Wanted to clarify. Not saying that an adaptation has to do what fma 2003 and og shaman king did and add in a bunch of scenes. It's fine to just faithfully adapt the manga, but if the story doesn't fit the anime format, that's when it becomes necessary to make changes.

I don't understand how someone could realistically defend this adaptation... I mean, it's fine if many people enjoy it, I'm happy for them, but it's clear that they're harming the show by cutting so much stuff. I was so hyped for this adaptation, I was jumping for the excitement in my apartment when I first saw the trailer one year ago, but sadly this doesn't even come close to the quality of the manga (so far).

I consider myself a big shaman king fan. I think it's my favorite anime.(the 2001 one i mean). And i agreed with everything you said in the vid. I grew up with shaman king. I looked up to yoh and the others like role models. I screamed like a little school girl when i learned it was getting a reboot. And now i see that the new 2021 anime is a colorized manga but with less inspired art and bad editing and beating me on the head with exposition because the animation studio is too lazy to actually animate important story moments that gives the show substance. The person in the video who made that comment probably has brain damage or is 12 years old. I see so many youtubers praise the 2021 version but everything they say they like about the episodes didn't actually happen in the episodes. I think they made the story make sense in their head out of necessity.

I watched the first 5 or 6 episode of the new adaptation, the character introductions and characterisation were much worse in my opinion, I pointed that in a few episodes that they skipped a ton of build up, and the retort was always "BuT iT wAs LiKe ThAt In ThE mAnGa" as if it justified alot of things being worse, this is the one show that has great "filler" adding more charecter to the characters in the show, especially Ren's introduction, when he confronted Menta threatening Yo and than walking on to the street on a red light slicing an upcoming truck in half, showing how threatening he is, instead of fighting a bunch of dutchbags on the street. Also Yo got his ass kicked the first time they met, adding to Ren's menacing presence.

I say this with pretty much all adaptation arguments; if we can have over 100 adaptions of A Christmas Carol and enjoy them for their differences, why can we not embrace anime that dare to take creative liberties? Part of the reason I was looking forward to this anime is that I wanted to see things changed that the manga didn't have time to expand upon like more fleshed out matches in the shaman fight, and *SPOILERS* "A fight between Hao in his Blackbird armor oversoul and Yoh's swan armor oversoul which the mangaka even wished he had the opportunity to add in the story.

If I can watch the original shaman king with an online filler guide and this new adaptation faithfully adapts the ending I’ll be fine with the 2021 anime. I do think the original's early episodes are better in a way, I do think that what the current anime staff went for is a very good approach. Because the original manga is so long and they only have 52 or something episode contract they decided to adapt the entire manga story in those episodes, forcing them to rush through specific parts to make that feasible. It's not confirmed that that is what's going on but I personally think they wanted to reduce risks of it getting cancelled before they could finish it. But that last section is purely speculation.
@gravethestampede34543 жыл бұрын
I too am not a big fan of the "well it doesn't matter since that's not how the manga was" arguments since I've been seeing it 2009. A lot of ideas in the old Shaman King anime were fine, such as Horohoro's early introduction and an original plot point with the X-All Laws later on. Stuff like the bizarre censorship of Yoh vs Faust and the ending, which was neither in the spirit of the original manga nor did it do the antagonist any justice, is stuff that this new anime can rectify however. So far, it's just going about everything in a lame, soulless manner. FMAB had condense 27 volumes into 64 episodes, Shaman King's reboot'a task seems even more daunting if the BluRay episode count of 52 is anything to go by, since the Kan-zen-bang edition of the manga had the equivalent of 35 volumes, and the strain of trying to do everything might be causing trouble. I'm even more inclined to believe the FMAB theory of the beginning episodes being compromised to get past what was in the previous adaptations. There was an obvious concerned effort to appeal to fans of the older anime in both the new OP, and reusing both the song and visuals from the first OP of the new anime, so you can't say it wasn't made with the previous adaptation in mind this time.

