I was 15 in 1984 and i didnt know anything about VWs. Well i lived down the road from a junk yard. A old man ran it. I got to know him real well. So i was telling him i wanted to get a muscle car so i could make it fast. He laughed at me and said. U want to beat everyone from light to light right? I was hell yes. So he said then u need a bug. Then i laughed at him. He said laugh all u want, i can build a VWs rhat will smoke most V8s. So i worked for that old man for over a year. And we started to build me this fast VW that i THOUGHT was going to be a wastiof my money and time. This old man had a case,crank and heads he let me have. The heads he match to the intake he also had. He told to to buy 44mm Weber carbs that he rejeted. He also built me the trans with 3rd and 4th gears shortened. First time i heard that motor run my heart started to race. But the old man wouldnt let me drive it crazy. He told me i had to break it in. I had to leave it with him tell i broke it in. Finally he tells me i could rod the shit out of it. So i started and let it warm up for 10 mins. He got in and said. Lets see what she can do. So i pulled out of the junk yard. Came to a stop in the middle of the road. Revved it up to 4000 RPMs like he told me to and dropped the clutch. All i could to was say OMG and smile. That old man was right. Not many cars could beat me. And if they did, it wasnt by much. Then i moved from socal to Missouri. And knowone knew about VWs in 1990. First race i had in Missouri was with a 5.0 mustang. He pulled beside me at a light. And started to laugh at my dad and i. So my dad goes. U want to runnum. Kids laughs again. So the light turns green and the boy wouldnt even come to the next light i smoked hes hass so bad. I love VWs!!!! Lol

Great story!!!! I'm building a 70 rat right now. I just picked up a 2300 (I think that's a 2335???) for it. It's gonna be fun to have the same experiences like you had!!! Gonna go freeway flyer as well. She's' slammed to 2 inches front with low pro's. Rear is stock height with 33's. Chopped 7in windshield with top removed. Door poppers.....you know, a RAT! Then the 70 ghia......The boss, I mean wife said to keep it original. Yeah Yeah Yeah...She'll appreciate the 1776 power and not even know the difference when that resto is completed!!! This isn't even mentioning my 67 original, one owner (before me) original paint (patina) radio, Dealer AC, etc...... KEEP BUGGIN'

I wanted a Beetle since I was 13. I finally got one when I was 52 3 years ago... I am too old to let this beauty sit in a garage and look at it once in a while. I drive my little car 3 seasons out of the year! I will drive it until I physically can't anymore. Painting the headliner which was merely discolored after 44 years was a choice not a necessity. It is unrestored and lovely. I adore it... always will.

Bravo! I just bought a 2012 second generation new Beetle which pays more homage to the type 1 and super Beetles. I am almost 70 and have always wanted one, i live in the snow (in Canada) so it will be a 3 season. I would have loved to have had a type 1 or a super Beetle but for a couple of reasons i have to do the more practical choice but i come here to still look at these.

Just so you know, those crescent shaped vents behind each side rear window are NOT engine ventilation vents. They actually feed air into the back of the vehicle's interior and over the rear window to help prevent condensation forming on the glass. The interior vents are located either side of the rear window.

The moon vents are for cabin ventilation, not for the engine. The reason that area rusts is the factory put foam in there that holds moisture. fyi

To clarify, the 1/4 moon vents behind the rear side windows were for cabin air outflow (door seals were very tight back then). I owned 5 vws 1st 1 I bought new in Dec '72 a '73 standard beetle painted kassian red, same as video.

Two other places for rust come to mind, the rockers behind the running boards, AND above the headlights. As you mention, there are new panels available to replace those areas - But if you can avoid it in the first place, so much the better.

A bug is as reliable as you make it. If you get one and don't do all the maintenance or replace aging parts, it's going to do nothing but break down. If you have a good engine, adjust the valves every 6k miles, adjust the brakes, grease the front end, grease the transaxle, make sure the transaxle boots are good, they'll be pretty damn reliable and have a ton of personality. One big thing though: replace exhaust valves at 50k miles. After 50k miles, they'll eventually snap off, scar a cylinder and destroy a piston!! The bug has its faults. You either love em or hate em.

I never had any problem with valves on the VW's I owned, and they were mostly high mileage engines. I did keep them adjusted and change the oil regularly. The biggest problem I had with high mileage VW engines was oil leakage and main bearing slop. The main oil leak points in old VW engines were the oil cooler seals, which was fixable, and the front main seal (front of the car, flywheel end of the engine). The main seal leakage was often caused by endplay in the main bearings, which could only be fixed with a complete teardown and rebuild of the engine. Eventually, the leakage would get so bad you just couldn't keep oil in them.

