Very powerful and sad song. Lennon had a somewhat traumatic child hood. By the age of five both of his parents had abandoned him and his mother Julia gave him up to her sister Mimi who was very strict but gave him a good upbringing. Strange thing was that just when he was reconnecting with his mother at I think age 17 or maybe 18 Julia was visiting Mimi. While walking home she was struck by a car that was driven by an off duty police officer and killed. John was devastated. When John and Paul hooked up in 1957 when John was 17 and Paul 15 when Johns mom was killed I'm pretty sure that John was a mess and asked Paul if he knew what that felt like. Paul revealed to John that he had lost his beloved mother to breast cancer when he was 14. If what I've read is correct Paul had never revealed this to John before and may be another Beatles myth and there are many. I do know though that both of them losing their mother's at a young age created an unbreakable bond between them that lasted for a decade until The Beatles broke up. They both stated that losing their mothers formed that unbreakable bond between two teens and look what that led up to. Just the greatest songwriting team and the greatest band in history. Sometimes tragedy can lead to something wonderful. Two tragedy's gave us a bond between two teens and these two then gave the world the gift of The Beatles. Kinda sounds like a made up Hollywood movie except but it really happened. You can't make that story up. With John's solo work there had never been anyone that could project their raw pain and emotion like John's voice could. You checked out "Cold Turkey" you can feel the pain of heroin withdrawal. Simply amazing. John Lennon was a one off, you ain't gonna see that again. Check out his song "Jealous Guy" from his 1971 album "Imagine". The Beatles split up in 1970 and it was messy. This song was a shout out to his best friend Paul about John's insecurities and is straight from the heart. Pretty emotional song. Peace

@@cuebj Amen Stephen, I couldn't express what you said any better. John was a tortured soul and was a horrible father to Julian. Only goes to show that all the fame and fortune in the world that so, so many would say I wish had that life. That stuff can't take that trauma away. I wouldn't want to be in John's shoes. So very sad that he did find peace in his life the last few years of his life and was even reconnecting with Julian. You could see that he was so happy to be raising Sean. John is my favorite artist of all time even with all of his faults. His wit, intelligence and incredible songwriting gift and that voice balances out the bad part of him for me. George was also a very interesting soul for me, him and John were always my favorite Beatles. Although George was the youngest in the band, he was probably the most mature of the four. Peace!

John Lennon's father was in the merchant navy and didn't want anything to do with him. His mother Julia, struggled to look after him, and he was raised by his Aunt Mimi. After a few years his mother tried to re-enter his life, but was tragically killed in an auto accident. So, this is JL reaching out to both of them. On the one hand saying he doesn't need them any more. But on the other, he is crying out for them. Sends chills down my spine.

John Lennon was going through Primal Scream therapy during the recording of this album to help him get over his traumatic past. His father had left the family but his mother died in a car accident when he was young and he was taken care of by his Aunt Mimi. During the therapy, he had to scream his trauma out. It actually worked for him. And you would be amazed at how many people this therapy helps. It also helped produce one of the best records ever. with John Lennon deciding to record his experience and emotional outpouring.

John shredding his vocal cords was magic. He was about 30 when he recorded this. He took a class on scream therapy that was a big influence on the song. So clearly Ringo on the drums too. Twist and Shout cover by the Beatles John did kind of the same thing. He always said "I am not singing the bloody thing I am just screaming". Amazing unique sound. So pointless some idiot cut his life short for no good reason when he was 40.

This is very much John's life. His Aunt Mimi raised him. That was his mother's sister. John's dad disappeared pretty much before John could really have many memories of him. Then when he reconnected with his mom in his teens she gets hit by a car and dies. His dad came back into his life just a few years before his death, if I remember this correctly. He may have come in a few times before, but it was only after John had become famous and rich. It effected him for so much of his life.

John played piano and guitar, Ringo Starr on drums, and their friend from Germany< Klaus Voorman, on bass. Yoko provided "vibes". John was sorting out his life. Yes, raised by his Aunt and Uncle. His Father was in the Merchant Navy during WW2, and really only wanted to reconnect with his Son, when John was famous. John's Mom, Julia left her son with her Sister, Mimi and went off to live life. John found as a teen that she only lived nearby in Liverpool. They started to get along. She taught him som music. She was hit by a drunk driver, walking across a street. John was sixteen. When he met Paul, his mother had died of cancer, but he had a very good Dad, who played in a local Jazz band, and worked at a good civil job to support his children. Contrast -but, that both young men lost their Mothers' was part of their bond.

Oh yeah. His parents ditched him. The tale often told is that when he was 5 or 6, his parents were breaking up and they put it to John to decide who he wanted to go with. How horrible is that to start with? It has been stated in some literature detailing this event that he chose his father at first, but as they were walking away he fled back to his mother. Shortly after this he was dropped off and raised by an aunt and uncle. They provided a fairly stable house but he carried this pain and resentment for most of his life. It pretty much explains John's the sharpness in his personality as well the underlying meaning in many of his songs. Then when he finally manages to become acquainted with his mom again several years later, she is killed...by a drunk come, no less. When he became famous worldwide, his father shows up wanting to reestablish connections. By that time John really didn't want to but then the press was putting out articles wondering why John's dad was washing dishes for a living instead of John taking care of him. So, he was guilted into dealing with his dad. John would later explain that he took care of his dad for 5 years which was how long his dad hung around for him. Fortunately, they apparently became more friendly toward the end of his dad's life. John's voice is remarkable. A fine blues singer. He wants to say goodbye to them for all the pain and yet, just like a child, finds he really still wants them. And so he screams out his pain at the end, just like a baby crying.

Love most Lennon songs, but most of your choices I’d skip over on a CD. Hope they don’t turn you off ! I’d suggest checking out “Power To The People” and “ Mind Games”.
