I live and work in Hollywood. Nothing gets under my skin as quickly as meeting writers who *think* they are smarter or more talented than the authors of the work they are trying to adapt. Their arrogance is unbelievable, and with only a few exceptions, completely unwarranted. Netflix Gren is borderline offensive to me. It's an extreme sanitization of a very compelling, tragic character with a very messy problem. He's forced to live in a body he doesn't feel comfortable with and doesn't even know if he can consider himself a man anymore because of it. It's a situation that, while the causes might be different, is very *real*. Feeling like you don't belong in your own body is something that resonates with a lot of people. It's sad, it's tragic, it's so wonderfully well done. And Netflix threw it in the fucking trash. It reeks of "corporate writers who want to say they have LGBT rep without taking too many risks". To quote RedLetterMedia, it's Passive Progressive.
@Crimzs3 жыл бұрын
I have thought about a lot of the changes made in the Netflix version, and it is riddled with politically motivated alterations. All of a sudden it's not bad luck that is screwing over characters, it's corporations/government. Faye sexual orientation and backstory are changed for no reason? Gren's original backstory is problematic and must be changed. Vicious turns from cold murderer to raging insecure teenager who just happens to have a shitty overbearing father (HMM wonder why they keep saying he isn't a man throughout the entire show). Julia goes from a mysterious idealized character to an abused woman who overcomes her abuser. Jet who was seemingly a good mechanic and fixes the ships multiple times, now just hires Mel to introduce another competent woman in the show and romantic interest for Faye. Of course, Annie needs to become more of a main character now and is a Mother figure for characters in the show. Where did laughing bull go, maybe they could have just consulted some Native Americans instead of deleting the character? Obviously, it's ok to write these themes into a show. But, why are you trying to shove these themes into a show that didn't have these ideas in mind? All it does is detract from the original ideas and core stories in the show. Why name it cowboy bebop if you wanted to write your own story? Of course, it became a big deal because they slapped the Cowboy Bebop name on the show and I think that's why many people are upset. I don't think all the changes are bad from a storytelling perspective, but it's not Cowboy Bebop.

Calling him immortal and not understanding why bullets don't work against him? The way he moves and floats effortlessly suggests telekinetic abilities, so not a big stretch to deflecting bullets. And it plays into the climax with Spike. Since it's a mental ability, it turned off when Le Fou had that flashback and broke his concentration. Spike easily saw Le Fou's expression change and he reacted with throwing the knife, WHICH WAS THE LAST WEAPON HE HAD. Spike didn't just "figure it out," it was literally his last ditch attack. Yes, he was lucky, but he also had the skills and reflexes to exploit that split second window of Le Fou's weakness. And why is he after Spike? Does he need a reason? All the experimentation and tests have scarred him mentally and emotionally. Add to that his maturity being reduced to that of a child, and killing another person becomes more like pulling wings off flies, pulling legs off spiders, and burning ants with a magnifying lens. I kind of have a problem with Faye sleeping with the mechanic. Not because it's 2 women (though that does seem weird if you were trying to keep her original character, but changes are not automatically bad), but because in the anime, although Faye was always outwardly sexy/teasing, she only ever used it for her immediate advantage and never actually gave any indication of wanting to have sex with someone. This makes a lot of sense given her backstory, she was hurt badly by someone she was greatly attracted to, and basically refuses to let anyone else get that close to her again (until character growth). The sexy but no sex thing was actually part of her character, and why I wish the netflix outfit was better. Not the same as the anime neccessarily, live action having different requirements, but what characters wear reflects their choices, and there was actually a lot of subtlety that the character outfits brought in the original. Note that a completely different character from the anime does not make it bad writing, that it does all on it's own.

The only ones she ever really started opening up to and accepting were the bebop crew, which made the ending and spikes leaving so much more tragic. This new show will never be able to capture that.

