Playing the meta means everyone can reasonably guess what tools you're packing, and can plan around it from the first couple cards. That, and the extended duel lengths, made this harder than I was also expecting. Thank you for the video, Mr Leg. Love your ladder climbs.

I agree with your opinion regarding how you should view the meta. When you’re avoiding the meta, it’s so easy to go ahead and attribute your losses to “Ugh, it’s only because I’m not playing a broken deck”, and brand those who do play said decks as skill-less scrubs. However, after putting down the decks and stepping away, you shouldn’t GENUINELY be looking down on meta players SOLELY for playing the meta. There will be those that genuinely enjoy the decks, so it’s wrong to talk down to them for playing what they like. The only time I’d justify it is against those people who will act superior about playing the best decks. When I see people use the “You only don’t like Tearlaments because you don’t play them”, and I can see SOME truth in it. I have my complaints about the fusion “cost” not REALLY being a cost, and how each card’s effect can proc from the field, but it can result in a lot of interaction. If there were more limitations regarding getting out the fusion monsters, and the cost actually FELT like a cost rather than refilling the deck and letting you mill again next turn, I’d likely play it myself.
@UrLeingod Жыл бұрын
My thing is that I don't like Tearlaments because making a deck the *only* correct answer to the question of "What should I play?" is the #1 way to make me resent it and refuse to play it. Any Tier 0 deck would get the same reaction from me, and I'm fully willing to admit that a.) Tearlament seems like a fun and not inherently unfair deck in a vacuum (very much unfair when it's the only deck that can do what it does, though), and b.) refusing to play it because it's the best deck isn't exactly rational. But it's never fun to just look at all the cool decks with unique mechanics or a really killer aesthetic, even brand-new ones that just came out, and realizing, "Tear just completely runs over this deck 60-90% of the time."
@RedWurm Жыл бұрын
@@UrLeingod Yeah, I'm also actively put off by meta decks too. One reason is I'm not a terribly competitive person, so just picking the deck that wins more feels like I'm putting myself under more pressure, as well as making it a miserable time for anyone else who doesn't want to play Best Deck. And also the cycle of 'Quick, buy and play the new hot deck until we admit it's brroken and nerf it!' repeated for eternity kind of sours me on the game.
@619ver1 Жыл бұрын
I agree about the meta part as well. Toxicity is bad in both directions though i genuinely dislike Tear, a deck that is literary DESIGNED to be BETTER then anything else that exists in the game bar cards that specifically counter it. I am not putting that on the players, it generated interesting games if you are playing in a high elo but it invalidates 99,75% of all other cards in existence.

I will say for myself, I updated my tear deck with all the new toys yesterday and proceeded to streak into plat with a 2:1 win/loss ratio, so I feel like it's basically objectively true meta decks can just get to higher ranks by merit of being better than other options. Also super poly into Garura is just ridiculously effective at ending turns.

Just for fun, my non-toxic feelings about playing the meta - from what I've gathered, and this is as an OLD school, been playing this game since it's original release in the 90's and still actually have all of my gen one irl cards (and dueling field) player, the way the game has evolved has created two distinct types of players. There are those who play ygo because they want to win, and those who play ygo because they love to duel. Now there is some crossover, by which I mean players like Duel Logs, who plays a ton of meta cards and decks but gets his joy not from winning with his decks but from seeing how his cards interact with themselves and his opponent's. He's the kind of player who will happily play a Tear deck with something like hungry burger and some Prinzessin's in it, just to see if he can make it work. I respect that mindset a lot. But... the dark side of the meta IS the pay to win mindset. It's nothing to do with enjoying building decks, or playing cards because they are fun to play together, or enjoying the thrill of combat, your-deck-against-mine-heart-of-the-cards, it's about getting that W. It's about being unbeatable, at any cost. To be fair, I have paid for more that a few gems here and there to buy packs, but never for that sort of deck. I like decks that have a good flow to them, are fun to play, and are strong but not unbeatable. At the moment for example, in public duels I've been playing Tindangles, Noble Knights, Ancient Warriors, Vampires, a really basic burn deck and an archetype pure Ghoti deck. Hell I know I will never get any of them out of Gold even, but they are all tough, all a blast to play with, and I always have a good time playing with them. Against friends I even play sillier stuff like Prinzessin, I've got a Flower Cardian deck with Montage Dragon in it, and hell I even have a Watt deck. (Now there's a deck I would love to see your patreons ask for you to take into diamond lol!) Yeah, I know I will lose to a meta deck every time but knowing that my opponent paid $400-$500 bucks to build a deck that ALMOST lost to my N/R fish makes me happy enough to take the L with a smile. I don't dislike the decks, I don't dislike the players, I do dislike the people who aren't there to play but to win and I do dislike that being a thing that they could buy.
@MattAnd Жыл бұрын
This is exactly it! Given this example, I actually kinda like playing against Tear (with a decent counter option), and love putting up a good duel against meta decks. What I dislike is when the duels turn into “I’ve spent 5 minutes building a board that’s unbreakable” - because I’ll get bored, or when I’m bottom of gold rank and playing my stupid jank deck, but still seeing dozens of Tear or other overwhelming decks for that rank I’ve always said that tier 2/3 decks and below are always really fun to play, with and against, because the decks are all usually quite close in power level

Shotgunning the shifter is so stupid. Wait for them to try to fusion in the graveyard that way you effectively cancel it whereas if you immediately D. This was a fun video, and it’s cool how you switched up the deck a lot trying to find a version that worked for you instead of just using the “tournament tier 0” version. I have been loving Tear since they came to master duel as it’s been the most fun and interactive deck I’ve played since starting. However I recognize that the deck is just very strong so you see most decks need to either hard counter it, or be Tear to compete. The Tear mirror is the most intensive games of yugioh I’ve had and I just wish other decks could compete at Tear’s level without hard countering it with shifter and the like. I hope they keep the deck alive while nerfing it enough to let other decks compete easier. I personally just want the Ishizu cards gone as they are the biggest problem with the deck and why it’s so strong. I’m glad master duel is hitting them first before banning kitkalos to test if that helps enough.

gri know most people dont like watching it and there's a general disdain for a tier 0 deck that nothing competes with but in a vacuum its skillful, high level and interactive in a very healthy way (minus the shufflers of course and now bystials to an extent). i wish MD would've given us a proper chance to play tearlaments without ishizu and bystials since i believe that is easily the most fun version of the deck for both players. ALSO i loved when you said you were starting to hate agido and kelbek, i dont think i've resolved either of those cards outside of maybe the first week that tear dropped because no one knew what they were doing and i dropped them as soon as people starting figuring out the mirror. you also played pretty well from the jump and of course there was plenty of mistakes but from what i saw you grew as a duelist and were able to add your own flair to the deck as well which we can always appreciate from a creative standpoint. tl;dr great video joe of the hardleg. de-craft kelbek and agido, theyre holding reinoheart back from greatness

The reason there’s no anime running about the current card releases is because when the Tearlament player entered to duelist kingdom they overwhelmed the main characters plot armor in episode 4 banishing him to the shadow realm, then all the supporting characters and villains simply killed themselves one by one shooting themselves in the head and jumping off buildings when they got paired to duel with the Tear player, So it was censored in America.

There is a valid question of whether the best deck is the fastest deck to climb ladder with, even in a tier zero format. Might you have climbed higher if you played a slightly worse deck but that has quicker games?
