So you think you can train a Samoyed? Are you sure? They're absolutely adorable, but extremely stubborn and demanding dogs. We discuss Samoyed training techniques, to help with difficult Samoyed training. Yeti and I provide training tips, in an easy to understand training guide. That way, you and you Samoyed puppy, will be able to understand one another, in an easy, how to train manner. Sure, they're stubborn, but they can be taught.
Here's a video on what can happen, when your dog isn't trained and gets bored. Yikes!

Think your Samoyed is difficult to train? Poor Yeti went through more than a few dog training sessions, where the trainer told us, he is untrainable. So, Yeti and I worked really hard on puppy training, using the techniques I mention. Check out this video on stay, for greater details. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6qxl2p_e8x9gNk

Happy dog Mom day to you too, Janet! Yes, it is a lifetime endeavor. Each dog, communicates differently than the next. It took me years to understand what Yeti was saying to me. I understood Chewy, my first Sam, really quickly. Chewy was an only puppy (his littermates all passed, due to accident suffered during Chewy’s delivery). Yeti was one of 4 puppies, so got used to communicating with his brother and sisters. Yeti would look at me so quizzically, titling his head back and forth, trying to soak in everything I was saying. I was trying to understand his communication method. It took a long time and there’s still so much both of can learn. He would be great at agility.

I just got my Sammy on Sunday. Bobo is 6 1/2 months (born March 31st). He had never been walked before or inside a house before. He is doing a lot better in many ways. He almost doesn't pull on our walks now, until we head home. However, there are a couple of things that have freaked him out (yesterday, when the garbage trucks came, he not only refused to go on the walk, but dragged me to the furthest area, a fence between the houses, and I couldn't budge him). Today on his walk, everything was going well, until something freaked him out (I think it was a green garbage bag blowing high in the wind, it could have been for Hallow'een), and he started to strongly pull me in the other direction. He practically galloped, with his two front feet leaping out at a time. I tried altering the route, and that went okay for a bit, until again, he started strongly pulling me in the other direction. I have a good halter on him. I am worried that when I try to use force and grab the halter, so that he isn't telling me what to do or where to go, that I might anger him or upset him. Could you please advise on this? Is it a terrible idea to force a Sammy to go where you want him to go?
@YetisPlace
@YetisPlace Жыл бұрын
Sandy, you are his pack leader. Bring treats, to encourage him to go the way you want to go. Sammies are extremely powerful dogs. Yeti had torn my rotator cuff, because he didn’t want to go where I wanted to go. I didn’t have treats that time. Bring high value treats that he adores and will do anything for. If he doesn’t care for treats, bring his favorite toy, or some chicken deli meat. When he sees something he’s scared of, distract him by getting him to pay attention to you. Use the treats or his toy. When he pays attention to you, immediately praise.
@sandyr4279
@sandyr4279 Жыл бұрын
@@YetisPlace Thank you! Yes, he loves his treats, especially the bacon-cheese one. However, if he is really determined, then even that doesn't seem to help. He, for instance, likes to go to the backyard, which faces a river, in the middle of the night: 3am. I have been taking him out there, in case he has to pee. But then, it is next to impossible to get him to go back inside with me. Yes, his leash is on, and I bring treats. Sometimes, I just stand there and wait while he stares out at the river beyond our yard. But man, when I try to get him to come back inside... Last night, I even picked him up to go up the back porch stairs, but he is heavy!

Oh goodness, Kassandra garza! The wait is the most difficult part. I was able to meet Yeti, when he was only 5 weeks old. He was SOOOO tiny. We didn’t know which little boy would be our’s. They had nail polish on different parts of their fur, to make out who was who. I held a little boy, who had nail polish on his lower back, right below where his tail hit. He cuddled so tightly with me and looked me in the eye. When we got our little boy, Yeti, when he was 8 weeks old, he was the little boy I had held. Yeti and I have had a tight bond since the moment we first met. He’s my little fuzzy buddy. Hopefully, you can meet the puppies when they’re around 5 weeks old. Some breeders allow that, others may not. If you are allowed, bring a camera and take a lot of pics. Once you get him, he’ll be SOOOO much bigger.

