On the point of having fun when you're older- my mom is 50 and I've never seen her thrive more. She took a sabbatical, traveled the world, and even in lock down, she has the beach side home she's always wanted. Until this year, my 73 year old grandma was always bouncing around on cruises and traveling. Just because we get older doesn't mean the good times stop, somwtimes there's even better times to be had.

i feel like as a 17 year old who has grown up with social media, i feel the constant pressure have a "glow-up" and especially because ill be 18 next year, i feel like i need to transform myself in the next couple of months by losing weight, improving my mental health and getting smarter because 18 is an important year and its my last year of sixth form before uni (another milestone). I think what i'm slowly trying to tell myself is even though these 'goals' are a good, i shouldn't rush to do things but take my time because if i do everything in a massive rush i'll just mentally crash and become in a more worse position then where i began
@FrancisBehnen

Improving yourself is always good of course. I just couldn't be bothered and did the minimum to get into uni. Ended up regretting that at some point because it made some uni courses harder than they had to be, had I worked a bit harder the last year of high school. On the other hand, don't do it all at once indeed, or try to improve everything at very small increments.

You briefly touched on this when you were talking about memorizing camera settings-- I totally relate to that feeling. I have a tendency to seek to absorb as much preliminary information and theory about my niche of work (illustration) out of fear of making mistakes or "Doing It Wrong", instead of putting the work in and learning from the mistakes or happy accidents. I think preparing yourself is important, but I can get lost in it.

Such an interesting perspective on life at 30! I think one thing I would say is in regards to getting older and not having as much fun, I agree that usually this is not the case for many people. However, as someone living with cystic fibrosis (chronic lung condition) it's hard to have that same mentality because there is no cure and as we get older with cf, our health and our lungs start to deteriorate. Some people end up having lung transplants and even then it's not a cure! So it feels to me that there's a lot of pressure to take advantage of my health now and do as much as I can, before I start to decline. And that's really hard to deal with mentally, especially as someone living with social anxiety and dealing with chronic loneliness too... I don't have any real life friends to have experiences with and I'm 26. It's heartbreaking. Christ, that turned into a therapy session there!! 😂😂Doubt any one will read it anyway, but just thought I'd add another perspective to that particular thought and hopefully raise awareness for what some people with a chronic condition and a life expectancy might be going through! Anyway! Loved the video Evan, really appreciate your honesty and the things you've learnt. Oh and happy (belated!) birthday !!

I love the sentiment of this video. I gained a lot of self-acceptance in my thirties (I'm 33 on the 18th). I found myself caring less about my body hang-ups, and about what others think. I'm happy with what I've achieved to date, and I don't particularly care if people think I could have achieved it in less time or by going down a different path. Everything I've done has given me a experience that no one else could ever relate to. I won't ever stop learning, and I still have lots of things to figure out, but I've definitely become happier as I've got older - despite being terrified of the concept initially. Hope you had a great 30th birthday - welcome to the club!

I've also always feared getting older and the thought of turning 30 scared me, but for some reason at the beginning of the year, when parts of my life started falling in to place, the fact that I'm turning 30 in 2 weeks doesn't scare me anymore. I've finally come to terms with it and accepted it. All the things Evan said in the video was exactly how I felt as well. Here's to getting older and accepting yourself and to live life as you want to 🥂🍻

I’m 21 (22 in october) and i have the same feeling of excitement for growing old! I’ve went through a lot on the past couple years and used to be the person who’d desperately look back at the past and wanted to rush back asap. But I have grown sooo much over the past year, and now i’m finally in a place of content and actually happy with who i am which just drives me to look to the future. I can’t wait to see who i am in the next year, 5 years, 10 years! I feel so motivated and excited to see what is to come and what mistakes i will make and what new memories i will form. This video definitely ignited that passion and hope for growing up😊

I relate to this feeling! I turn 20 very soon and honestly it’s scary. I feel like I’m 15/16 at most, not nearly 20!?! Last year was a scare starting university but turning 20 seems more frightening. I won’t be able to call myself an “edgy teen” hahah!
@marshmallowkitty946
@marshmallowkitty946 4 жыл бұрын
That's pretty much how I felt when I turned 20! Now I'm 21 and it's not so weird or scary anymore. It's still a bit strange to think about sometimes, but I don't feel too separated from the teens or anything, it feels like this happy but vaguely weird middle ground between being a teen and being a "proper adult". It's a good age in its own way. It's kinda similar to turning 18 really; at that age it's weird because you're an adult now but also a teen at the same time, but you also don't really feel like an adult yet even though you are. It's like, turning 18: the sequel. The funniest thing for me is just that I don't really look any different than I did at 15, so I'm just this tiny baby-faced 21 year old haha. :'D

I just turned 20 and honestly I relate. Yesterday my parents were talking about me getting more road cycling experience (because where I live is near a lot of cycle paths through parks etc. but I want to start cycling to uni which involves way more road cycling than I have ever done) and my mum suggested my dad could cycle with me around the local streets to get more experience and confidence, and he just went "She's 20...." Like, yes I'm 20 but that has absolutely nothing to do with the amount of experience and/or wisdom I have in this particular field. 20 is barely a legal adult! I didn't spend my 20th birthday being granted the wisdom of the entire universe and also given a copy of the highway code. I spent it eating so many chocolate chip pancakes I felt sick afterwards, and then watching a lot of TV while playing a jigsaw app on my tablet.

