I think you nailed something with your comment about how when certain global shutter options became more affordable on the consumer market that we somehow have made that the benchmark for rolling shutter. People forget rolling shutter has been around a lot longer in film than global shutter and minimizing its affects are a part of what makes a good cinematographer/DP. Beyond that, most people don't realize you really only need global shutter or even an ultra low low latency camera/sensor when filming very high speed action. The generic "golf swing" or trusted "helicopter blade" wobbles are often fine in the real world with rolling shutter as are most short motion shots because the focus isn't typically on them long enough to matter. Global shutter systems really shine with continuous motion shots where there is a constant rolling shutter affect that would otherwise draw attention away from the focus of the shot. But thanks to KZbin, most people these days think they need a global shutter to perfect their whip pan transitions... hahaha

Very important observation from Kofi, Sony are an 'ecosystem' company with regards to cameras. Yes, you would expect the Burano to look superior to the FX6/3/30, but they have to have the same colour profile, so you can interchange and use the Sony line-up together, grade 'similar' and mix and match on multi-cam shoots. I personally an in said ecosystem, and it works.

By adding: - The ability to turn off noise reduction and sharpness - A less digital image quality (more organic) (I know it's a digital camera, but you know what I mean 😄) - Better battery life - Bigger screen with accurate colors - Better menu (take notes on Arri, Blackmagic or Red please) - 6k sensor - True dual Iso - More dynamic range (even if it's already good, I never say no for more 🙂) - Open Gate - (I'm pretty sure, Internal ND would be almost impossible to install in this tiny body, but let's keep dreaming)

I think Sony has been dropping the ball lately on the FX/Cinema line. The FX3 is arguably one of their best products. But looking at the Burano, we all really expected more, especially with that price point. The biggest issues I have with Sony are: 1. Weak UI in Menus 2. Missing features (False Colors, Shutter Angle, etc.) 3. Slow AF Firmware updates. Who announces a firmware update to fix baseline missing features 9 months before release. Yes we are fixing, but you HAVE TO WAIT 4. A bit of a miss on just Product management, their various lines don't seem to have a cohesive strategy and swim lanes. Like the Sony A1 who cares about it now? They seemingly restrict features to not compete with other cameras. Or they just wipe out other cameras with a cheap version that has more features, it is confusing. I think Burano has an amazing image, but it is an expensive FX9 or a very limited Venice. It could have been so much more. But rolling shutter, IR Pollution, Clunky view finder, Only LT raw, weird confusing resolution modes, pretty sub-par slow motion, no false colors, and limited output overlays--it just seems they skimped on the little things that really don't add up to the price point.
@KofiYeboah9 ай бұрын
@@chrisabruce We actually got to talk to the engineers of the FX line in August, the way the firmware code was written to give us the things we do like actually is the cause of delay The alpha line and cinema line people don’t talk to each other. Which is why there’s not software sharing , up until recently, they were almost two different entities, the FX3 was the first time they shared notes, and I think they did a good job By no means am I saying the Buranos perfect, if you want fast read out, and high res slow mo, the red raptors right there, imho, I don’t want Sony just to copy it and slap their logo on it, that said, the same issues with the raptor (I’ve camera operated on both, own a KX and used the Venice) has to be solved the same way unfortunately, with money an IrND, and a swivel for the viewfinder solves a few of those, just like an ND filter and an expander module is needed for the raptor to have things like more I/o The Komodo and Komodo x and I think the raptor have bad ir pollution too, that’s not an exclusive to Sony
@valentinavee9 ай бұрын
Honestly I've never cared about rolling shutter vs global shutter ... unless it's virtual production. But that type of budget means a global shutter camera rental is also in the budget.
@KofiYeboah9 ай бұрын
That’s kinda exactly what I was trying to get at, like if you KNOW you want a faster read out camera, there’s already one that exists, well 3, the Burano isn’t the Sony Raptor, or Sony Komodo which I guess because they’re the same price everyone compares the two, if you’re willing to have a $25,000 camera , IR cut filters comparatively cost around the price to give say a red Raptor XLR audio which it doesn’t have immediately, and requires a module you have to buy, i agree

Fast readout speed is mostly placebo tbh. I think below 16ms no one will notice for most use cases, which makes global shutter even less relevant, unless you're shooting a car chase or other really intense action sequences. And even in those cases I can't really tell the difference between the FX3 at 8ms and a global shutter camera. I've seen complaints about Infrared pollution with the electronic ND on the Burano which is a lot more concerning for such an expensive camera.

People should stop justifying bad rolling shutter with “I don’t do any crazy stuff with my camera”. Come on, you will always notice the distortion with handheld + walking.
