halfway through the video I'm pretty confident that they're basically saying they're planning on diverting resources away from free cosmetics (the boards released per year) so that they can instead release more cosmetics that you have to buy, like hero skins, pets, and they may even force people to buy their 'preferred boards', rather than letting you just set any board you want for free.

Blizzard business practices are so unbelievably bad this days that I legitimately feel bad contributing to their game. And that's kinda sad, is a fun and generally nicely made game, but damn this developer letter looks grim... Since players keep dropping you gotta assure you get the money from the few that still play consistently, makes content like Rarran, and/or buys every cosmetic in the game just to have everything. But ultimately a game is made out of their casual community, and that keeps shrinking every year, so this is just a patch for what's gonna happen probably sooner rather than later, and one that will filter out f2p players in exchange for some money they'll get from the other people that doesn't care about paying, which is a considerably smaller amount of players.

I don't know if I would say Hearthstone is dying but it definitely feels like we are in the twilight years of the game. While I don't think this will be the last year we get new cards, I do think it may be one of the last years at least with the regular 3 expansion year cycle, I could definitely see in the nearish future hearthstone team basically turning into a skeleton crew, which mostly do balance updates and releases a few cards every couple of months or around once a year. Until that eventually stops. No matter what happens I think your decision of trying to branch out beyond Hearthstone is the right one.

WoW's coming off of a fantastically received expansion and heading into a connected set of three more, and while I can't tell you firsthand what Overwatch is up to, it's far from a dead game, still a titan of the hero shooter genre. They didnt give the PvE content, They went back to 6v6 instead of 5v5, they removed loot boxes (which were the only good lootboxes of gaming). I'm done with the game. I've been playing off and on since the beta (stopped during Whizbang's Workshop), but the last few expansions I've played just haven't been very enjoyable. It's also so expensive if you enjoy playing a variety of decks; I was really just riding the sunk cost fallacy towards the end. Add that to Blizzard spitting in my face every time I come back with even more expensive cosmetics, preorder epics, far more time consuming quests... I should have quit a long time ago.

I don't think the game is on it's deathbed by any means. What I *DO* think is that the new monetization philosophy falls in line with most cheap mobile games. They will absolutely make more money selling boards and pets than they would selling packs right now. That said, cutting out the parts of the game that drive excitement and attachment to new sets and characters will lead to players losing interest in playing the game in the first place very quickly. I worry that they're selling out the long-term viability of the game for short-sighted returns.

It is absolutely not difficult to make a board. The hardest part IMO, is the animations. Models, textures, sound effects, the minimal programming required for "click this for cool effect", not difficult. At least, in my understanding of my time using unity, audio creation and using blender.

I still play Duos regularly and the board states and combos that arise in it can be exponentially more complex and weirder than regular BGs which keep me playing the mode even if some people dont understand the coop aspect and there are some balance issues. Seems like we're not far from getting sponsored advertisements in-game on the board. I still play BGs casually, but I am done giving them money after the combination of their capitulation to the Chinese government regarding Taiwanese independence (and they still got screwed by China- probably because of the next item where they celebrate depravity in all its forms)- their obsessive capitulation to the alphabet crowd for cash and prizes, followed by their complete betrayal of the alphabet crowd by partnering with Saudi Arabia for cash and prizes. Actually, I got one idea from a Chinese player's view which might be just bullshit. You know hearthstone is getting back to China mainland in this September. They have negotiated for a long time and reached an agreement early this year. By helping the hearthstone back to China(escaping from the insane Chinese government censorship), they have to redraw many of the cards like sexy girls, bloody scene, all the zombies and so on from the expansion of March of the Lich King to Perils of paradise. So I doubt this requires tons of work with assistance of drawers of hearthstone, which makes them not available to designing a board.

I love playing Hearthstone. Really do. But the game is just too expensive to be a player or too time consuming to get the bare minimum to have fun. Other than that the fact that some streamers treat the game like a 3 people independent dev that don't have the resources to do better to the game, and make a better game, is saddening. Hearthstone needs interactivity. I loved watching seeing the interaction of players during the world tournament. I love seeing Rarren and Day9 insult each other, or play mind games with Ecore. Even Disguised Toast would bring interactivity to his solo play. Hearthstone could do a simple - text or audio chat like other online games. Or bring back the "I'm sorry" emote. You always have the opportunity to "squelch" your opponent if you want. This would also make losing feel not as bad if you're opponent KNOWS they drew their perfect combo while you got stuck with shitters.

Last time I played Hearthstone on my computer I noticed that there was a lot of empty space on either side of the game- outside of the hearthstone box as it were, and I’m wondering if that’s where the pets would go? But that space doesn’t exist on mobile where I also play. Also, before now, each board was shared, whenever you got into a game both you and your opponent would have the same board, so either the complicated part is making a system to pick one that both players like at the same time, or Transfer student as a card is getting a full rework to disconnect the board from each person I was trying to be hopeful about this message but this really doesn’t give much to be hopeful for does it..

They're avoiding Technical Debt. They're planning on adding an in game 'pet', which means each board needs to be created to account for an in-game pet. But because they don't have the feature released yet, it means each board they have to do twice. It would be better for them just to be transparent, but they're just a small indie studio.

Hearthstone lost the plot a long time ago. Whenever I open it up for the occasional Arena run, it is so blatant why I quit.

I really don’t get the rage over no new board. I don’t even notice the boards anymore. They were kind of interesting for the first couple years with secret interactions but I don’t log in to click the random items on board.

so i got into hearthstone with the naxx solo adventure. i've always been a huge wow fan, and at the time i hadn't seen anything like a solo adventure from a card game, and i thought the adaptations of wow boss mechanics combined with the comedic take on kel'thuzad was really charming and it really got me hooked on the game. and when i think back to the times i was really interested in hearthstone, it doesn't correlate at all with "oh standard was really balanced at the time", i was always most invested when hearthstone did interesting things. so, to me, their promise to narrow their focus to standard, arena, and BGs is them shutting down any hope i had that the game might be interesting again. custom game formats could definitely bring me back. i'm curious what they're working on that's supposed to be so exciting, and i think it's either got to be some kind of custom content/custom gamemode system, or it's some other worse idea that won't save hearthstone. i really think that custom content is the best path HS has if it wants to survive another decade.

The saddest part is that the ground floor devs are going to get as much blame from people as the people making these decisions. The entire update/discussion boils down to them saying the game will have *even* more paid cosmetics. Even scrapping content that should have been in the game for free so they can sell it to us later down the line.

I was interested in getting back into Hearthstone. Thanks to all the comments, reminding me what kind of stuff Blizzard is doing, so I came back to my senses and discarded the idea and urge all together.

3:50 duo is fun with friends and newer players trying to learn the game and chill for a bit :) I play it like 1 time a week give or take 1-2

I loved duels because the element of randomness made it relatively volatile and varied. Sure you ran into a lot of the same decks, but the buckets system and one-of deck building made it a genuinely different format where I could still use my cards Now? Now I play battlegrounds until I can afford to play arena. I just can’t bring myself to WANT to play standard.

Blizzard could essentially outsource game mode development by allowing people to tinker with the rules (~package existing internal tools) and look at stats what works.

I came back to hearthstone after 5 years in December for duels, cancelation announcement, and I’ve left hearthstone again

I feel like if they made competitive mode and had weekly/monthly tournaments with an entry fee, they would have been in a better shape
