My son is #7 for the 88's and although he's obviously on the team opposing your kisdos team, I really appreciate your video work. I played hockey in the ‘70’s when you could check someone into the 3rd row before a penalty was called. Looked like a relatively clean game to me. No malicious hits. The refs let them play. The best hit was when #12 of white nailed the guy 6in. taller at center ice. Perfect hit. It’s hockey, not soccer.

Bantam is a serious step up - 13/14 yo's. It gets spicy because many of the 14 yo players have hit their growth spurt and are *much* larger than their 13 yo counterparts. Skate with your eyes up people.

Hey @4TheLoveOfHockey, I'm filming with a Sony FDR AX700. It's great for zooming in and out, and the 120fps gives me awesome slow-mo options. I've got two Insta360s on the goalies, but honestly, that might be a bit much. You'd probably be fine with just a handheld phone for most shots.

I feel this is fairly typical - - quite a few penalties though - not clean hitting for sure. Some of those are really just out to hit and injure as opposed to trying to just take off and obtain possession of the puck. That one hit at 5:50 - skate flies up in the air - that is when the danger happens. That skate blade was probably only about 3 inches or so from that opposing players face/neck.

@garrydale3601 Жыл бұрын
They need to bring checking back to Peewee. To much size difference when they get to bantam creating more injuries and more head contacts because these kids are just learning how to hit and more important on how to take a hit. My son just turned 14, he’s 6’ 2” 210lb defence man. He plays the game, doesn’t throw many checks and more less reverses any check coming at him but if he had a mean bone in his body, he could destroy some of these kids that are half his size. I’m thankful he has the respect instead of going out there to compete in “who can hit the hardest”. All in all, that game looked pretty clean with some missed penalties.

2:08 There is a great lesson for blue #33. Good effort being sharp to put pressure but you should not go just for the hit. Especially when you are a bit late and shorthanded. Give the pressure with stick and skating and do not play yourself out with unnecessary hit.

It just appears to be a lower level of skill where not all players have been taught the proper and safe way to deliver or receive a check. With more experienced referees, there would also be some call made if infractions warrant that! This is also an age group where some player's growth spurts leave them much bigger than others. Enjoy, and encourage good sportsmanship rather than competitiveness.
@hockeyfan Жыл бұрын
Well-though-out analysis! Thanks.
@jamilnes Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Low level house league players with poor coaching results in the inability to apply proper technique when giving and taking a hit. To make things worse, parents of less skilled players tend to not know much either and end up just yelling at junior referees every time their kid gets knocked to the ice.

That blue team is huge. Makes you wonder if it might be better at these age levels to sort out teams and leagues by size instead of purely by age. It's not good for the little ones to take the abuse, and it's not good for the skill development of the big ones to be able to rely purely on size and physical domination.
@OldGuy555 Жыл бұрын
Correct! Pubescent boys should be sorted by size and maturity, not age. In the 1950's and 60's, my grade school had tackle football in full equip,ent in a varsity that competed against other schools, at gym class from 4th through 8th grades, (kids who did not want to play tackle played touch) and after school intramural, which was divided into over 90 pounds and under 90 pounds, not by grade.