SPOILERS FOR DEATH NOTE I watched Death Note (first anime) a little over a year ago after hearing people talk about even if you don't like anime you'll like this and I wasn't really a fan of it. I felt that most of the attempts at substance were very surface level and obvious and didn't really expand past their conceptual level. It was fun for about fifteen episodes or so but after that I felt it got way too convoluted and had really tossed a bunch of needless excess onto a picture that actually started out kind of nice. However I wasn't actively hating the show until L died. I wasn't big on it before that point but once that happened everything just plunged into the shitter. Everything after that point was just endless slogs of boring exposition that didn't make any sense and characters I couldn't be paid to give 1/87th of a fuck about. The reason I bring all of this up is because after I finished watching the show I started looking up videos discussing the last third of the show and why they thought it was a great wrap up to a great story. One video in particular brought up what were two of my biggest complaints in this part of the show, which were: 1. How Near concludes that Mikami is working with Kira literally just because he sees him on TV defending Kira. The way he deduces that Light is Kira in general makes zero sense but this bit in particular really annoyed me. The person brought up that he actually DID have good reason (don't remember details) to specially zero in on Mikami but he used the MANGA to prove his point, in a video where he was discussing the ANIME. Im watching this and I'm thinking uhhhhhhhh buddy we're not talking about the manga. Then he says something along the lines of "sure the translation between mediums didn't include all the details, but do you really need the show to explain everything to you?" Yes honey, I DO require that a cat-and-mouse thriller with characters that are supposed to not be complete idiots puts more effort into getting from point A to point B then whatever I was spoon-fed here. Give me a goddamn break. 2. The part in episode 29 where Mello blows up the entire building with Soichiro, Matsuda, Aizawa etc inside and yet they're all perfectly fine. Once again this person uses a manga panel to make their point, talking about how Mello actually only blew up a certain portion of the building rather than the whole thing. He doesn't have the same get-on-my-level-heathen attitude of the the previous thing, but again we're not talking about the manga. The shows on US Netflix right now, so I actually want you to check this for yourself. Go to episode 29 and watch that scene. Does that look like a "portion of the building" to you? Because to me it pretty clearly displays a classic case of a building's carpentry work being told to turn around and bend over. People need to understand that criticizing a story for having a fundamental inability to connect plot beats in a coherent and believable manner is not nItPiCkInG. Bullshit. It's not my fault you don't know how to tell a story. Fucking do better. One more thing. This will probably sound really rude to a certain group of people but I don't think the people that say something is bad purely because it doesn't perfectly line up with the source material understand how art works. I'm not saying it's wrong to personally prefer or think the source material is better, not at all. I'm very specifically talking about the wannabe Stalinists that are all like HOW DARE ARTISTS HAVE VISIONS. Art is an act of personal expression. The key word here is personal. This is why I get really bothered when people automatically attribute an adaptation having a different personality than its source material to tHeY dIdN't CaRe or something along those lines. When you get a regurgitation of someone else's personal vision, that's exactly what you get. A regurgitation. Also, fun fact, the Death Note anime was written by Toshiki Inoue, the man responsible for 4 of the 51 episodes of FMA03, two of which include Taj Mahal and Killer Tits Trinity.

Just because he is loving or liking the new anime does not mean fans or new people cannot not like it or hate it. Weather he wants to believe it or not the new anime has been mixed by many it's not universally being praised as the superior adaption or praised like brotherhood what many had thought this was going be treated as from Beginning TO End. I just hope it picks up since it feels so rushed and that it will hit its stride in its later half. Him saying having no knowledge then knowledge of prior versions is confusing.