With Sammies, there’s an awful lot more to know, that just a cute face and mega fluffiness. There’s the endless vacuuming, cleanup, grooming, maintenance. They need to be walked for many miles, multiple times daily. They’re bred to work and they need that work, to expend some of that energy. If they aren’t walked, played with a bunch, allowed to work, they become destructive. The reason Yeti is always so sleepy and well behaved, is because we film toward the end of the day, after he’s been walked many miles and played with bunches. They’re demanding dogs, who are very schedule oriented. Not good dogs, for first time owners, due to their high maintenance and energy demands. They hold that energy, throughout their entire lives.

Imagine if you were taken from your Mom at a young age and moved to a new house, with new people, no brothers and sisters, no puppy parents. I’m sure you would be terrified too. That’s why he’s crying and is scared. Be encouraging and gentle. Work on earning his trust and love. It takes a bit of time, but eventually, he’ll understand that your home is a special place for him. Samoyeds are extremely stubborn. Training at this point in time, needs to be working on trust. Play with him, be there, cuddle. Give treats when he does the right thing. In 2 weeks, see where he is and then, slowly, start working on training, always making it a fun game he gets to play.

Yeti’s Place thank you! I misspoke though , he is comfortable , he has a dog brother that’s a Britney so they both chase birds together and he cuddles with me and the family, and he comes to us. He’s definitely not fully comfortable but he’s really good so far , what I meant was when I put him in his crate or if I go to another room he cries and throws a fit (even if I have my parents watch him) I’m wondering if I should let him cry or pout so he can be independent or do I be by his every move to make him comfortable? Because I just graduated School so I can train him and spend time with him all day for a couple months , but eventually I’m gonna have to go to work in the fall (part time) and let my parents take care of him when I’m Gone for a couple hours . I saw yeti doesn’t like when u guys leave either , what would you do in this situation. Because I want him to be independent enough we’re he can let my parents watch him or he can be in his crate for a hour or two . So please please let me know or guide me to some books or videos because I’m very dedicated to him and I don’t want him to be dependent on me.

Sammies are really attached to their owners. When we leave Yeti, he gets upset, just because he wants to be with us. Shortly after we leave, he settles into a routine of pouting and napping. He’s really excited when we return. Watch our crate training video. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZObnZuhm5iGgpY It’s best to practice slow, gradual steps, so they think of the crate as their home. Allow him to cry. I know, it’s painful, but he has to get used to being in there when you’re not around. Otherwise, he’ll get into things that could hurt him, like electrical cords, outlets, plants, etc. Yes, he will throw fits, because he doesn’t want a time out. He wants to keep playing. It helps if you play, bring him outside for a quick walk, then put in the crate. His energy will be worn down and he’ll be able to settle. Practice all the skills I talk about. Now that Yeti’s been free of his crate for a few years, when his buddies, Quimby and Bigby come over, if we need peace and quiet, (they just don’t quit) we‘ve tried putting him in the crate. He doesn’t like it and sticks all 4 paws out to repel. We cannot get him in his crate anymore. Yeti sometimes wants peace and quiet from Quimby, so he’ll wander into the bathroom, to escape. But, when Yeti was young, he got used to being in the crate, after a lot of coaxing and practice. The first few weeks, though, are tough. When they’re good, give praise and treats.
@YetisPlace

Sammies shed a lot, due to the long, thick coat. It’s really long. All dogs shed, some more than others. Even dogs with short coats shed a lot, leaving fur all over the house. Poodles don’t shed too much. Standard poodles are larger dogs, who enjoy all kinds of activity. Portuguese Water Dogs (President Obama - USA president, had 2 of them), don’t shed too much, are hypoallergenic, like poodles and they love vigorous activity with an owner. Unfortunately, what makes a Samoyed so beautiful, makes them shed. Their coats are very long. There isn't another breed of dog that looks like a Sam, that doesn't shed like a Sam. You've been looking at the right breeds that don't shed. But, I understand they aren't the same. Sammies are a beautiful, high grooming dog. You have to weigh the pros and cons.

