What I’ll say about the Kim Catrell and Sarah Jessica Parker stuff is this; after the first season of Friends they all banded together to make sure that they all had not only equal pay but also equal say about what happened with the show. Sarah Jessica Parker always had that extra level of control by being a producer, and was always paid more. Now obviously the show is a little different, Carrie was more of the main character, but I agree with Kim when she says that SJP could have been nicer and allowed the other women more say in the show they were a part of. For example SJP was never fully nude, and most of her sex scenes (especially later in the seasons) were more fade to black then explicit like the other girls.

I think the only costuming they missed the mark on, just a little bit, was Carrie. Idk, I think they did a good job with her wardrobe. It felt like classic Carrie to me. SATC is one of my favorite shows, so I have to say I really hated this revival. Miranda had a whole storyline in the original, learning how to demonstrate her feelings, something she would try really hard to avoid, and doing so with Steve, the man she loved but didn't want to face, for them to destroy that, and turn her in this desperate person that is eager to left everything behind with a person that she just got to know? Besides the fact is all way too sudden with her sexuality, no exploring, no real questioning. Every plot line seems rushed and badly written. The new characters I also don't think are great, I understand they're trying to make the show more diverse, which is great, but SATC had only the main 4 and their partners as really developed characters, everyone else was there just for one episode, so having these characters with all theses stories and separate plots seems excessive. And don't get me started with Che, I'm non-binary and I feel almost offended by them, the character doesn't have a personality besides making unfunny jokes about not being neither a man or a woman, for a comedian none of their jokes are funny, and is just this walking stereotype of an afab with androynous look. Also, hate the lack of narration, the reflexions Carrie had were one of the cores of the show for me. Besides all this anger, I agree, the clothes are fine.

I'm only in half way of the video and haven't even watched the show yet. But I was listening a radio one day and there were people talking about this show. One of them made their master's thesis (that maybe what it is in English) about the sex and the city. They made an interesting notice that they don't talk about menopause or it's symptoms in the new show, even when all the three characters are in that age. In the 2nd movie Samantha was having hot flashes. I find this a quite big lost opportunity if it is true. The original show were talking many hush hush things about women's lives and bodies but forgot about it in the new show.

Lmao I don’t think you’ve watched that much SATC then. At the end of the tv show Samantha was experiencing hot flushes as well as she believed chemo kicked her into early menopause. There’s also a plot line earlier in the show where Samantha thinks she’s menopausal as the three other women get their periods at the same time but she doesn’t (she ends up getting her period later). In AJLT there’s a storyline when Charlotte gets a “flash period” and bleeds through her white clothes because she’s going through perimenopause and wasn’t expecting it as she hadn’t got her period in months.

It seems to be really bizarre to talk about how "we should have seen it coming" about Miranda becoming a lesbian or bisexual but her going back to school being the biggest stretch. Why should we have seen it coming? Because she had the "lesbian look" (which is pretty prejudiced and dumb - it's like saying that guy looks gay because his gestures are too feminine or women are allowed a certain degree of boy-ishness / manliness before being labeled a lesbian) or was it because she was independent, cynical and ambitious? We've had an entire episod that was smart and progressive ridiculing these sort of sexist and homophobic assumptions in the show when she has to pretend to be a lesbian and actually tries to fit into that box to the point where she tests kissing her date to see if she's actually attracted to women! It's fine if she changed or explored down the road and became bi, but at some point the writing is just bad because of her relationship with Steve and how, in the end, that's the thing that doesn't add up. Not the fact that a corporate lawyer wakes up in her 50s after making bank in one of the most fucked up profession / industry in one of the most cynical city in the world, and dealing with real life and the world in general, and decides to start a new chapter with another occupation. It actually happens way more than you'd think.

yes! my biggest issue with miranda's sexual awakening or whatever is the fact that SATC took great pains to show that she was NOT into women; she was absolutely straight, despite falling into the lesbian stereotypes of the time. that in itself was a message the show put out there. to go back on that now in AJLT just does that original storyline a complete injustice. also, would a successful lawyer in her 50s, a harvard grad, need an internship?! and what kind of a jerk do you have to be, as a 50 something highly successful and financially well off professional, to take an internship that could have gone to someone who actually needs it?

Very “hey there fellow kids” type of woke dialogue. Like they couldn’t hire someone younger and more nuanced to maybe help with some of those aspects and how to incorporate it into the show. Literally always thought Miranda would end up going the lesbian route but to execute it with this needy, clingy and emotionally unstable Miranda, it is so not… HER. I get it your life is shit, you’re unfulfilled but that doesn’t mean she has to lose all sense of self and become a different person. I’ve always liked how she’s self assured in her life choices and her very strict girl boss demeanor, it really grounded the group sometimes (outside of her clearly homophobic and problematic remarks) and kept a good dynamic going. This new Miranda makes me think why she should even be in the friend group because what does she have to offer in the dynamic that Carrie already doesn’t?

