What really gets to me is seeing 3rd generation immigrant Spanish and Asian kids here in the USA who've never set foot in their parents native countries and yet speak fluent Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Mongolian and Hindi. I watch these kids at the mall with their peers talking in their parents native language yet kids who are born and bred in an African country don't even speak one native language. It really kills my soul how we are not realizing that in a few decades our culture and language would be lost.

I’m pedi, my husband is Xhosa. I hoped that he’d be the one to teach them Xhosa but that never happened. It kills me, it breaks my heart but I’m slowly working on it. I’m ashamed really.

@@tshegotams4546 we should be. Do you know how it breaks my heart when I see Jamaican kids born and raised in the US speak Jamaican patois with pride knowing full well kids in South Africa only speak English? When I see Irish descendents going to Irish celebrations after 500 years of leaving Ireland. White people and other races have preserved their languages and traditions as a way to be able to tell their stories and hold on tight to their heritage. When you don't safe guard your language you are literally letting go of your heritage, history and stories. In 50 years all the other ethnicities will be proudly holding on to their heritage whilst our kids have nothing but the English language which serves a fraction of their reality.

In my family it was rooted from oppression. Honestly can't even think in my own language because it was mostly used as a form of oppression knowingly and unknowingly so I couldn't even express myself in a healthy manner😂💔💀. So when I learned English it forced me to use my words ,it forced honesty without violence 🤣 AND I was taken to English schools. My family never really paid attention to the importance of culture. And I couldn't even communicate in a healthy way in my language. So many reasons in every family

Most African parents think just because their kids speak only English, it automatically means the kids are smart hence most parents aren't even speaking to their kids in their native languages. We are losing as Africans shame

Most of our kids are like these kids nje, the challenge is so common because they start creche in multiracial schools and learn to speak (English) there at the age of 2 or 3 and they do not stay with their grand parents. Its not like parents taught them English no they didn't.

@@evidencesithole768 lol you’re making an excuse, I have two little sisters who go to multi racial school 🙆🏾‍♀️ one is half colored they both know how to speak English but when they are home they speak our native language and whenever the other one goes to her other grandma’s house she’s speaks Afrikaans , it’s all not that hard to set rules in the house about speaking the native language .
@evidencesithole768

Its because you think situations are similar, for instance not all kids have grandmothers or township/village to visit because death robbed us of relatives, this is one example that shows that situations faced by your two little sisters are not similar to situations faced by all kids in S.A.

Unfortunately not all of us stay in places that have schools that teach IsiZulu, in Pretoria nje for instance there are very few of such schools and they are not close to everyone. Even schools that teaches IsiZulu in the suburban is not a kind of IsiZulu that you would say you would learn to speak Zulu out of it as it is taught as a third or second language with white scholars as part of that Zulu class. The struggle is real but ppl do not know, cos even kids from next door neighbors who play with our kids also speak English. We speak them in IsiZulu but kids respond in English
