Intramuros is one of the biggest remnants of the Spanish colonization in the Philippines. Its purpose is to be a fortress of the Spanish while making a city inside of its stone walls. That is why inside there are still preserved Spanish architecture buildings while others were just rebuilt with the same original architecture since Intramuros and the entire Manila itself was heavily bombed during World War 2.

INTRAMUROS served as the seat of government of the Captaincy General of the Philippine Islands when their central colonial rule transferred in Manila. This walled city had also been fully controlled by the Americans during the PHILIPPINE-AMERICAN WAR (1899). The BATTLE IN MANILA (1945) during WORLD WAR II entirely flattened Intramuros. Though reconstruction efforts began immediately after the WAR, many of its original landmarks are still lost today. Intramuros is still in the process of postwar reconstruction and revival of its CULTURAL HERITAGE.
