Boy, you really scored big time with the 5170. The neck on the TRS80 seems to be easily broken. I have one just like that. I would love to see an LCD conversion on it.

TRS80 M4 mod to LCD. Also which version M4 is it. there were 2 I think (not 4p)

If you already have a similar working TRS-80, then definitely go for the LCD route. If you don't, then it's a tough call.

I love your e-waste videos! There is nothing like that anywhere near me, so I can live vicariously. I’m no expert on this, but I think you have an EGA card in that 5170. From other videos I’ve watched, I think those two RCA ports are indicative of EGA, not CGA. I think they are for light pens or something like that. And before you said it, I was going to suggest you try replacing that CRT with an LCD with RGBtoHDMI. So yeah, I’d love to see that!

Last step: Reassemble, kill CRT. Been there, done that. I know that crushing realization of the irreversible reality. You sit there, stare at the thing and hate yourself for a bit. That liitle *pshhh* sound haunts me in my sleep sometimes. But hey! You can even do it with modern LCDs! I recently tried to fix an 40" LCD Panel. The repair worked, but then, when exhilaratedly fetching the back metal part of the panel, in one swift, beautifully arcing movement, I SLICED through one of the flex cables from the PCB to the LCD glass. Disbelief, self loathing, defeat. But finally: Oh well, back to eWaste it is, then...

I’d go for the flat screen mod on the TRS-80! Besides, you’ve just done that with the Sony Trinitron, and the outcome was amazing!

I'll go for the LCD option for future proof... and yes I think you should put up a poll and let's see which way it'll go...❤

That scope is similar to the test equipment in use when I started out my mechanic career. I would love to get a hold of it but I really don't have the time or space for it. If nothing else, save the CRT if it still works, they, as you know, will become impossible to find in the not to distant future.

Hook up a flatscreen that can be easily reverted and keep a look out for a CRT.

The video card on the 5170 is actually an EGA, it just happens to be the original IBM version (which was a long card like the CGA and MDA). These cards only have 64k of VRAM on them, which means the 350-line color mode won't work (it needs at least 128k VRAM).

That's really cool that you are able to pick items from your local E-waste company. Too bad my local company does not allow this.

Rumor has it there will be a scheduled speaker at VCFMW 2024 from a national e-waste company sharing tips and techniques about how to properly talk to and deal with your local e-waste facility in order to increase the chances of uncovering great finds just as you have!

Ooh! Battleship keyboard! I have one. It worked wondefully until the welded clips on the bottom gave way. It's fixable, I just haven't had time.

What I'd rather see is an E-Ink screen. THink about it- a TRS-80m4 with a daylight happy display! (Oh, and yeah, it sucks you broke it.. but many have done worse things...)

I would definitely put a flat lcd screen in the trs80. I would like to find a nonworking one and put an LCD in it along with a modern motherboard and where the drives are. I would like to see if I can put every type of peripheral there are from 5.25 3.5 CD DVD jazz SD reader Every single type so that I can use it to make discs and CDs for other vintage computers I’m not sure if that’s possible to hook up so many drives to modern motherboard, but I certainly plan on trying once I find one!

"Akai" is Japanese for Red. They made some truly high quality gear back in the day. Kraft also made some of the better early radio control equipment for modelers. That 5170 is truly clean! That Model 4 would be a good candidate for a flat-panel conversion. Don't beat yourself up - it happens, man. (Upvoted on @garthhowe297's comment)