Do you have a video on indoor games to play with a Samoyed? Bobo learned how to sit in like 3 minutes. Today, he has mastered 'shake a paw' (that one took more practise). And I play the walnut game with him, where I hide a treat in one of 3 containers, and he uses his nose to sniff out where it might be. But I would like a whole variety of games I can play with him. So far, he doesn't get 'fetch' (or doesn't want to), when I throw one of his balls or his cylindrical chew toy. Any other ideas?

I don't have a video like that yet, but it's a great idea for us to do one! Here's a book that helped me with great training tips, designed for our tricky to train dogs.It's called 'When Pigs Fly: Training With Impossible Dogs." amzn.to/3F36Akn A game my sister would play with our American Eskimo when we were growing up, was hide and go seek. She'd grab a treat and go hide somewhere in the house. She'd call his name and he' would run around the house, looking for her. When he found her, she'd give him the treat. He went nuts over that game. She also trained him to come wake her up in the morning. She'd put a dog treat under her pillow. When he'd come wake her up, he'd jump up onto her bed, kiss her, nose her pillow. She'd peel back her pillow, revealing the treat.

My friend was telling me to get an eskimo instead, for they look like mini sammies, but without that killer smile and are easy to train and perfect for condo living. Where as the sammies might be hands down the most beautiful dogs on earth but sadly not made for apartment living for they bark a lot, are a nightmare to train and you cannot keep them off leash. Is that all true and have you ever done a comparison of the two breeds. I would also be a first time dog owner retiring in 5 months, working out of home.
@YetisPlace
@YetisPlace 2 жыл бұрын
I owned an American Eskimo while I grew up. Completely different personalities. They are easier dogs to train, having been used as circus dogs. They’re good dogs for one person, as their bond is very strong with that one person. They tolerate the others somewhat, but can get mad at other people. When visitors come over, they must be put in a crate until after your guests settle down. American Eskimos are vocal guard dogs. That’s why the crate comes in handy. My American Eskimo would be placed in his crate when friends and visitors were at the door. He would come out once they were settled and once he calmed down. He listened when we told him go to bed. I did a comparison video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2PUeGSZfL-VppI They’re better for first time owners, because they listen and don’t become destructive when bored. Sammies need a lot of exercise, due to being bred to pull heavy sleds and herd reindeer. Sammies aren’t good for first time owners because they listen in different ways. When training, you need to use multiple techniques. They’re extremely smart, stubborn; which can drive an owner nuts. When they do something wrong and are told NO, they learn different ways of doing that bad thing, to see if they can get away with it. Yes, Sammies bark because they love talking. They like telling you about their day, what they chased, Mom give me treats, Mom bring me outside, Mom play fetch.

@@YetisPlace Thank you so much for getting back to me. I don't mind a velcro dog for my friend has a cavalier KC which I adore but to know that the eskimo's are not good with company basically is a no go for in normal times I love to entertain a lot. He suggested that I seriously look around for an older puppy/ adult sammie who is potty trained, has learned the basics and hopefully more as to avoid being overwhelmed from the get go. If I do decide who is clingier and easier to train in general, the male or female sammies for I know that with the cavalier KC breed it is the males. Would you also disagree in doing so since the sammies in general from what I understood are forever puppies. What I am also afraid of with his suggestion is that I might also end up with a dog with a severe case of separation anxiety of its past owner. I am strictly asking as a first time dog owner who is interested in the samoyed breed and in no way am I implying not to adopt an older sammie in need of a home if you are an experienced dog owner. I guess that I have the new- daddy fears who only wants to make an educated decision. Thanks again!

Many times, breeders may have an older Sam to sell. That Sam would be beyond the age of breeding, or could be finished in the dog show ring. I would recommend you go to the website SamoyedClubOfAmerica.org. Along the upper left hand side of the screen, click the 3 lines and go to breeders. It lists breeders throughout the USA and worldwide. They are all reputable breeders, whose aim is to keep Sams true to the original breed. It lists contact info for breeders. My uncle owned a few older Sams, who completed their breeding and showing phases. They would be potty trained, but they would be talkative. Sams are among the most expressive breeds, using different tones of voice, oftentimes talking to you, using easy to understand tones. I understood everything my first Sam would say to me. An older Sam would be beyond the destructive phase….well, Quimby is 12 and still eats his house when he’s bored. Quimby and Bigby are owned by family members. Both Sams. I’m dogsitting both right now. When a Sam gets bored, they become destructive. Rule of thumb…don’t let them get bored. Sams love everyone. They don’t bark until after the guest or you is in the house. They bark because they’re excited and want to tell you everything they did that day. There’s not a single mean bone in their bodies. They love everyone and want to be everyone’s best buddy. Sammies are difficult to train. They train their humans.

