I've spent time in both China and Africa, and their cooperation in recent decades has grabbed my interest. Recently there's been a lot of negativity written about the Chinese in Tanzania; they're there for "debt-trap diplomacy" and enforcing the will of the Chinese government. Was it true? I'm not sure if walking across the Nyerere bridge would answer that question, but it made for an interesting day while I waited for my new passport in Dar es Salaam.

Guys, my Tanzanian and (now also) Chinese friends, please read this first before repeating the same thing for the 50th time: This video is not attacking Tanzania. It's not even attacking China. I never said that the bridge was paid for with a loan. And this video certainly isn't "American propaganda", you won't find many American nationalists defending China or Tanzania in a video. If anything, it's playing on the public's perception of every Chinese project being a trap or a scheme, when in truth the African country has it's own role and motivations in it as well. Basically, I agree with you. So stop repeating the same comments over and over, if you do I'll delete it because it shows you didn't read this or watch the video. 下次见/baadaye

@@QualityCarp Singapore used to borrow money to build infrastructure in the past. Look what it has become today. China learned from Singapore and also borrowed money to build infrastructure. Look what it has become today. Infrastructure is one of the fundamentals to have in a city in order for it to prosper. Without infrastructure, you have nothing. As I've said, it's up to the people of Africa to put that infrastructure into good use in order to make a profit. Now US is trying to improve its basic infrastructure by borrowing money from future generations to fund their 1 Trillion dollar infrastructure bill. But I'm guessing that's not enough. Most of US cities are outdated and infrastructure is ageing.

The problem with the African infrastructures/constructions is not that there are too many debt, but actually, not enough being built. As a developing country want to improve and develop, they need shit tons of constructions, of course it would be better if the local or the government can do that themselves, but when you don't have the capacity/technology/funding, you are left with limited options, and to stay still waiting for donation is NOT one of them. The fact that China is being called debt-trap in Africa but China is not even the most debt holder in Africa speaks for itself. Are African countries in a debt trap? Maybe. Are they in a debt trap set by the Chinese? Absolutely not.

As a west African I like this video. It puts things in perspective regarding Chinese relationship with africa which the west likes to wrongly characterise as bad for Africa. The Chinese offer another alternative to Africa building infrastructures to the finish at lower cost than the IMF or world Bank or other western countries. What I have learned here is that this project while valuable in the long term serves less people traffic in the short term. However I am sure transfer of goods benefits from it essentially. Both the ferry and the bridge are a beauty to the Tanzanians on both sides of the river. While walkers prefer the bridge, non-walkers prefer the ferry especially of they carry small loads. What a choice? Beautiful 💘

Economist Y. Varoufakis speaks of these Sino-African infrastructure projects as, on balance, rather beneficent efforts by the Chinese to exercise Soft Power - unlike the traditional, heavy-handed colonial military interventions by the U.S. and Europe; no threats or strings attached for the much-needed bridges, ports, etc., but rather a hope that China will receive special consideration in the event that, say, oil is discovered in Africa, etc.

Nobody said the Tanzanians are corrupt as you are suggesting. The cost due to cheaper labour and time for construction is good for Tanzania that’s probably why China won the contract. It’s nice to hear you saying business is business even if it is a loan with interest. I hope Chinese people as always don’t assume that they are just helping a poor African country. So far China has proved to be a better business partner than most African countries have ever seen but the arrogance of Chinese and its treatment of African immigrants in China during the pandemic which didn’t start in Africa has been an eyesore.China’s economic plan and development is something any 3rd world without capital will like to emulate but the whatever treatment the Chinese may treat Africans will likely be reciprocated. I hope China and Africa see themselves as friends socially and economically because both have enough to gain from each other!

Fascinating to get a mzungs perspective who's lived in China! I saw the beginnings of the Chinese involvement in Africa way back in 1991, in Sudan. They've done lots of good things, I think the West is just jealous they weren't more pro-active. My issue, especially with the port, is it makes it damn easy to smuggle animal parts to China, this being the THIRD largest illegal trade in the world. BAD. Americans, always want the beer baridi. :P BTW, they take the ferry because most people don't own a car, and the ferry is cheap, cheap, cheap!

I'm old as dirt. I was in Tanzania in 1969 and housed on the Island of Unguja ( Zanzibar ) but spent most days on Pemba where I was installing weather radar equipment. I also trained some Natives along with British Nationals on operation. Very little English was spoken and Arabic was the main local language and of course some Swahili. The British Military and Civilian contract workers were all fluent Arabic speakers which was surprising to me. We ferried back and forth on WW2 surplus LCTs (landing crafts) that were huge and the 2 giant diesel engines that were loud and probably used 100 gallons of diesel a day.

China and Tanzania had a long history of friendship and mutual help dating all the way back to Mao era in the 1950s when China helped Tanzania to build a major railway. The support never stopped when during China's most difficult times. It is beileved that only when the third world countries really develop and become prosperous as a whole can the imperialism and colonialism be finally stopped and international order rewritten. The concept of debt trap only makes sense in the lens of colonialism and exploitation, but when the overall aim is to end international colonialism, and stop exploitation, you can see how laughable that notion becomes. The rise of the third world and helping them to become prosper is just as important to China strategically as her own prosperousness as only then can the international order can be truely rewritten, and mankind advance to a new level, and ensure a safe future for China on the long term.

It's been safer than my trip to Jo-burg in South Africa some years later. There is a reason why you could not bring beer and drink on the ferry and you have to agree with these rules. In no way this will discourage tourists. We should learn to follow the law of the land and it will bring respect to Westerners. However, apart from that, we understood the point. Is that bridge a remunerable structural long-term investment or a long-term burden? Time will say.
