.... No. In theory you get newer software you can run, but the reality is that most desktop software you'd want to use is either buggy, broken, or simply unavailable. I've spent a lot of time and effort into testing and using linux on my PowerMacs and it is always worse than Tiger or Leopard.

I have a 2012 Mac Pro 5,1, which have had from new, with a metal GPU, 64GB ram and a USB 3.0/3.1 card. With OCLP have Sonoma installed. Do a lot of graphic work, adjusting scanned photos and making large prints up to 44" wide via Gimp. This machine has plenty of power - and frankly - would be sufficient for the vast majority of users. And I can fix it myself, if needed. And the internal storage available is, basically, limited by only one's budget.

What's on my screen? Linix. I run Linux on my 2011 Mac Mini and 2015 MBP. They run perfectly nicely on all the stuff I use. I'm fortunate to also have 2 M1 Mac Minis as well. One is run exclusively as a macOS machine (Sonoma for now). The other mostly runs Asahi Linux. It's had Asahi's Arch Linux and Fedora 39. While I've run Linux on it, I had NO difficulty running macOS and even upgrading it from Ventura to Sonoma, I imagine it will update nicely to Sequoia when the fully-polished version come out in September-October. Anyway, the machine ran its normal Linux afte4r the macOS upgrades were done. A few weeks ago, the Asahi Linux people offered a self-installing upgrade to Fedora 40 and KDE Plasma 6.0 desktop. That all ran glitch-free. And the macOS part of the same Mac STILL ran perfectly any time I wanted it to. So... I'm prepared for when Apple stops updating the M1-chipped Macs.

It depends on the Mac model: my MacBookPro (late 2008) runs fine with Ventura (with OCLP) and Linux Mint (dual boot). A PowerPC G4 Mac from 2006 is barely usable with Ubuntu Mate (but at least it can open most web sites correctly).

Personally, my main machine is a 2012 15” Unibody MacBook Pro with the 2.6GHz i7. That latter bit might sound unimportant, but it means that I have double the VRAM as the base model. It’s unsupported by every current major OS (ignoring gigachad Linux), but with a little bit of technical wizardry, I can still run the latest versions of macOS and Windows on it. I can still play the games I like to play on it. It works as my main machine, despite its age.

My current laptop is really starting to show its age considering the unfortunate case i am missing an s and windows key and im starting to make a rather weird decision: I have an old unibody macbook pro 13inch on my shelf of "intellegent human engineering" that I would happily restore and keep my current one running as a desktop to connect to play games OR get a refurbished m1 pro since it has more usefull connectivity than the others in the last few years (i think) and maybe turn these two into art pieces as depicted in the video regardless, its a really good video man! cheers.

as a studio owner, my old laptops come in handy to simply use preview for pdf files of schematics of gear that needs repairing. i'm certainly not dragging a Hammond organ over to my desktop to repair it... the portability of the laptop saves me from the hassle. also, all my "vintage" midi gear can get simple sysex files dumped back and forth via the laptop and usb to midi interface. should these protocols stop working, i'll still figure out how to attach a handle and turn it into a hammer or dustpan...

I think the biggest issue with old machines is the power consumption. I respect the idea of having dedicated underpowered devices in order to procrastinate less (though it does not work on me...), but having a Mac Pro stove that consumes 50+ watts simply idling is just an enormous waste of resources (and money). Plus, non-Retina screens are shit, that's just a fact and it's not debatable. I would not go farther than 2012s Retina MBPs, or 2014 Retina iMacs. Anything older is literally an obsolete garbage that's painful for the eyes OR has too many compromises / stability issues

I have a 2012 15" MacBook Pro and I love it for editing video and still browsing the web! Surprisingly, with its architecture, 1 TB SSD, and 16GB ram, it's more responsive than my 2015 13" MBP with 3.1 GHz that has only 8GB non-upgradeable ram. In fact, I'm trying to replace this 2015, which is my daily driver, whose heating makes it uncomfortable to type on. Sadly, the 2012 has the same problem. So should I go with a top-of-the-line late 2019 MBP or an M1 if I don't want to deal with cooling problems?

As an iPod user, I’d say old Macs can be good base stations for iPods. I don’t personally have a truly unsupported Mac (My macs still get security updates), I know the older unsupported Macs have one thing that newer Macs don’t have: iTunes. MacOS since Catalina removed iTunes, and since then we can only organise our music libraries in Music and sync through files, which is really annoying. iTunes was pretty hated for those who don’t use iPods or who use PC, but it’s quite useful to us. Now I’ve heard since Ventura there’s been problems on syncing iPods with Macs, old Mac became even more valuable to us. Although there’s still a Windows version of iTunes, it SUCKS! You can’t even change the location of your library, every time you relaunch iTunes it rests back to the default C drive path. I just hate seeing too much space occupied in my C drive partition, my music library is now at 80GB and it keeps growing.

I've relegated my old 2008 mac pro to a video capture device. I've got an old VHS camera I use to film stuff and it has a firewire output. 2008 mac pros have firewire ports. Considering i'd need two adapters to do the same thing with my daily driver mac it's a much better option. It's still a fun project machine to fart about with as well.

2007/2008 macbook pro 15 is my fave macbook but sadly most of them die due to faulty gpus. I've gone through many. my last one died a few months back. I could get the gpu replaced with a revised one but there's no one in my area that does that kind of work.

Wow! You write in Latin! That's really something. Anyway, I use my '09 white Macbook for writing my novels, with an old version of MS Office. But I don't write in Latin. Great old machine, love it.

Just get an optical drive for your Mac I don't get what the want of having every port possible on one computer, especially with these ports are huge and take up so much space that you're much better off just taking he don't go whenever you want to use it I don't think I'll use an optical drive every single day so having a dongle is much more intuitive as it allows the computer to have more space for other things instead and it allows me to remove it as often. If you do not know, optical drives get damaged easily and overall get dirty inside. There's a bunch of issues I've experienced with these port as it's hardware and very mechanical. I'm much rather the repairability and interchangeability and removal of the dongle optical, which are pretty cheap, especially online

@@shade221 well, of course, it is still portable, even more portable than ever as you have more battery now than hardware and the hardware is easily implementable and interchangeable on who you are as an individual

@@shade221 Thunderbolt does the job as it allows you to customize the port the only awkward thing is the dongle can sometimes hang off but I still enjoy the flexibility it provides

@@anthonyjfynvmb5275 it's not really portable if you need a bunch of tumors attached to it to use it effectively. like, sure, okay, no optical drive, whatever, i'll live. but anything less than 4 USB A ports, a display output, ethernet, an SD card slot, and a headphone jack is inexcusable.
Why do people still buy Intel Macs in 2024? - Aren't Apple Silicon Macs better?