The more I learn about GCSEs my empathy goes up for all y'all. Yes we have SATs and ACTs but 1: they are optional. If you're not going to Uni you don't have to take them. And 2: We have a choice between 2 tests. The ACTs test you in 3 subjects (English, Math, Science...I think) the SATs test you in 2 subjects (English & Math). I chose ACTs because I'm rubbish at math and didn't want it to be 50% of my assessment and for some reason I always test well in science.

I have a degree under my belt and last year I went on a big adventure where I moved to a different country for while, had a amazing job and lived independently away from home for the first time. But now that contract ended, I'm living at home with my parents again (who I love dearly and am very grateful for). Lately I've felt like I'm stuck in a rut, especially with thing going on right now. Ah it's like I /know/ these things, but it's always reassuring to hear other people say it too lol -- Society puts so much pressure on mile markers in life (some of which aren't even my personal aspirations) so I always feel like I'm grating up against things?? If that makes sense -- like I pushing back against "oh you should have xyz done by such and such age" and it's mentally and emotionally taxing sometimes. I'm 24 and even looking at other people my age or a year or two older who are so much closer career wise to what I want to be doing makes me feels a little bonkers and it's not quite as simple as getting a different job to feel "unstuck" but !! hopefully I'll get closer to what I want and need soon. I’m a 23 year old extrovert, and I’ve started to notice a desire for fewer stronger bonds vs many casual friends. So I’m glad to know that’s a natural progression of growing up because I often feel guilty about the people I only see once a year. The part of your video that hit me the hardest was when you talked about needing less validation. I’m not quite there yet, but I’m working on it. Hopefully by 30 I’ll have that one figured out!

Lewis Hopping do you get energy from being with people (extrovert)? Or are you like a battery that recharges when youre alone, and drains with people (introvert)? Like i LOVE people, but i really will hate everyone and everything around me after like 5 hours of hanging out, or if i socialize two days in a row. Doesnt matter who it is. Need to be left alone to be able to be human again. Nobody else can define this for you tho. You may be an outgoing introvert, or an ingoing extrovert... dont box yourself. Im an outgoing introvert - im an introvert, but when i am at a party or gathering, im so loud and im on the dance floor not caring who sees etc. Also, you could be an ambivert. But yeah you have to define it for yourself. ❣️
@really-quite-exhausted

@Lewis Hopping My whole life I thought I was an introvert, and then I started uni and spent 2 years confused, having "magically discovered" I was actually an extrovert who had been lying to themselves for 18 years. Turns out I was just really depressed and had been spending a lot of time with other people because then I wasn't alone with my thoughts all the time, but I hadn't paid attention to how draining it was for me. Now I'm doing a little better and am proud to say that I am actually an introvert, just like I had originally thought. (I think categorising people this way can lead to oversimplification but the framework is useful so I use it for myself)

I think the "go do fun stuff while you're young" comes from parents that kinda lost themselves when the kids entered their life. If you are very self-conscious etc. you can of course still do fun stuff every year, even as a parent, but early parents probably just forget about that for a few years.

i really felt the bit about preferring smaller groups of friends. i spent so much time as a teenager trying to have more friends & spend more time in large groups because peoples presence made me feel validated in that this many people actually wanted to be around me. but as i’m getting close to 20 (as well as reflecting on some pretty horrible experiences with large groups that pretended to like me & whatnot), i’m more at peace with my much smaller group of friends that genuinely trust each other & keep each other in check when we need it.

I remember at the end of year 10 last year i was so scared of starting my senior years, but i was also excited to start what i thought what going to be a very long journey. But... i have only a few weeks left of year 11 and then im in my last year of high school. And i pretty much only just turned 16. I didn’t realise exactly how much i would grow up this year, if that makes sense. And i didn’t realise how close i truely am to being an adult. But I have never been so beyond excited to start my adulthood. I want to travel. I want to meet new people and have friends from all over the world. I want to learn new languages. I want to go out to the city with my friends and just explore the world with everyone i love in my own way. I want to build a career, too. I really want to explore my passions as well and just ah! Im so excited to live life by my own choices without someone setting out a list of options for me to choose from.