Hurts to admit but the reboot has been pretty bad even though binging it is still very entertaining and is great for me as a person who's very familiar with the source material but I can't imagine it's really good for new viewers. the rushed pace kills so much of the "mood" we got in the manga, the tiny but brilliant character interactions that make them just so lovable... plus the fighting scenes aren't terrible but are only one step better than the original anime and that's just not what I hoped for. BUT I feel like the creators of the new anime will definitely slow down soon and we'll get to see the manga-only moments much better adapted or I'd just be totally heart-broken. I'm a total Hao simp so if that's not handled good, imma riot ;(

I watched both videos back to back. I haven't seen 2021, but I still think it's a big leap to assume the series is rushing to the original manga material unless it's been specified somewhere. If this is supposed to be the "Brotherhood" series, then why not open on an original new episode to set it apart from the start as Brotherhood did? And when that first cour of episodes was being rushed, I saw many newcomers still get attached to the characters and stories that were breezed over. Of course, 13-ish episodes can't compare to twice the length, but there was still certainly competent execution being done there if Brotherhood was less controversial than Shaman King 2021. I also agree with you that adapting the manga too closely can be harmful. I'll have to take your word for how the scenes play out. But if that is the case, then naturally the 2001 series is going to greater lengths with better results to elaborate on events and pace them more fittingly for episodic and animated consumption. I've also debated with people before on this same subject of elaboration not automatically equating to filler. It will never not blow some people's minds when they meet someone else who doesn't always think the original is better, and that adaptations can improve things in the right hands.

Yeah this reboot is not going to be another HxH 2011 or FMAB, for starters the new animation doesn't even compare to either of those prime examples of how to do a reboot, and even those two reboots nailed the characterization from the get go. FMAB even did a filler first episode solely to get everyone on the same page without botching the manga, unlike this Shamman 2021 which has done nothing but botch the manga. Lastly the fact that they are trying to squeeze even more volumes than FMA in just 52 eps is prove that this is going to be rush from start to finish. I really don't get why fans are so optimistic.

At the end of the day you can only like what you like. I've just come to aspect that 2021 will most likely not be a "perfect" version of the series. I always recommend people check out the source material for anything they REALLY, like REALLY get into from the adapted form of medium. Just some aspects of this story won't get across in any form outside of manga and that's the great thing about different adaptations. Even adaptions that people personally love like the MHA anime I just out right prefer the manga in almost every respect outside of stuff that manga can't do, like animation and music. That stuffs ace in that series but damn they can't touch Hori's art and how he depicts certain scenes, that the anime screws up. (Deku vs Gentle in the anime is just so much worse for example...) I guess what I'm trying to say is that I like the 2001 version of SK for being a different take on the series. I dislike how it handles somethings but it's a fun time. I enjoy the manga for being a great visual and wonderful story full of heart even though it's nowhere near perfect. I can't say much on 2021 yet but I do think calling it awful is a bit much. It's definitely nothing amazing. I do see passion within the team for every aspect of this series and it sucks that they are pushed to adapt the manga in the limited time they're given. Would amazing animation be cool? Absolutely. However nothing in that camp has been abysmal in my eyes, just very standard and bland. I think the VA has been phenomenal so far. I can get why Takei wanted mostly everyone back and they've only gotten more seasoned over the years. The music I've heard has been surprisingly good. Just wish the show had more unique framing and used the realm of animation to their benefit. That's something 2001 was able to do at times with its heavy moody colors and scenery play which built an atmosphere. I feel it has gotten better with each episode so far with five and six at the time. I really just had fun with episode six even if most of what I said sticks. I'm looking forward to how all this will turn out when we get to parts that haven't been adapted. That to me is the most important aspect of this reboot. It also seems the show is doing well in Japan and if that gets more people reading the manga in the end I can't be all that mad if they end up botching this but I'm actually more optimistic then I'm usually am. lol In the end people should just be respectful of others when sharing their opinions. Just don't make disingenuous arguments without having the full understanding of what you're talking about. I can fall into that trap sometimes and I want to grow from that. Anyway good discussion piece!

