I can’t remember much about Salem’s Lot having read it a million years ago, but one day I plan to finish The Dark Tower series which I started way back when as well and it fell by the wayside, so may re-read Salem’s Lot as well then. I did get around to reading The Stand a couple of years ago which is also connected to The Dark Tower. I do enjoy these connections within King’s multiverse.

@dumpster_fiyah3 жыл бұрын
@@TH3F4LC0Nx Why?
@TH3F4LC0Nx3 жыл бұрын
@@dumpster_fiyah A few reasons. One, it's hella sexist. As some other people have pointed out, women serve little purpose in The Stand other than for breeding or other sexual matters. It's also kinda racist; the one black character is a stereotypical "Earth Mother" and talks like Tom's owner from the old Tom and Jerry cartoons. And really its lack of political correctness is ironic considering King likes to portray himself as a super progressive liberal now; go figure. Two, (and this is really just a more personal mindset), it's WAY too pornographic. King lavishes detail on dozens of unnecessarily graphic sex scenes that I assume were meant to titillate but ended up just being tedious, at least to me. (And no author should ever, EVER use the phrase "hot spunk" when describing sex. Like, ever.) Three, the book is overly simplistic in a moral sense and says virtually nothing important. The Stand could have been King's chance to really explore some important human issues and wax philosophical about the human condition...but he never does. The book is only concerned with action, not with introspection. The good characters have dreams of Mother Abigail and are therefore the protagonists, while the bad characters dream of Randall Flagg and are therefore the antagonists. Childishly simple, really. And four, (the biggest reason), the ending is the single biggest deus ex machina ever written. By any human being. Ever. That is inarguable. Even to 17 year old me, it was painfully obvious that King had no clue how to satisfactorily end that story. It was downright nonsensical. After 1,200 pages of buildup, the ending was just...nothing. And I just can't forgive King for that. I still greatly admire his imagination and I still read many of his books, but I no longer consider myself a "Constant Reader". So yeah. That's why The Stand broke my infatuation with Stephen King.

I just finished Salem's Lot a month ago, I'm going through King in order with the plan ATM to read _everything._ Sweet that you think he gets much better, because I was thoroughly engrossed with this prose: that chapter where you just go through a day in the town, riffling through everyone's dirty laundry - or simple purity - and the horror being how real the nasty stuff felt, how it could safely thrive like a semi benign tumor, mostly undisturbed until a being like Barlow makes it malignant. I _loved_ the writing as Matt approached his guest room door, or Mark's thoughts to himself after his friend came to his window, recalled terrors we've all brushed against, real or imagined, as little ones - and I don't know if it means anything but the crazy implications that Callahan recognized Barlow as the creature from his closet as a boy, really spark the imagination (I wonder if that will come back in "IT"). I loved Callahan to, by far the most complex character, but King's writing made simple people seem complex enough and I loved seeing them try to admit to each other something like this could be possible on and to stand together. Callahan though...oof, I am so glad to hear that his story continues, for good, for ill or for damnation I have no idea. I haven't read any Dark Tower yet, heard lots of opinions about it, I'm taking the leap of faith by putting in *all* the homework before hand, but if most of it's close to this good, it should be worth it - I'm only struggling a little bit to finish "Rage" right now.
