My ship was Kenji and Eri in season 1 but a Kenji and Yakumo fan during season 2. I was sad when they didn't do a third season and the manga ended. It was heartfelt and I wish there was more. I wanted to watch them grow even more.

Id say this was a solid review. Anyone singing School Rumble's praises gets my Love immediately. Tho being that I am such a huge fan of the series, I was saddened that you only focused on the comedy of the series as School Rumble offers way more than solid comedy. Its drama is well-executed and touching in many points and is one of the few anime to pull off a good balance of comedy and drama without one cannibalizing the other. The characters are rich, not just in the comedy, but in personality and development. All but one character have very distinct characteristics that separate them from other characters. Not to mention how on-point the chemistry is among characters. I also wish you touched a bit on the romantic elements in the series as there are plenty of heartwarming, sweet moments between these characters. And lastly...... WHY YOU NO TALK ABOUT YAKUMO!?!?!?! You mention how no one stands up for Harima yet you brush off Yakumo, Harima's biggest defender AND supporter!? Sorry, Yakumo is my favorite female anime character OF ALL TIME so I get defensive when people criticize or don't show her the love she deserves. I would like to know what you thought of her if this comment ever reaches you. Thats all I had to say. Thank you for giving the series a second chance. I'm glad you liked it and you gave us a solid review. Good job! :)

School Rumble is probably my all time favorite anime. Harima has one of the best character developments and is one of the few "bad boys with good heart" done well. Nearly all the side characters are reasonably well developed and there is more than one romance developing. Meaning it feels more like the whole school is alive instead of just revolving around the main characters. There are no cliched assholes to create drama, instead the conflict arrives from the missunderstandings between ultimately good people with flaws, which is, as strange as it sounds given the outlandishness of some of the missunderstandings, pretty realistic compared to evil guys just being evil for plot reasons. The only downside is the lack of a real third season, meaning instead of a satisfying complete experience they skip a lot of their last year and the series ends with two OVAs. But at least there IS an ending for anime only viewers. Everyone else can read the skiped parts in the manga. Be aware though that at times the series, especially later, turns from comedy into serious drama. Last but not least: Once you are finished read School Rumble Z, at least the last chapter. It pretty strongly hints at which ship won in the end. It´s not considered 100% canon, but it´s from the author and the best we are gonna get conclusion wise.

School Rumble fan here, and really liked this review. All nostalgia googles aside, you do make some very valid points, and it's nice to hear an objective, measured opinion on a series that had been so polarizing some odd years ago (especially re: ships..). I was really surprised to hear you analyse the series' whole schtick as "The universe hates Harima", as in my eyes everybody tended to get a share of terrible karma, but now that I think about it, that's pretty accurate... Which would make him the only Woobie I can tolerate. Damn. As far as I'm concerned, the strength of School Rumble lies in its characters; and on that note, thank you, both for the way you described Akira (most probably the best friend to have in this entire school) and Eri. Eri especially is frustrating to me because she could have been so much more. You've got an entire cast of colorful idiots, and then there's Eri. The situations involving her I've always felt as so much more contrived and owing much more to clichés and tropes than the others - it's like she belongs in a different manga. So, yes, I see what you're coming from.

I loved the comedy in this anime even tho its cheesy but,Character wise i only kept to watch it becuase of Harima i swear to jesus Harimas moments in this anime are absurd and hilarious also he is a pretty good character while most of the characters are okay to ehh. The ending of the story in the manga was shit,Harima doesnt end up with any girl and Tenma gets rejected while karasuma leaves,this is enough detail to see where the ending got to i dont need to say more.

i really enjoyed this anime because many of the tropes(and trope breakers) i laughed at or found to be a nice romance that makes me want to ship. For Haruma, it is hard for me to decide between rich girl and Tenma's sister because they both fall for him for their own good reasons.

Yakumo is my waifu, Akira is my best frendo, and Robyn is a God. I have all the DVD, and all the manga that was published in the US, unfortunately the manga series was never finished here in America, but you can get it in the original Japanese(if you can read it), it's a great animé and the manga is even better. P.S. The English dub is very good, but the one make in Spain is Superb(is in Spanish obviously), the quality is very good and the translation from Japanese to Spanish is excellent, if you know Spanish I recommend that you watch it in this language, (para los hispano ablantes no vean el doblaje latino, el Castellano de España es mucho mas divertido y el hacento no esta tan marcado como en otras series).

I have to ask, did you watch the two OVAs that replaced the third season? Because Eri for me was the best girl, and those OVAs pretty much cemented that (as the manga in the third year would have, if one read it). Because I pretty much got the feeling that Eri is NOT your typical rich girl. She is a tsundere yes, but only to Harima. Mostly because she geniuinly thought of him as a thug for the longest time, because that´s what he was. But other than most rich girls she actually tries her hardest on her own and dislikes that image. She never insists on that she is special just because she is rich. Her standing up to and up for Harima were part of her pretty realistic world view.

I once owned a DVD of this series, and still recall an episode where the female lead wore a luchadore mask to a gym class wrestling contest. I couldn't help shaking my head as she tried to get out of a pin by reaching for a "bottom rope".
