Lol! Garp actually appeared in the one shot 'Romance Dawn' that predates one piece, Garp takes the place of Shanks to inspire Luffy to be a pirate. So Oda gave Garp the dog hat to disguise him so fans who read 'Romance Dawn' wouldn't know that was Luffy's grandpa and he's just reusing the name lol

Never underestimate a vice admiral who go toe to toe with Roger 😂 well it will reveal in later episodes about why Garp is just a Vice Admiral. All I can say about it is it runs in the blood. Regarding to "He's the older version of Luffy". Yes you are right. Oda drew an older version of Luffy and he literally looks like Garp in his 60s.

If you want to see more stuff from other characters' perspectives you should look up the cover stories from the manga. Oda uses the cover pages to tell little side stories like the stuff with Coby and Helmeppo and Buggy's adventure, but most of them never got adapted to the anime.

Garp is actually one of my favorite characters in the entirety of One Piece... also probably one of the strongest characters even though he's 76 years old and far weaker than his prime. Man is like an older Luffy in a lot of ways. Just like with Luffy I find his insane manic grin infectious and feel like he can do anything. A lot of people look to Zoro for fitness inspiration... but Garp is my inspiration. Also at this point in the series I was also in the boat of wanting way more of the marine perspective. When I eventually™ got what I wanted it became one of my favorite segments in the entire story.

​@@Timberzy99they also omit Krieg (he's still there but he never raids the baratie) which a lot of fans disliked because Krieg is such an important stepping stone for Luffy, and Krieg's starvation sets up Sanji's character by making him either abandon his principles of feeding the hungry, or risk the baratie by feeding Krieg. Also, they don't use Overtaken as the music for the walk to Arlong Park. Not something a new anime watcher would care about, but the more you watch you more you'll understand just how necessary Overtaken is for those "I'm about to beat you up and liberate these people" moments.
