So you want to be a neurosurgeon. Neurological surgery, or neurosurgery for short, is concerned with surgical interventions of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. To become a neurosurgeon, you must complete a 7-year neurosurgery residency program after medical school which often includes one year of dedicated research time. This is the longest residency program, start to finish, out of any specialty.
In terms of competitiveness, neurosurgery is consistently ranked among the top 5 most competitive specialties to match into, meaning you’ll need high Step scores and plenty of research.
The median salary for neurosurgeons is $680,000 per year making it consistently one of the top three highest-paid specialties, duking it out with orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery for the number 1 spot.
That being said, neurosurgery is known for having one of the most challenging lifestyles of any specialty, even beyond residency. In addition, the patients you treat as a neurosurgeon are often very sick, meaning that poor outcomes are not uncommon.
If you can get past those aspects of neurosurgery, however, you’ll get the privilege of working on arguably the most fascinating and mysterious organ of the body-the brain-and get to work in one of the few specialties where you truly have the opportunity to save someone’s life.

Still it isnt that bad. Im in med school in Poland. 6 years of med school after high school, 1 year of intership and then 5 years ( usually it takes 8-10 ) of neurosurgery residency working 70-80 hours a week. But then you do not earn 680K usd but usually up to 10K PLN before tax a month, after taxes its like 1500-1800 usd a month for most people, if you're very, very good you can maybe manage to earn 3,5-4K usd but its top 5% of doctors. And yeah, cost of living here is similar to Germany that has 3-4x bigger wages ( after tax )

it's true that in the United States medical school lasts "only" 4 years compared to European countries but in the United States to enter medical school you must first obtain a 4-year college degree. You aren't unable to enter medical school directly after high school as it's in Europe. In the US it works like this; High school - 4 years of college and you have to obtain all the prerequisites to enter med school and then you can do the 4 years of medical school. You cannot enter medical school if you haven't obtained a college degree before, there are only a few direct programs in US immediately after High school but if you choose this path and you want to skip the 4 years of college some schools (few actually) offer direct medical program after high school but still lasts from 6 to 7 years (depending on the institution) instead of the common 4 years.
@liv0003
@liv0003 Жыл бұрын
And you have to keep in mind that in the United States, both college and medical school are very expensive. If you don't come from a rich family and your parents don't pay for it, students usually run into student loans which they have to pay off later, on average student debt for med school is between $ 200.000 / $ 500.000 and you still have to pay this money back. Then the salaries here in the video are reported before taxes so a bit less than about half of the annual salary you see mentioned here goes to taxes. And anyway the salary reported here is the salary of neurosurgeons who have finished their residency training. During the 7 years of residency in Neurosurgery the salary is 60 / 80k ( before taxes) per year and you work regularly from 80 to 100 hours per week

@@MadCuzUBroke This makes no sense. There is a minority in medicine who are very competent highly talented very bright specialists whose primary motivation for getting into medicine was high compensation and a high level security who have gravitated to higher paying medical specialties. This does not detract from a very high level of skill and expertise.. When a neurosurgeon is in the O.R. removing a difficult to remove brain tumor, he is not thinking about compensation. even if that was the primary reason for choosing neurosurgery as a specialty.
