When the film was still in development, Douglas Adams wrote a letter to the studio execs saying he’d really like to be involved but had been having trouble reaching them. He ended the letter with, “Anyway, I’ve included a few phone numbers by which you can reach me. If still can’t reach me, I shall know that you are trying very hard not to.” followed by two pages’ worth of phone numbers that included places like “Restaurants I Might Conceivably Be At” and “Supermarkets I’ve Been Known To Shop At”. 😂

Adams co-wrote the screenplay with Karey Kirkpatrick but died in 2001, before production began. Kirkpatrick used what notes Adams had left, finding that Adams was willing to go off the book's narrative to adapt to the film. He considered his screenplay something in the spirit that Adams had set out based on the whole of Adams' work. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was released in 2005.

By my count, there's the original radio play, the television miniseries, the books, the text adventure video game, and this movie. No two are alike. They pretty much always start with Arthur waking up, sitting in front of the bulldozer, going to the pub and being beamed up by vogons with Ford, then being ejected into space to only be very improbably picked up by the Heart of Gold with Zaphod and Trillian. Paths diverge from there, sometimes going on the same adventures in different orders, or throwing in unique ones. And yet somehow no version is definitive or "canon." Because somehow it doesn't matter. It's really just a vehicle for Addams to opine and satirize over. @@VladMarkov

OstracizedEmu The book is amazing. Not just the comedy, but it builds a world around the characters so amazingly. Making it feel like things could go on without those characters, but at the same time making it feel like the characters are the key-element to the story. The movie was disappointing to be honest and I can't say it's just the fact that world building in movies is hard, but the fact they got rid of key comedic moments that built upon the first book's greatness. The casting was--I would say for the most part--good, thought I'm still iffy on Zaphod's performance and special FX. The things they changed weren't terrible, but they weren't good either. And watching it with someone who never read any of the books, I figured it wasn't just me who didn't particularly get a good laugh. Maybe a small chuckle here and there, but nothing boisterous like I commonly would at the book. Now, I must go. So long, and thanks for all the fish.
@poweroffriendship2.06 жыл бұрын
person o' stuff Because the movie was decent does'nt mean it's bad. This movie is underrated than other movies that we know today such as IT and other book-to-movie adaptations, which they're overrated at least. You might now that there is a software company called "Novell". Our school used its German mail service, called "groupwise". A few days ago, groupwise got replaced with another service. Every user reveived a mail from groupwise, saying goodybe and apologising for all problems such as server crashes, that happened from time to time, formulated as if the service itself wrote it. The mail ended with "So long and thanks for all the fish"

"You may not share our intellect, Which might explain your disrespect For all the natural wonders that grow around you" Boy is that more and more real with every passing day. I keep thinking that it'd be a lot happier of an ending for the species on Earth to be able to escape to space instead of burning up and being choked to death over here.

when my younger brother and i were little back in the early 2000s, we absolutely loved this so much, we'd ask mom to turn on the movie so much- we saw this so many times we could practically quote the entire movie by memory.

"It's an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was the most intelligent species occupying the planet, instead of the third most intelligent. The second most intelligent creatures, were of course dolphins who, curiously enough, had long known of the impending destruction of the planet Earth. They had made many attempts to alert mankind to the danger, but most of their communications were misinterpreted as amusing attempts to punch footballs or whistle for titbits. So they eventually decided they would leave Earth by their own means. The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards somersault through a hoop while whistling "the Star-Spangled Banner", but in fact, the message was this: [dolphin freeze-frames in mid-air] "So long, and thanks for all the fish!"

“Like our Prince and Reenies mom, all the dolphins have moved on, signaling the final curtain call in all it’s atomic pageantry. Bravissimo hip-hip hooray, what a glorious display, melt our joyous hearts away, under the mushroom cloud confetti. Hip-hip hooray, for the fireworks display, mind and body blown away, what a radiant crescendo!”