03:10 Those vents are for the flow thru ventilation for the interior of the car. They are linked to the 3 plastic slots on either side of the rear window on the inside of the car. They have no function associated with the cooling system of the engine.

Good video. My only comment would be on size for tall people. I have owned both standard and super beetles together for 30 years and driven them all over the country...trips like 800-1000 miles each. I am also 6'2" and weigh 200lbs. I've never felt cramped at all in the front seats.

One of the first cars I remember as a tot was our black '60 Beetle with a cloth sunroof that my parents bought used at Springer's Ford near Chanute AFB in Illinois (where Dad was stationed at the time). They have a picture of me sticking my finger up the exhaust.😊 It was later traded for a new light blue '67 Beetle. It was sold 4 years later. Much later when I was in 6th Grade Dad bought another light blue '67. When he got me home from school, he took me for a ride. He knew what I liked so he shut off the radio so I could hear the engine. Riding brought back the memories. Of the interior smell, the VW smell, and the engine sound, and the transmission sound in each gear just like the prior '67. All good things come to an end though, because a year later, my parents bought a new Ford Pinto with modern heat and a/c. Dad made some body repairs to the Bug, had it professionally painted, then sold it to our neighbors across the street. Our neighbor's wife didn't care for it so it was later traded for a new LTD II.

Bought a new standard beetle in 74...last year before the terrible fuel injection. With FM radio and floor mats it was $2300. Kept it a few years and not 1 iota of trouble. Keep the oil clean and valves adjusted and they last a long time. I had older beetles before this one and learned always to carry a spare accelerator cable.

My 1974 VW bug is a standard with a flat front windshield. It has torsion bar front end. You always want a throttle cable, clutch cable in the car with you at all times.

Bigguss D That's so true, I arrived home the day I bought my 67 Bug, in the front seat of a tow truck because the accelerator cable snapped an hour or so after purchase. The next time it happened, I spun the choke mechanism upside down and locked the accelerator into about a 3 quarter compressed position and rode the clutch the two miles or so to a garage, revving insanely when I shifted. Ah, good times.

Its a money pit for sure, but I love it. When my regular car was rear ended and was in the shop for a month, I pulled out my old '78 and it did the job just fine as my daily driver.

I'm pretty sure that the added width is only when measured from the outside of the fenders, which were widened slightly to accommodate the McPherson strut suspension and wider tires. And the added length is due to the shape of the hood, again due to the revised front suspension. The width of the interior is identical to a standard beetle. The volume of the trunk is increase because the McPherson strut suspension allows the spare tire to be placed in a well between the struts. (The standard beetle's torsion bar suspension required that the tire be stored virtically.)

I'm German and it's no problem here to find any part for. Cheap and available everywhere. The 1302 (made from 1970-1972) is alike, except of dashboard, windshield and frunk hood. Most parts fit from other bugs as well. This bug was made in Germany only from 1972-1975, but never in Brazil or Mexico. Due to our shitty weather an salty roads, eventually rust killed them all. Guess you'll find more of them in Nevada, Arizona & New Mexico now.

have a 74 super beetle .. the most comon problem is the Contact points replace them with electronic ones ..and if you have a stretch change the push rods into chromoly and upgrade the oil cooler and your bettle will ran just like a moderncar

I've found a good one last year for $2k (the one on my profile pic) and it has been our toy, for me and my 2 boys. It's just a fun car to drive, it gets comments and start conversations everywhere you go, and it's super cheap to maintain. I wouldn't recommend it as your main car or daily driver, for many practical reasons. But, for a fun and affordable running-car-project, you can't beat the little bug.

Other rust points are the lower part of the rear quarter panel behind the doors. The fender attachment point on the body, and door hinges. I learned to drive on the farm in my dad's '61. I had a hotrodded Super in grad school. Cal look (slightly lowered, one piece door windows, fully dechromed, Empi wheels, turn signals in bumper) and a built dual carb motor. Got rear ended by a semi (lucky I didn't die) which trashed the car. I'd love to have a nice west coast one just to putt around on the weekends, but really nice ones have gotten expensive. And then I'd have to build a garage. My daily is a modded '12 Sportwagon, so I'm a VW fan.(GTI suspension and brakes, IE Stage One tune, chassis bracing and high performance tires) Also, If one were to get an old Beetle, I'd convert to disk brakes at least in the front. There are kits. Car is enough of a death trap as it is without crappy drum brakes.

