actually, the windmill incident was overblown. He was never in any danger. in fact - it was set up so that only his hair and forehead were only ever under water, if you look closely you can see this in the video. His nose and mouth stayed above the water line at all times (most likely for insurance / safety reasons). The boating accident aboard his boat "Drum" was a very dangerous situation that has been "under stated".

I was born 98' and I am so happy for my fathers fucking great taste in music. He and my mom lived in Berlin during the 80s and everything I listen to is approved by them. The first time I heard this song was in the car. Maybe 5 years old. I vibed so hard. I still remember it

When this song came out, honestly all of us female fans probably thought wth is this?? It’s a great song and video, but crazy compared to their stuff before… Except.. you know how you love that bass? Yah! That very talented bass player was THE most gorgeous man to walk Planet Earth back then! They were all sexy and gorgeous.. but John Taylor was OTHERWORLDLY beautiful!! His beauty was unparalleled. And much to the thrill of all his female fans.. he was the one strapped to the car!!! 😁Mmmm😊❤

Amazing tune and just some info on that windmill prop. During filming the windmill actually stopped/broke down with Simon strapped to it and dangerously had him underwater when it jammed. They had to quickly get to his rescue so as not to drown. Simon also cheated death when his high performance Sailboat capsized and he was upside down in it struggling to get out and almost totally drowned. It was during one of those sailing competitions races. So twice, water almost claimed his life. I believe now he also is into flying those 3d Acrobatic Stunt Planes. Quite the thrill seeker. And yes Duran Duran were the innovator’s when it came to the music videos. Total artists. The true pioneers of video music tech.

9:30!lol!This moment Simon was really terryfied cause he hadn't been warned about this fake monster's 'biting attempt' right behind him.(Had seen a video at the time about the making of this expensive video production and how some shots were done.)So his terror was real and his reaction was natural and of course everyone laughed after this!

This video was supposed to be a movie. there was a book called the wild boys that Russell Mulcahy bought the rights for (Russell is the video director for many of DD's videos and was a pioneer of music vids in the 80's). Outside of music videos, he's also pretty well known for directing the cult classic, Highlander. DD knew about this wild boys purchase through their relationship with Russell and wanted to do the soundtrack for the movie. The song was written for that purpose, but the movie deal fell through... so they created this video as a mini version of what the movie would have been like.

William S Burroughs wrote the book of the same name. Russell Mulcahy got the film rights. Simon read the book and asked Russell about doing a song, inspired by it. Russell agreed with the proviso that he do the video as a "proof of concept" for the film he intended to make but, thus far, has not.

This also part of a larger video called Arena, where Doctor Duran Duran (a character from the movie Barbarella) comes back from exile and sees this band carrying his name and wants to take them out. So Arena is part concert and part story. The wild boys sequence is actually longer and was shot to the extended remix.

Duran Duran who were, incidentally named after the arch nemesis of Barbarella in the comics and film of the same name. Warboys (Wildboys) has that Mad Max feel to it, so much so that they were brought to life in Mad Max - Fury Road as only the Aussies can do. The look of the video was heavily influenced by the movie ‘Mad Max 2’ (or ‘Road Warrior’ in the US) which came out a few years earlier, also being directed by an Aussie, Russell Mulcahy, who did the cult classic ‘Razorback’ (seek it out and watch it, a horror film about a giant Boar, good popcorn fun!), and the big hit ‘Highlander’. So it was very much of the moment and uber-cool. It’s actually the only studio song on their excellent live album ‘Arena’.
@JOHNNYSGIRL19602 жыл бұрын
This song was for a movie based on the book The Wild Boys but it wound up not being made so the director decided to use his money to make the video for this song instead.
@eamonconnelly80292 жыл бұрын
It wasn't Russell Mulchay's money. It was Duran Duran's record label who paid for the video in which Duran Duran had to pay back. John Taylor talks about the video and cost concerns in a Billboard Magazine interview: "The video’s cost “caused a lot of concern, let’s put it mildly. However, at that point in the band’s career, it’s hard to - sometimes it’s hard to understand, even oneself, how … that kind of money could be spent on something as ephemeral as a music video. … It’s very difficult to put an immediate sort of value on [it]. At that point in our careers, we needed something lavish. We needed something experimental. We needed something extraordinary. And we got it.” It was a concern because it was the most expensive video made at the time and most especially a concern because it was EMI Records who fronted the cost that Duran Duran had to pay back from their record sales.

Fun Fact: this song and video was inspired by the film DUNE
@eamonconnelly80292 жыл бұрын
Incorrect fact mate. 🙂Duran Duran's The Wild Boys single and video was released in October 1984. Dune, the film, was released two months later in December 1984. The Video was inspired by William S. Burroughs' book The Wild Boys, which the director of the video, Russell Mulcahy, was going to make a film adaptation. It never happened. Mulcahy made Highlander instead released in 1986.
