love how Yanami literally embodies typical “losing heroine” traits. Blue hair, short hair, childhood friend, encouraging their crush to go for their “rival” in a scene that looks like the episode 12 of any other romance anime, etc. And fun fact: There's an official website for the anime that tracked the amount of calories Yamani consumed in each episode.

The passion for animation in this show is incredible. The quality is on par with a movie, making it enjoyable just to watch the visuals. The ED was also created using cel animation, a technique making a comeback in Japan after 10 years, generating buzz.

I picked it up on a whim and ended up binging it over the course of two nights. The sleepy workdays were worth it though! Fantastic show. Like you said the production is really hitting with everything from the voice acting to the animation and storyboarding.

The aged metals and such is because the locations in this series are real places in and around Toyohashi, Aichi, Japan. Not far from Nagoya and only a few train stations down the line from Toyota, where cars are made. The light novels took place in Toyohashi too. Toyohashi itself wouldn't be considered rural, but sea shore is really close (thus all the rust) and not too far in the opposite direction are the mountains of Aichi and Gifu. By the way, Prez's pronunciation is right. Makeine is pronounced like the last name of the late American politician John McCain. (It's a combination of the word for losing, Make (pronounce Mah-keh) and the last couple of Japanese katakana character that make up the word for "Heroine" (pronounced "een")

I like that the school looks older or lack of maintenance, its a way to show that there is no idealized vision of romance. If you watch other romance anime you will always see perfect schools, it's a way to show the protagonists vision! or so I think.

I think the school is gorgeous because of that detailed, lived in look. But I’ve always loved old metal and wood. Somebody said that they’re by the coast as well so with the salty air it makes sense, great world building along with the thematic connection you brought up.

The show has a great blend of humor and dramatic moments. I'd suggest just embracing the flow and enjoying when it surprises you or pulls at your heartstrings. It'll do both and in really fun ways. Excited for you guys to see more. Every single character is appealing and also has flaws. Friend group animes are among my favorites and this one qualifies 100%.

Also this show is really good, makes me all nostalgic for my high school drama, my friend group was so extra! 😂 And I really like Nukumizu’s blasé affect- like he just wants to do his own thing and not get drawn into drama, but he’s secretly just a messy bitch at heart and lives for that kinda thing.