I could buy that Faye in the show was bi, I mean she grew up in a time where that likely wasn't a social issue anymore, but you're right on the money. My real issue with it was they made this big deal about changing the outfit because it was too revealing and then not only give Faye a sex scene but make her stick her hand in a literal jizz pocket for a laugh. They degraded Faye even worse than the outfit they were so upset about for a laugh.
@themanwithsauce3 жыл бұрын
I can't believe they decided to "remake" the show.....They're BOUNTY HUNTERS. Have a show setup which starts with the cast in a bar, scuffed up from a bounty. They're nursing some wounds with a strong drink, and a dirty bar to hide in while the dust settles. They banter real quick about how close it was, but how they're still broke. While they're waiting, they pass the time telling stories about past bounties and incidents. And then you NEVER EVER repeat all the scenes from the anime. Come out with some new stories or maybe some scenes form the past we never knew before. You can even call this series something like "coins in a jukebox" or something like that to show it's an anthology and will wander a bit. You can test the waters with original works, and then maybe end it with the last episode or two being a remake of scenes from the anime to test the waters. There - it stands on its own from the writing front and avoids having to measure up to episodes in the anime directly unless you want it to. Then you see - if everyone loved the new stories but hated remaking the old ones then you just do that - write some new bounties and have a blast. Introduce some new characters. Maybe the crew get stranded on an asteroid for a few weeks and are trying to help someone down on their luck while they themselves hustle and scrap to get something to eat. But no, instead they did the weirdest remake where they "remade" the anime....by changing a lot of things to the point where you have to ask - why use the originals as the base? Why try to hit the same beats? I saw the first episode with friends and I got mad that in the opening episode, Asimov wasn't killed by Katerina and instead, Katerina was a rich girl who just "went with the bad boy" instead of being a slightly tragic story of a broke couple doing whatever they could to get up in the world. Hey....Katerina was done pretty dirty by the remake too. Going from a hustler in her own right, doing these deals to get to Mars because she wants off a dirty asteroid colony, to being written as just a dumb rich girl who gets taken advantage of by a big meany bad boy who is bad and its not her fault and she would've been better without him so hey girls watching Cowboy Bebop On Netflix (TM) - don't forget - nice boys are best! :D .....I am now convinced someone on the writing staff pined over a girl he never talked to and watched her get with a jock or something and he rewrote the first episode of Bebop into revenge fiction.

Honestly I feel pretty bad for the actors, it’s not their fault for what the show is, as they did their best with what they were given. Again I wouldn’t want the adaptation to be frame by frame since we have the anime for that. Slight changes are fine as long as it remains true to the story and characters. The only real and good adaptations out there is Scott Pilgrim vs the World. It’s close to a video game adaptation that we got and closest to adaptation when it comes to source material. I feel like anime is the hardest genre to really adapt into real life just due to how the expressions of animated characters can be exaggerated for scenes. Look at the American Live Action Death Note. They tried mimick the style of when there’s tension in scenes however it became more corny. In the last 5 minutes of the movie we get a small glimpse of the anime character Light but it’s barely passable just due to how bad the movie was. The only thing that was good in that whole Movie was Willam Dafoe as Ryuk.

Actually in the Pierro Le Fouxh episode, it is...loosely explained (through visuals) that the psychopath can block bullets (and any other projectiles) using some sort of psychic shielding. However, the traumatic memories he had of the experiments done on him are linked to visual memories of a cat that was always present in the lab where he was kept (the cat presumably belonged to one of the lab/military/corporate contactor leaders that was watching/supervising/observing him). It’s shown through visuals that this is also why Le Fouxh has a fear of cats (he literally goes crazy and loses focus when he sees or hears them). In the final showdown between him and Spike, a glint of light reflected off of Spike’s fake eye reminds Le Fouxh of the cat, whose eyes also had a particular glint. This causes him to become afraid for a second and lose focus, just as Spike throws the knife at him. He didn’t end up activating his psychic shield because of that loss of focus, and got the knife in the leg as a result.

Anime and live action are completely different formats and they don't intertwine. In anime the voice acting is highly emoted and the facial expressions/body motions are exaggerated to fit the anime template. Mimicking these traits in live action like they did in Cowboy Bebop just comes off as cringey. I would say Ed is the prime example of this. The performance is pretty faithful to the anime but because it's live action, the actor no matter how talented can't achieve the same effect as animation which results in a super cringey and borderline uncomfortable performance.

