We just moved to Germany a few months ago! As a family with 4 kids. It wasn’t easy at all, but so worth it for the lifestyle change. My resting heart rate has even improved with all of the outdoor exercise we get now! We’ve been sharing videos on YT about our travels as well.

Just like everybody else here, got excited that you uploaded a new video but did not expect a shoutout when I watched! Thanks so much for that, man. Of course, we have been watching your videos for a long time now and have always enjoyed your unique storytelling style as well! Our suggested feed is also packed with so many Americans moving to Germany and it seems like we discover new ones every day. Really enjoy the ones you mentioned also! Would love to get everybody together one day when it is possible and we can all swap stories and experiences!

I just recently discovered A Merry Messy Life, another American family who just moved to Southern Bavaria with their 4 kids (and cat.). Kevin and Sarah are very likeable and open-minded and they always try their best to adapt to the culture and customs of their new home. I really enjoy their videos because you get an insight into what it’s like for a family to move to a foreign country. Being a teacher, I find it particulary interesting to see their kids' language development and how they cope with the new school system. I highly recommend their channel!

I would love to move to Germany. I loved it when dad was stationed there from ‘83-92. I was 9 when we moved there and 16 when came back to the US. Talk about culture shock. I know it’s changed in the almost 30 years I’ve been gone. So I’d need to visit first and take my hubby 😊 but with Covid one good thing that’s happened is I’ve been able to reconnect with my German friend.

You just mentioned my favorite US-to-Germany-KZbinrs. Donnie and Aubrey go very deep into research, an absolutely must-see channel. Tommy is a funny guy with really good german language skills so far. And Our story to tell is such a lovey couple/young family. A completely other type of lifestyle / experience can be seen on My Merry Messy Life, where Sara and Kevin moved a family of 6 (plus cat) to Germany. They live in the South of Bavaria and share their special kind of life, encounters, experiences and thoughts in and about Germany.
@wora1111

Ja, but these are a special kind of people, they came with the intent to integrate and did not expect that people adapt to them but rather the other way around. Open minded people like that I will welcome every day. To be honest, most of (permanent or temporary) immigrants lately seem to show this attitude, at least those that I am following

I like the blogs that don't tear down their home country. You should speak about the differences but a lot of the younger girls are just negative about the USA and then they often ask, why Germany do you do it this way? you can't have it both ways. all countries have good in bad and I like watching vlogs where the approach is not full of hate or dislike and not trying to win viewers by being negative.

The training display thingies in parks have been a thing since the 1980s - called Trimm-dich-Bewegung. We have a cute little Trimm-dich-Pfad in our city, it's 2.5 km with several fitness stations every few hundred metres. I haven't done the fitness stations bc I live on the other side of the cities and it feels weird driving there with the car to run and do fitness in the woods...but they recently renewed some of the fitness stations so I guess I will probably try them sometimes the next weeks? Yeh, I think it‘s the KZbin algorithm as that‘s how I found them and your channel, so it might be a little misleading. It‘s interesting watching new Americans come over. I came to Germany in 1981. It would be interesting to here about your experience with the „dark side“ of being an Expat, like having to file both German and US Taxes, going to the Ausländeramt, renewing your passport, etc. Very few of the „other channels“ are really living on/in the German economy as they have jobs at US bases and enjoy some benefits through that.

It's worth noting that American opera singers (and those from other countries) have been going to Germany and German-speaking Europe for decades because of the amount of opportunity there and the amazing training ground it could be. These include some great Americans like Marilyn Horne, Jessye Norman, Barbara Daniels, James King, Chris Merritt--the list is endless! Two current examples are baritone Jarrett Ott and countertenor Nicholas Tamagna, both amazing singers. (I tried it myself in the 1990s, but as with athletics, poor preparation leads to success exactly nowhere.)

Those bloody rear-window wipers! My only experience with them is when I use car sharing, and I can never figure out how to turn them off, either! It doesn‘t help that it seems to be a different car model every time so it is always different. Plus, they don‘t start up until you are driving, so at every red light I‘m pushing and pulling levers and buttons, doing everything BUT turning off the rear-window wipers! GRRRR!!!!

1. May is not a "German" holiday... is actually the international work day. Is celebrated in whole Europe and I think other countries around the world for sure. It actually leaves me a bit sad thinking you don´t know about it it. Is it because don´t have it in the US? Anyway there is an old tradition which is exclusively in the south of Germany (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg), and it´s doing a marriage proposal on the first of May.

Got your collarbone in surgery mended. Any nerve problems in the aftermath? They told my daughter it's not necessary. The bones reconnect after 6 months. Lifting objects is still bothering her...

Germans like this kind of videos. What think other people about things we do but also what is different in other countries and stories from Germans abroad.

The rear windshield wiper problem. I am already confused with that one, too. Apparently I can turn it on without thinking, but how to turn it off I am always confused as well. But I lack your ability to get over my inner Schweinehund regarding sports. :|

The more often I watch culture shock videos by American KZbinrs in Germany, the more I believe that the greatest culture shock for most Americans is that life outside the USA can be completely different than in the USA. Can there be anything to it?
@insertnamehere6434

I think the fact that Europe is usually equated with USA (or more broadly North America) plays a factor. When I say 'equated' I mean whenever someone says 'western culture/the west' or any similar names it's followed by an aspect that only (or mostly) applies to the US. Europeans themselves experience culture shocks too, I don't think on such a scale though, since the countries are packed alongside each other. In other words, traveling and seeing for yourself is much easier. I think in Europe in general, the expectation is that your neighbouring country _is different_ . I've heard from some other similar channels that a lot of Americans live in a bubble, so that might actually be the actual reason.