Why would you assume she'd go "the lesbian route" as you put it? It's funny because there actually was an entire episod dedicated to debunking and mocking this sort of assumption in S1 or s2 from her partners at the firm...
@nedvicky202 жыл бұрын
@@jumpingbee4717 Generally because that's what people would think watching a show about sexually progressive women before the 2000s. I came not knowing how problematic it was but at the same time trying so hard to have representation but only here and there. So at some point I expected Miranda to go the lesbian route because it seems like the writers were predictable enough to go there and I mean they just didn't decide to go there until more than a decade later. But I mean with your statement, it would mean that they tried to debunk her "strong female is lesbian" trope and then went back on it a decade later.
@nedvicky202 жыл бұрын
@@jumpingbee4717 So I mean it's good that they subverted the expectation back then that just because she had short hair and works in a male dominated field (at the time) that she must be a lesbian but to go back on it in the reboot is definitely shitty. But on the other hand, having Samantha be the only one in the group that really did anything progressive made it so that Miranda was just a homophobic, transphobic, internally misogynistic girlboss and that just didn't sit right with me at the time so yes I had really hoped that they wrote her into a lesbian back then.

That kind of career shift is not untypical, especially for headstrong people with the confidence to start something new, and especially in countries where the social system is good so you don't suffer a loss in quality-of-life for yourself and/or your family when trying for smth new.

Love what you said about how Carrie treats her wardrobe. It's what I love about her and the show. She understand her clothes has not only cultural but personal artifacts noting a specific moment in time. And she keeps pieces because she loves them, thats it. They don’t call Carrie out because of all the behind the scenes stuff with Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker. Everyone loved Kim and Sarah was jealous of that so when they got a new writer, they started treating Kim differently and wouldn’t listen to her anymore. So I think Sarah Jessica just plays this victim role in regards to all this stuff with Kim very well for the media and because of that, they are going to treat Carrie the character as someone of no fault or someone that doesn’t get stepped to in the show. Carrie has always been a selfish character and for me the reboot without Samantha just didn’t feel right. I personally hope that Kim Cattrall doesn’t come back because she deserves respect for her portrayal of Samantha Jones and she’s said she doesn’t like that she’s been characterized as Samantha in her acting career so I’m glad that the show she is on now seems to be going well for.

Charlotte’s odd and ill-fitting shiny pink dress for the they-mitzvah was noteworthy in its terribleness. I also thought it was kind of silly that they put her in a seemingly casual (or just non-athletic) white dress for the couples tennis scene. Like, really? They couldn’t find a real tennis skirt & top? They even had to go through shortening that dress (per the documentary) and I felt they didn’t make it short enough, leading to her looking old for her age in the scene after the tennis match, where she’s arguing with Harry about saying sorry as they walk through what looks more like a museum than a gym. It was like a catholic school girl outfit with that sweater & skirt. Once she put on the cardigan, hiding the form-fitting upper half of the dress, it just all made her look frumpy. Those scenes aside, I agree, I liked many of Charlotte’s looks, they were mostly flattering & well-suited to her. Loved the volume in her tops, and the cinched waists. That pink dress haunted me, though, it felt so unlike her to have chosen that, and for the finale, too. It wasn’t even a flattering shade for her! Totally agree about your analysis of the other main characters, would have loved to hear your thoughts on the supporting characters’ looks, too! Especially Lisa & Seema. As a long-time fan & re-watcher of SATC, I thought AJLT had good ideas but failed in its execution of them in many instances. It was trying to do too much with too little time, but one important reason why it felt disjointed in its flow was that a). They chose to fully cut out all scenes with Big after he passed due to the SA allegations, and b). They had to cut out and re-write all of Willie Garson’s scenes due to his passing. He (Stanford) was meant to be in many scenes with Carrie, sort of the sassy replacement of what Samantha would have brought. He will be missed. But it does explain the wonkiness of the storytelling, some of it, anyway. They didn’t do enough to flesh out the new supporting roles, making them feel too token-like. Thanks for your analysis! 🤍

I think with Miranda what I found jarring was that OG Miranda wore sweats a lot in her downtime. It would make sense for her if depressed to retreat into those comfy familiar garments. Going to college in teetery strappy sandals and a fussy full skirt and jacket look (via the subway) seemed crazy to me. She'd been a student before. Casual! Relaxed!

i loved samantha, but i feel that her being missing from ajlt has caused people to forget all the negative aspects of her character, there were many. she was open to queerness, yes, but only her own. i’ll never forget the episode where carrie finds out the guy she’s dating is bi, ALL of them joined in on the biphoboc rhetoric, she also had a really horrible storyline relating to trans women. i love samantha, but i feel that those who put her on a pedestal are missing the point, they were ALL supposed to be deeply flawed, that’s why the show was so good, it showed that female characters could be flawed, multi dimensional and still likeable

Actually Samantha and Carrie knew eachother since the 80s so double the time she knew the rest of the girls smth that we see on the Carrie diaries, we literally see them meet and become roommates (and yes it was made from the same creators as sex and the city so it is canon). I think it’s important to point that out because their friendship on the show felt the most deep rooted like they knew eachother so well. And it makes it even more sad how they brushes away a friendship that was so important and crucial in Carrie’s life.

It took a while to figure out why I didn’t like the “woke” (I’m starting to hate that word) stuff in the show and it’s because the way it’s approached, it talks down to the audience and it comes across very forced to the point where I’d prefer it not to address social issues because it’s executed poorly and it seems to be happening in not in and just like that but in a few shows and films. I definitely think these issues where ironically handled better in a lot of 90s shows, take for example the episode of fresh prince when carlton gets rejected from a black fraternity. I liked AJLT but I do acknowledge the flaws in it. On the every outfit podcast they said they should have broken up Steve and Miranda from the beginning instead of having Miranda cheat and I couldn’t agree more. Also I do feel that a lot of people are blinded by nostalgia so they’re not giving the reboot a fair chance and expect to be the same thing when it’s never gonna be the same series