A lot of anime shows cannot be transferred into live action without completely losing the essence of the original work, because so much in those shows are directly tied to animation and directorial choices which can be pulled off only in animation medium. Imagine something like Bakemonogatari (yes, I realize that the anime itself is a light novel adaptation) adapted into a TV series with real actors and real cinematography work. It either would be the ultimate cringefest or something that is very loosely based on the anime. But Bebob is one of those which is relatively simple to adapt into live action format, because, actually, of how much it borrows from Western cinematic tropes. Yet they've fucked it up somehow. Smh.

We gotta make her a clean freak!". ffs

I think his take on Ed is pretty good. That would be an interesting take and Ed being a ghost in the machine is pretty close to a lot of the anime interactions. I thought they could do Ed if they toned the cartoonish aspects down but kept the quirky, weird ones. Also, don't cast an inexperienced actress to be Ed. Margo Robbie pulls off Harley Quinn and maintains the cartoonish character successfully but not every actress can do that, most can't. River Tam from Firefly was a character in a similar vein as Ed and, personally, i think Summer Glau nailed that portrayal. River isn't zany like Ed but she lives in a reality just outside our own but she wants to be included and she's a badass. To me that's Ed, sub hacking for fighting. Even in the anime the zany, wacky Ed is mostly an affectation and they show her serious or normal a lot, especially in her introductory episode and her interactions with MPU and later in some interactions with Faye.

Mustafa and Cho did way better with the roles than I was expecting, and their chemistry with each other really helped sell it. Faye....ehhhhh that was clunky. Up until the twist My husband and I (who both have watched bebop many times since it first aired on cartoon network) thought it was a decent, if unnecessary adaptation. Also we both agreed doubling down on Jets family was super boring.

Here's where I sit on live-action adaptations of anime: That is a medium that is, by its nature, extremely difficult to adapt. Anime often has a lot of concepts within the very premises of the properties, series, films, etc. that make animation the better means of bringing it to life. To give an example, let's talk about Dragon Ball and that...horrible thing that was made several years back. I know people who were genuinely excited and hopeful when Dragon Ball Evolution was announced. My reaction was more along the lines of "I don't know that they're going to be able to capture the fights and action as well as they need to." A property like Dragon Ball is so fantastic that the limitations of live-action are detrimental to the story-telling. I think Cowboy Bebop is another one of those properties. The story of Cowboy Bebop is not as fantastic as Dragon Ball, but there are fantasy elements there that make adaptation difficult. Aside from that, the medium of animation allows for some pretty unique character designs that are present in Cowboy Bebop. Now, with all of that said, I do think there are some anime that could be adapted very well into live-action! Black Lagoon comes to mind, as that anime was pretty heavily inspired by John Woo films! I don't think I'd lose any sleep if a series like that were adapted, but the more fantastic anime with more fantastic ideas, concepts, etc. should really probably be left alone.

Yes, that thing about Antman is so true! That was all I could think about while watching Jet interact with his family. I think you can tell that the LA tried to do something good, but really made the weirdest choices and with that, killed off a lot of what was essential to Cowboy Bebop.

I actually wasn't part of the Cowboy Bebop wave, but from what small clips I saw of it and from what others said, I understood why it was considered a masterpiece. As someone almost completely unknown to it, I decided to check out the Netflix live action adaptation with an open mind. I couldn't get past the first scene, though, because it felt like they were trying TOO HARD to be anime-in-real-life. I just turned it off. So thanks Ark!! I'll watch this video now and witness you unravel instead. :)

The thing with Cowboy bebop is its the definition of a cult classic. It was made in an atypical way compared to most anime, it was made in a different style to most anime and it was made with far more western (american) influence that most anime. It wasn't at all a hit in Japan, it would probably have disappeared forever if it hadn't been localized for the English speaking markets, where I believe the heavily western production allowed it to succeed in a way it couldn't in its home market. It had the Japanese aura that appealed to the Manga and anime consumers while being culturally familiar enough to be appealing to non weebs.

As to your Ed proposal: Anne McCaffrey wrote about Ship-People. Ppl who are placed in life support modules at birth because they would die otherwise. They become the brains of incredibly complicated machines, like spaceships, because the human brain is better than any computer. So the concept has been developed already. They could have copied that story too!

