So much hype for this one... | Bunnahabhain 12 Cask Strength 2022

I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Bunnahabhain distillery on Islay today. This is the Cask Strength 12 year old from 2022. It's become quite the hit. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

Sipping it now. Absolutely world class. Fruity, spicy. Supremely delicious! No water needed - it is that smooth. One of the best whiskies I have ever had since I started my journey in 2007.

Agree with you and every other reviewer. This is one of the best whiskies I’ve had in a long long time. I’ll be surprised if this is not the OSWA whisky of the year for 2023. Amazing stuff.

The neck pour of the B12-22 was epic but then settled into very good. I did two separate blinds comparing B12-21 & B12-22… The 22 might be “ better” but I preferred the 2021 each time. Cheers 🥃

No Bunna CS around here. But it's cool. Even though I wish it was, I don't think my palate is quite there yet to enjoy cask strength whiskies (although I'm practicing with the Glenfarclas 105 I got as a gift... it was a gift, can't complain). I'll gladly wait for the Tamdhu 12 I just ordered... gotta climb that ladder slowly. Cheers!

I bought my Dad a bottle of this for his Birthday last month. It would have been rude of me not to try it and if you like a sherried whisky, this is up there with the best I’ve tasted. My Dad also loved it and chose it over a Glendronach 15yr Cask Strength in a blind taste. He described it as Christmas cake in a glass. I personally feel it’s also a reasonable price here in the UK given the quality at £75. Highly recommended!

Congrats on scoring a couple bottles. I bought 4, and, along with the Benromach 10 Cask Strength from last year, it’s the best I tried in 2022. One thing though…it’s very winey in flavor and sometimes I’m not in the mood for that, but when I am it’s a big beauty. Just superb.

Wow! High praise. Is tour 21 an IB? I prefer the older 18 to this, although the newer 18 isn't quite as good. For me this is now the top of their affordable core range. 🥃

Have 2 bottles in the stash ... very pleased I am. If you are looking out for a whisky to give a bit of love to, the Glen Elgin 12yo is a nice every day dram that carries a bit more than you expect and is a good little bottle. Like your Craigallachie 13yo, it's one of those under the radar bottles. It's no 91 (oops, sorry) - 92 pointer but bang for buck it's solid.

Hah I've got a bottle of the Elgin on the go. This bottle I find just ok, but I've had some great bottles of it in the past. A really dark, full maltiness to it. Sometimes. Seems there are some batch issues. But yes... it's good! 🥃

Great review. The 2021 was really just an amped up version of the standard 12 year. Still delicious and super drinkable. Me and a group of friends finished it in 1 night. The 2022 is a totally different whisky that stands on its own and is probably more in profile with whiskies of the past with the earthiness and strong cask influence. The quality is hard to beat for the price. I loaded up. 🥃

Hi Geoff, great review; so glad you liked this. I adore this whisky! When price is considered probably my best buy of 2022, hell it's probably my best buy regardless of price! I'm not usually a massive sherry bomb fan, but this is sweet and savoury and spicy and intense AF all at once. One thing you didn't mention was whether you tried it with water? A drop of water and it clouds up like nothing I've ever seen at well above 46% (first time I added water, it got so cloudy so quickly, I thought I'd drowned it, but nah, it's just oily AF, which I love). A note on price, I think the UK price of £60 you are quoting is the sales tax/VAT-free export price (which is what you will have paid to a UK supplier before import taxes were added at your end). The UK domestic price with VAT (sales tax) added is typically £70-75, which is still great value for the experience. This is a future modern classic IMO and like you, I've stocked up. I was lukewarm on Bunna as a distillery before trying this but it's totally won me over. Hope the 2023 edition is as good.

And yes... you're absolutely right. The listed price I see as an international visitor to the site does not account for the taxes you pay. £70 seems to be as cheap as you can get it for over there. This is one I really want to get my hands on. I loved Laphroaigs Cairdeas 2021 Sherry CS. I also recently had An Orkney 12yr CS 56.4abv Sherry from "The Single Malts of Scotland" that was super dark, slightly peated, just awesome.

I searched and searched and searched for this one from 2021 onwards. I always have a bottle of the 18 open and really enjoy it as an alternative to those deep plummy character sherry whiskies. Being mostly or exclusively PX, it is a little lighter and more citrus and possibly more complex. Even last week, my local store in Netherlands offered to order one for me only to then let me know the local distributor was sold out. I was unhappy. One day later I walk into one of my regular shops where I go and there they have the 2023 on the shelf. Bought it immediately. What I can say is the price has increased - a LOT. Just under 100 euros for the bottle but I thought I need one. Haven't tasted it yet but it is one of my most anticipated whiskies of the past 2 years.

