@amartje01084 жыл бұрын
@@joeyspijkers9867 Interesting.. I own several tarantula's and what I usually do is I crush the dubia's head so it can't harm the tarantula in case it's in the process of molting, but can still move around to trigger a feeding response.. and because I don't want it burrowing down into the substrate out of existence (or at least that's what it seems like because you can never find them back). What I've observed is they slowly move their legs and in the 'worst' case scenario they will run around a little bit but stop after a short amount of time. However in my experience the majority stays on their back and barely move after I crush it's head. Without their head especially they won't be able to eat, mate, reproduce or do anything else that would make you fear them. I've heard of cases where people had their dubia's nibble on them (however I've never had that happen to me and I handle them from time to time) but they obviously won't be able to nibble at you without their head. The reason they are able to keep moving and react to touch is because the nerve tissue still continues doing it's job, even without the head. So let me rephrase my original comment; There's no reason to be afraid or dislike cockroaches because of the simple fact they still move after they don't have their head anymore.
@danieltaylor41853 жыл бұрын
Those beetles in the cricket containers are most likely there on purpose. You see them when you order most insects online because they clean up the waste products. It's similar to the way you would keep isopods or springtails in a bioactive reptile enclosure. They most likely did not come from inside the crickets. Since those containers are on the shelf, that's probably why the beetles were there, instead of when you buy them out of the large tub. Since you're most likely going to take them out of the bag pretty shortly, there's no reason for the beetles. However, what is true about crickets, is that they are well-known for biting pets, especially if the pets aren't interested in eating them for whatever reason. But you are correct about a few things. They do smell bad as far as insects go, and they are fairly frail. Even if you provide hydration gel instead of water, give them plenty of food and keep them in a quiet, low-traffic area, some of them are still going to die off for seemingly no reason. I don't think I've ever had a dubia roach die on me after I set them up in their enclosure unless they got themselves wedged between the egg crate and the side of the tub.

Another downside of crickets is that they can be absolutely brutal. Back when I used to have a lizard (rest in peace, Mitch), we were warned that crickets are cannibals, and sometimes, they'll even kill and eat your lizard. Years later, when I had a huge entomology phase and was studying insects like nuts, I realized that it checked out. There are crickets out there (larger species, mind you) capable of killing a tarantula single-handedly. So yeah, roaches are probably a safer bet for your pets all around, both in terms of parasites and keeping them from getting murdered.
@marcellononame40174 жыл бұрын
2:30 those are dirmistead beetles (I don’t know how to spell it) they eat cricket poop and reduce bacterial content in cricket enclosures keep them around, you can also use them in roach enclosures. Also to keep your crickets alive longer, feed them fruit like watermelon, don’t feed them citrus fruits because that makes them poisonous. Edit: also get banded crickets, quieter, not nearly as smelly, and are super hardy. Also you can get 500 of them for like 25 -35 bucks

I started creating a Dubai roach colony myself since I had gotten a bearded dragon and they were the best food option for him! It definitely helped with the money saving that’s for sure! However for the past couple months my bearded dragon hasn’t been eating all that much… and in those few months, I’ve had to upgrade my roaches container not once, but twice. In order to get started much quicker I would recommend trying to buy roaches that are already of a breeding size to speed up the process since they can get pretty big before being able to breed.

The real worst thing about crickets (most of the things you listed are avoidable with proper care) is they can potentially hurt your pets. This is why it isn't advisable to just raise crickets in whatever tank your pet is in, they will pull an uno reverse card and try to eat your pet. There are horror stories of tarantulas having all their legs eaten off by crickets and even lizards losing the tips of their tails or toes to crickets and bear in mind these are same kind of cricket that you normally buy from the store not some sort of ferocious "dire cricket" or something. Make sure to maintain a proper feeding schedule so that your pet is definitely hungry and on the hunt when you put crickets in and remove any crickets that go uneaten after a set amount of time.

That's no joke about the crickets dying all the time. I had a colony of wild crickets that started from a few I'd caught in my mom's yard...completely unintentional to end up with so many but I guess they laid eggs or something. I loved them. They were fun to watch, didn't smell, didn't make much noise and ate anything I gave them. They lived for a few months and then eventually died off (not sure why, as I didn't change the routine) and next year when I wanted to try again I figured I'd just get a few store-bought crickets to start things off. I made their tank super nice with everything they could possibly ever want. And THEY ALL DIED IN LESS THAN A WEEK. x_x Good to know it wasn't something I did wrong and they just come in like that.

To feed them to lizards, and frogs, and stuff! I even found a video of some people eating them to see what they taste like! ( guess they wanted to know why their lizards like them so much...)

I have reptiles as pets and all of mine are insectivores! I’ve always found Dubias as my preferred alternative to crickets, especially after hearing so many “accidentally left too many crickets with my gecko, now I don’t have a gecko” horror stories. It took me a while to get over my nervousness with invertebrates, but I’d do anything for my little geckos

I have 12 spiders, 11 of which are tarantula's and they all eat insects. I breed dubia cockroaches as food source for my animals. Dubia roaches are actually kinda fun and cute, you just gotta get over the fear and give it a chance

I know one feeder insect worse than crickets: fruit flies. I’ve had numerous baby mantis and they’re all too small to eat anything else until like their 4th moult! (Pretty much all of my ones were flower mantises so aren’t even that big as adults) so I had to keep getting fruit flies, which suck! They’re tiny, they’re fast, they’re tiny and the can hide just about anywhere!!
@svenvcampen90223 жыл бұрын
Put them in the freezer for like 3 mins it will slow them so u can take them out, also u should get flightless fruitflies

I have two roach colonies as feeders and they’re pretty cool and easy to handle. I also just bought another one as a pet and I have one as a pet currently. I agree that crickets are stupid, they’re loud and they really do stink. And they only live for like a month and die within days