My first instinct "nerd-rage" comes from making direct comparisons to source material, but I think it's very sophisticated to go beyond and analyze from those other POVs. Of course, there's also that sweet, yet infuriating shaudenfreude when they fail from those angles as well. 😅 Great critique. I feel vindicated knowing I'm not alone.

Honest to god, HONEST TO GOD as someone who always really enjoys adaptations and who isn't of the "100% the original was better all the time" mindset, I think the ONLY way to do a good adaptation is to know what kind of story you want to tell with the world/characters/whatever AND to make sure that story either a) fits the source material well thematically or b) fully acknowledges that it is not doing the original. I'm a HUGE fan of the film adaptation of the book beautiful creatures and I am honestly very supportive of the changes they made with that story because those changes keep the themes of the book while working better as a movie. It took the story told in the book and said "what makes people like this and how to we make that work on camera" and all of the choices were deliberate with that question in mind. And on the other hand, I have MASSIVE respect for how jj Abrams handled star trek (2009) because he KNEW that because he's not a star trek fan, or wasn't at the time anyway, that he couldn't make a prime timeline story that felt like prime timeline star trek. So he, imo, very respectfully set the prime timeline aside and went off to make his version of star trek. And he knew what story he wanted to tell with his version of star trek. So, again, when changed things it was to fit the story that he wanted to tell, not just to "make things feel fresh". The thing I thing a Lot of companies forget when they try to adapt something with an audience built-in is if you don't respect that the fans are there because they know and love the source material, you are going to have a lot of, imo, righteously angry fans

@@TheCaptainhowdy11 my point wasn't really about his movies themselves and more about how he respected the star trek fans enough to know that if he tried to make a main canon star trek movie, it wouldn't work. I have my issues with the movies myself, but I would be even more pissed if he had tried to insist that that was the original crew of enterprise. He respected the prime timeline enough to leave it alone and I have massive respect for that decision. That was the point I was trying to make. No shade, I just wanted to clarify what I meant

@@makadragontamer I mean honestly, yeah this kind of makes me think alot more people would at least be able to accept reboots under alot of these types of circumstances as well. Considering alot of reboots also have the honest to god awful idea of resetting the entire old timeline to make place for the new one. As opposed to just leaving it be, and making their own thing entirely seperate.

A few decades back it was figured out that to succeed in capitalism you don't need to have the best product you just need to have the best marketing strategies. Controversy is a really good marketing strategy especially today where markets are governed (sincerely or not) by algorithms. All you have to do is say something is trending, but it really helps if your product pisses off a lot of people because then it'll really trend! Companies (in this case, Ntflx) serve shareholders not consumers and not employees and certainly not the public in general. On top of whatever revenue this shit pile can bring in it offers the added benefit of pushing dumbass ideas onto the public and guarding them from dangerous ones.

To be fair to RWBY I'd argue it was never the same after Monty died. Yeah they started off with seriously low production values but then the production values got better and the writing got questionably worse. Bad trade if you ask me but such is life. I do tip my hat to Rooster Teeth for trying to keep it alive but you have to wonder how close it is to the original vision.

Probably what Netflix did to Gren is the single most insulting thing not only to the character but also to the non-binaries and gay people in general: in the anime he has a clear motive and a struggle because he has a clear identity but finds himself sort of at odds with it because his body doesn't match it anymore and eventually even though he's still at odds with it, gets comfortable enough to adapt to this new situation for his own benefit, there are parallels that could be drawn here towards non-binaries, genderfluid and trans people BUT INSTEAD Netflix is like "nah, we're gonna make him the sassy non-binary host of a nightclub"...like FFS the bar was low but the writers came with a shovel.

My biggest problem with the whole story was when they threw The Faye video tape scene in there. It felt rushed and not earned. No foreshadowing, not enough callbacks to it, and not enough scenes to show how much pain not knowing who she is causes her. And I say that not even compared to the original, but compared to any story in general. If I was watching this and had never seen the anime, I would still have no emotional investment into the scene. Anyways, such an emotional moment in the anime, that fell so flat in this show.

If you want to see the essence of the director of Cowboy Bebop, Mr. Watanabe, you can watch episode 14 of Samurai Champloo. Music plays while things happen. Unfortunately André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner, did not understand the essential proposal. It's a shame, because the cast is very good.