Have one of these put away. When the 2021 was released I got so excited I paid way too much to order from the UK right away. Later it made it to California for a very reasonable price. The 2021 is perfectly fine but not as good as I was expecting. When this 2022 was released to such fanfare I waited for it to make it here and bought one. Cheers

Great vid, as ever! Thanks! I bought two bottles of this when it came out direct from the distillery. Frustratingly they dropped the price by about 15 pounds a month or two after launch. I live in Canada so sent to by buddy in the UK. I gave him one and one was to come to me when and if he can ever be bothered to visit. In short, I'll probably never taste this😢

Your review tells me, the 2022 Bunna 12 CS is great and the score reflects that. I will never know how different the 2022 release is from the 2021 release which I currently have. I will keep an eye out on travels and maybe I will get lucky to find a bottle of 2022 Bunna 12 CS.

It seems there was some bourbon barrel influnce, but not much. The website states a small percentage of bourbon barrels were used to "balance out the flavour." Cheers. 🥃

Świetna recenzja, miałem wrażenie, że ten odcinek miał być banem na hajp z tą butelką związany ale do tej opcji serio ciężko się przyczepić. Pyszna, mocna whisky w cenie niejednego słabego malta :) 92 ocena trochę przesadzona ale solidne 89 to i tak informacja, że warto kupić zwłaszcza, że jest jeszcze dostępna :) z innej beczki to ten kanał wyrasta na jeden z moich ulubionych i przepraszam, że piszę w języku polskim ale chcę pokazać zasięg tego kanału i trzymam kciuki za rozwój :) jak ktoś będzie chciał to sobie odpali translator :D

​@@Gwhisky I just opened my Single Malts of Scotland Bunnahabhain 11 Cask Strength last night inspired by your review. Probably the most greasy oily mouthfeel I've ever had, extremely long finish! Really great off the neck pour, drinks WAAAAY below the 58.5%. Bad with notes but it's balanced between their malt character and sherry, honestly not a lot of RICH sherry notes at all. It's awesome... I think I need to buy another bottle just to stash, It's expensive but I'm really liking this experience. Smelling my glass right now, has a nice nuttiness with humid wood sauna, hints of smoke.

Might the GWhisky cooling on Bunna be because the - my term - "funny" second maturation casks are beginning to dominate? Wouldn't it be nice, just occasionally, to see a bourbon matured spirit, bottled at the right time?

Great video as always. It is hyped though. It really is. I have a bottle and I'm enjoying it but I have the same reservation as our friend Whisky Lock. Here in the U.K it casts twice the price as the regular 12 and when you add water to it it doesn't taste that much different. That's quite a lot of money for some abv. That's my reservation. I suppose I'm saying that good old fashioned Bunnahabhain 12 is a cracker of a whisky which works great at 46% and half the price. That's two for the price of one. I'm glad I got the Cask Strength and I'm enjoying it but I don't think I'll buy another unless the price comes down. WT

I get straight fudge when i drink this. But not a mass produced cheap fudge a proper home made refined fudge made with real un-refined brown pure cane sugar. Its super rich, syrupy but has an deep earthy, almost smoke whispering essence lurking in the back. Fantastic stuff.

@Gwhisky I’m heading back to the UK in a couple of weeks, and I’m looking at buying something nice and I’m torn between this and an Ardnamurchan sherry cask… they’re both similarly priced, which would you go for? There’s an additional factor too: the Bunna cask 2023 might be getting released soon, so maybe I should wait for that and see if it’s even better? I’ll also be going back to UK for Xmas and might by then have the choice between the ‘22 and ‘23.

I'd go for the Ardnamurchan personally, but that's only because I haven't tried it yet and I'm very excited to find a bottle for myself. Sadly I can't compare the two for you, though. Having tried the Bunna and from what I hear about the Ardnamurchan, you can't go wrong with either. 🥃

Where I live, that's the listed price on Master of Malt. However, I've since been informed that international viewers on the page are given the listing without UK taxes added. We do, of course, have additional shipping and import fees. Apparently nobody over there can buy it for less than £70. 🥃

Modern Bunna i find underwhelming - the feis bottlings are pretty erratic and very random. Its decent but meh.....price point for a 12 CS seems crazy....and any distillery character? Seems very cask/wood orientated?