@@etheri0n959 Yeah, I'm having fun but I can't ignore the missed opportunities here. Hii. Definitely agree that your opinion is more or less based. I'm a manga reader, old sk anime fan and currently keeping up with the new anime. As of now, episode 3 was by far the worst one for me, it was disjointed and sloppy, however... I'm still having a lot of fun watching these episodes, they are highlight of the week for me usually... The animation is indeed below average (on average). But I don't think that flashy scenes were ever essential since I look at SK more for the story it conveys as so many manga readers do, I came out of the story with zero fucks given about power levels or any of the late story fights, but astonished by the antagonist' s and protagonist's conversation near the climax of the story. (i totaly sound like a cheeky little elitist brat, don't I xD) Also I must mention that the studio is probably doing their best as they don't have much of a history behind them, they have made good and nice scenes here and there, I feel like every single episode has at least one very beautifully done scene, idk, might be just me since i love animating and I notice that kind of stuff even tho it may be really small compared to any other anime. And about the adaptation, yes, it is rushed, it will bring far less content to the table, and that's something I kind of already settled on. But I'm still being critical about how it presents the things it does present in the episodes, in most of the cases up till now (exept ep 3) I felt as tho they did a good job, they try to introduce a character, adapt the interaction between the characters and end the conflict by the end of the episode, it may be working for me since I'm familiar with the story, but it's actually working for my girlfriend too, she likes the anime and enjoys it even tho it might not be the best thing ever. So... Nothing bad to you, have a good day, everyone who enjoys the anime should enjoy it and everyone who doesn't just simply doesn't have to.

Yeah, and thats perfectly fine if you enjoy it. Sorry if it felt like I was trying to invalidate your tastes. But thanks for saying this. At the end of the day, you should like whatever you like. Thanks for watching.

The manga had more oomf... Big sad.. I've been trying to watch this as a new viewer since my husband hasn't seen much of the OG anime or read the manga even he is confused and has no attachment to the characters. It's been a disappointment. It's a pretty anime... But its a pretty disappointment. Edit// I've also been a fan of shaman king growing up in early 2000s... as a long time fan and anticipated the reboot since the first news of it... and I've been severely disappointed.

And the dub of this remake in my opinion is horrible but not the old dub voice actors who came back in the remake.

Yeah while I agree with some points in your video I still think some of your arguments are nitpicking.

Would you care to clarify which of my points were nit picks?

We know the ending of shaman king was bad there’s no reason why he should’ve brought that up Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood it was extremely fast towards the beginning but then slowed itself down and followed the manga but if you don’t like shaman king 2021 that’s OK that’s fine everyone has a right to an opinion people sometimes

Yeah, and if you enjoy the new sk, that's completely fine too. Thanks for watching.

Here's my advice: If you talk about the meaning of the words, make sure you don't make the same mistake yourself or you will lose any credibility you had. A rushed anime and a fast-paced anime are two different things. The verb to rush always refers to production and sometimes rushing a product can result in cutting stuff. However, the Shaman King story is already finished. You can't rush it anymore. It is thus fast-paced. Also, I'm not here to tell who's right and who's wrong about the remake anime. I personally don't care and don't think people will end up agreeing on anything. The Shaman King manga is a unique shonen manga. It isn't a manga that everyone can enjoy in the first place nor is it a simple story. So it's obvious the anime adaptation would be criticized no matter what. Fun fact that has nothing do to with the video: you shouldn't pronounce the x in HxH^^

The manga may be finished, but the anime is still ongoing, and the anime is cutting out some stuff from the manga which is pretty important. Juns introduction for one. It also cuts out a boxing match from chapter 4 I believe, which while it is pretty minor, it shows off manta's love for martial arts, which makes his tearful speech in the pai long fight more impactful. The anime is still in production, therefore it can still be classified as rushed, not the manga, the New adaptation. Also, I know that you weren't trying to be disrespectful or add fuel to the fire, so thanks for adding your opinion.
