Alex had quite the 24 hours after being released. He was rejected by his parents, beaten and mugged by a gang of old beggars, nearly drowned by Dim and Georgie, and finally drugged and driven to suicidal madness by the writer.

hall9111 That's part of the meaning of the film/book. Alex has done wrong and he really deserves to pay for it, however the way he has to pay is to give up his free will, which doesn't really make him a human being anymore but just a machine (hence 'clockwork orange'). He has nothing, no family, no friends, no home and not even the ability to do what he wants to anymore. He has nothing to live for anymore which eventually causes suicidal thoughts. To see anyone as miserable like that is more than enough to make the majority of the audience to feel bad for him and sympathize. He is real scum, but I personally can't help but feel bad reading/watching the last part of the story.
@hall9111

hall9111 It's the same reaction people have to serial killers when they show remorse. And it's why psychopaths know when to turn on the charm and hide their true nature on their victims. People weep for Bundy, Kuklinski & all the rest when they talk about their sad childhood and don't think twice about the fact that its in these peoples nature to manipulate before they kill.

jordanaug81 I know. Alex fits right into this category along with Dahmer and the rest. That's how the psychology of the psychopath works. That's also why I consider Burgess' writing, Kubrick's directing and Mcdowel's acting to be so clever.

good things are only good if they are useful or beneficial in someway, or another. suffering can only be considered a good thing if there is both a lesson to be learned from the suffering, as well as a foreseeable end to it. eternal suffering for the sake of some misguided, dopey notion of "justice" is a backwards and medieval belief and the reason why society is plagued by "institutionalized" and immoral criminals without any empathy of their own. it does no one any good, even the spiteful, to see the suffering of others because those cynical people will never be happy in their own lives even if every, single witch burns at the stake. get out of that mindset and run as fast as you can, or else YOU will always be miserable, not the ones you wish misery upon.

Some say it's a scene where Alex is faking it and this Joe is totally right. I disagree and feel sorry for Alex. The idea of suffering for one's sins makes sense if it gives the person something, when it has a chance to lead to change. At that point, this suffering becomes an unnecessary addition to the sum of suffering, it's a vicious circle. Joe in the book behaves disgustingly when Alex is clearly feeling bad, he even gets pissed off when Alex wants to simply drink something or sit down. Doing wrong to another person or allowing them to suffer when we can react and justifying oneself with justice and goodness is hypocritical. It sounds like a primitive desire to feel better at the expense of humiliating someone. There's no empathy here. I don't know, maybe I'm too sensitive a person, but if I was in Joe's situation, I would try to find a compromise, talk about the possibilities of proceeding in this situation. Anyway, Joe clearly does it because he benefits from it and manipulates Alex's parents. Alex was subjected to inhuman treatment at a young age, deprived of his free will, made his body react with pain and fear even to seemingly indifferent stimuli (like music), plus the fact that he can't defend himself makes throwing him out in such a state almost certain to do him harm, especially considering that this is an anti-utopian reality in which violence, gangs and demoralization are practically normal among youth. He is also raped in the book. It seems to me that judging this situation superficially, many people make a basic attribution error, ascribing to Alex more characteristics than his rather simple personality and ignoring the circumstances and conditions of the environment. His parents may have been afraid of him - but their upbringing was up to them, and even at the beginning of the film we see how ignorant and naive they are about their own son, as if they had trouble drawing conclusions themselves. When the boy clearly lies and says that he has had a headache for a week so he won't go to school, his mother (a neurotic person by the way) just believes him without any reflections and calmly goes to eat breakfast. Idk, take your son to the doctor, talk to him, make any kind of communication goddamnit. This whole family should participate in therapy. It's sad on many levels.

Quite a heartbreaking scene in my book, but you have to admit, Joe does have a reason. Once you have crossed the line into doing something unspeakable and beyond worse, that moment stays with you and whoever’s affected by it will leave a scar of them. Alex may be “cured” thanks to the program he has to endure through every session, but what doesn’t kept wiped clean is own mortal sins of actions from the past when he was with the Droogs. And now, we see why Alex starts to regain back his normal self during the hospital scene.

Joe has found himself comfortable as a tenant and exploits the situation to the full, with his cheap moralizing. Alex's parents were stupid and indifferent from the start, which could be the main reason he became a murderer and ended up in prison and the eventual "therapy" and its consequences. And they threw their returning and completely incapacitated, unable to even defend himself son out without hesitation, for the sake of the tenant stranger. If they were any good, they would at least help him find some temporary accomodation while Joe occupied his room. But they do not even try to suggest a solution. And the scene just ends with his poor excuse of a mother weeping and shedding crocodile tears.

Why is Joe the A-hole? Think of Alex´ character in the real world, would you have simpathy for him? Crime begins when you harm another person, and i mean to the terms that people suffer their whole life (I know what i´m talking about). Not to mention he is NOT reformed, he is programmed to suppress his feelings

@@pinkypie8322 Why do you think I used the word “arguably” For starters, Joe’s acting like he belongs there and not Alex. As ordeal as it may be, initially it’s Alex’s home. I’m not sympathizing with Alex in any way. You obviously didn’t read my comment. See, I know what I’m talking about.

MegaGoodoldtimes / Wormtail96 You guys are absolutely correct. I think everyone here is missing the point entirely. He wasn't reformed. He was treated to feel pain when he begins to get angered or frustrated. His face at the end, "I was cure my brothers, " only connotates that he's cured of the treatment. He's still a scumbag. I love this movie. There is NO good person in it.

Exactly thank you! People have to think of Alex´ as character in the real world and ask theirselfes if they still would have simpathy for him? Crime begins when you harm another person, and i mean to the terms that people suffer their whole life (I know what i´m talking about). And youre absolutly right, he is NOT reformed, he is programmed to suppress his feelings of Anger