I’m dogsitting Quimby and Bigby, who have never spent a day apart, they love being with me. However, I work from home. Quimby never stops talking, except when he sleeps. Bigby, is a silent Sam (very unusable for a Sam). My husband brings Quimby with him during the day, to give me peace and quiet while working. Quimby and Yeti go to a house located near my husband’s workplace. I’m home with Bigby, who’s quiet. Because Quimby and Bigby have never been apart, except for this week, Quimby is very nervous and scared. He misses being with Bigby. He doesn’t know the house he goes to. Yeti is used to going there, so he’s fine. But poor Quimby. He follows my husband around, glued to his side, crying to go to work with my husband. My aunt and uncle have owned older Sams, who were beyond showing and breeding. One of them was my first Sammy’s Mom. She recognized my Chewy by smell and loved seeing him. She was very sweet, calm and relaxed. Loved being with my aunt and uncle. They gave her a very good life.

I want to take my Sammy pup to puppy training -- but I don't want to have the experience you did, where they told you Yeti was untrainable! What should I look for? Should I ask if they have any experience with Samoyeds before I consider the puppy classes?

The ‘untrainable’ was for conformation (dog show) training. I wasn’t told that for his normal puppy training.

He did well in puppy training. He was seriously bored and didn’t want to listen too much, due to being bored. They didn’t let him play before puppy class. They saved the playtime for after the puppy class, which doesn’t work well for working dogs. They need to spend some energy first, to have fuller focus during the course.

Remember that a Sam is a working dog. They love doing things that are multiple steps. They get bored if anything has to be focused on one boring thing, like learning sit, stay, come, down, etc. Therefore, bring them on a long walk (which you should be doing multiple times a day), play fetch, tug o war first.

I’ve had dogs since I was 2. I understand how to work with them. Yeti is the second Samoyed I’ve personally owned. Sammies are difficult to train. It helps if you’ve owned a dog before I. Their training requires going above and beyond traditional training techniques, due to their extreme intelligence, drive and stubbornness. They’re so much more than a pretty face. They become velociraptors between 4 months and 2 years, unless you fully understand how to work with them. Even then, they can be a challenge.

@YetisPlace
@YetisPlace Ай бұрын
Your puppy is much too young at 5 weeks. In the USA, puppies aren’t allowed to go home with their owners until 8-12 weeks of age. At 5 weeks old, they’re still much too young. A Samoyed takes a long time to potty train, a long time to train. I’m talking months. You need to think in a Samoyed’s manner of thinking in training. Don’t train them the way humans expect them to be trained. Sammies were bred to be reindeer herders and heavy sled pullers. They’re independent, very intelligent dogs, who don’t want to listen to human commands. You would not want to train him in sled pulling, nor reindeer herding until he’s 2. His bones continue to grow and continue to fuse together until they’re 2 years old. Start by training him his name. Work on very simple commands. Your puppy is dangerously too young to be separated from his mother. Give him time and expect your training to take a number of months to potty train, and to train other commands.

I meant bacon that humans eat (pig bacon). That comment, was lost in translation. In the United States, they have Beggin’ Strips, for dogs. Looks like bacon, but it is not pork bacon. Samoyeds are among the world’s smartest breeds. Just because they don’t want to listen to you, doesn’t mean they’re dumb. It means the complete opposite, FapKing69. They’re bored with being trained tricks and the cute things we want to them do. They’re bred to work, not sit, stay, bring me stuff. They don’t need to be trained to do what they’re bred to do, which is work. Hauling, pulling. They do that exceptionally well. A Samoyed, is more intelligent than any other breed of dog. Just because he cannot be easily trained to do what we want them to do, doesn’t make them stupid. It elevates their intelligence.