I have to correct you on the MacPherson front ends on super beetles. They were very problematic when they were introduced to the beetle. The steering boxes would wear out quickly not to mention unstable at higher speeds. My mom had a 72 or 73 SB and it always had front end problems from day one from 72 to 2005 long time on the road lol. I had 4 early beetles with good ol torsion bars and never had the issues the sb had hell I even had a few slammed and could do around 75mph and be stable.

I really didn't have any problems with mine, its rides great. I've had this up to 90 mph and didn't have shacks or become unstable. Now i did rebuilt the front end when i got the car, it was 30 years old at the time, and was worn out. Since then i've put 40,000 to 50,000 miles on it and never had any suspension problems

Torsion bar beetles thrive on neglect, Super beetles ride much nicer than torsion bar beetles when they are looked after, but when you abuse and neglect you get problems a lot quicker.

kyungi1 your absolutely right about the steering. Mine is wearing out and troublesome at high speeds. If you want a beetle with an older steering column assembly (which is easier to repair) you have to get a 69 or earlier. My choice of years is a 69.

I had a 71 SB. The front suspension had to be well maintained and parts replaced a bit more frequently than most cars. If it was well maintained and in good shape though it handled extremely well.

I have this same car! It's wonderful, best bug I have ever driven! And the price difference for parts is negligible. Except for the steering box, on a super that's your killer part. I have had both standard bugs and supers. And my 73 super is the most reliable car I have ever had.

71 and 72 also have a flat dash, just like the regular beetle. Also, regular beetle parts fit a super beetle from the fire wall back to the motor. The only difference between a super and a regular are from the fire wall forward

I think those crescent vents at the back are there to defrost the back window, not cool the engine. they are sealed off from the engine bay.

You missed a few things with the body rust, though the bath tray is a huge one. Under the running boards where the board meets the wheel jack point. Also, where the front fender meets the ody at the rear bottom, and in the back, the opposite side, front lower, close to the jack point. Doing away with the point/condenser. Great move. I carried spare points and condenser for a while. Adjusting the valves at valve cover gasket replacement, or at oil changes, is great advice. Also, if a vert, the entire running board area. You may want to add that after 74, everything US models, were fuel injected and all super beattles. I've had four VWs. Two type 1, and two type 2, buses. All pre 68. Great gideo.

I've had a few, and here in the northeast they rust all over. One of the, the seam between the pan and body inside the from wheel wells, and water would get in the cabin driving in the rain. Two of them leaked gas because the bottom of the gas tank rusted a tiny hole, had to get that welded.

One reason there are so few of the 21 million around is that they were stamped out very thin high carbon steel; that was light a strong but rusts away very fast compared to heavy sheet metal found in domestic car of the time.

The super beetle was introduced in 1970, My 70 convertible had the flat windshield. I think if you check the windsheild and the front suspension are the primary differences. THEY DID NOT CHANGE THE SIZE OR SHAPE OFF THE MAIN BODY. 71 was also when the vents were added for cabin ventilation. They continued to market the regular beetle for a few more years. Personally I didn't like the attempt at a dashboard. I liked the flat window flat dash.

Yes, a 1302 is the flat windshield Super Beetle and the 1303 is the curved windshield Super Beetle. SB parts are NOT twice as expensive as standard Beetle parts, fyi. (Who ever thought of that?). There is no battery tray ... it is the floor underneath the rear bench seat on the right side.

The super beetle really pays off. The most important change to normal ones is that he has the rear axle of the Porsche 911 from the late sixties. The same rear axle was also later used in the Porsche 944 Turbo with 220hp. So you can guess that, with the right tires, the super beetle grips extremely good and is very fast around corners. (modern fwd cars cant make turns like this) All other beetles have the ancient rear axle which was designed in 1938. This one doesnt grip very good and tends to oversteer very uncontrolled.

Bolleka .. Not completely true. The standard bug started using the later type trans in 68 with the auto-stick and in 69 with ALL type 1 vehicles. I believe the type 2 and type 3 did the same, also starting in 68. The CV joint style driveline made quite a difference in handling because there was no "tuck-under" of the wheels on hard turns. With this new system you could remove the trans for repairs without disassembly of the suspension. I have no idea why they went back to the early style swing-axle for the Mexican and Brazilian bugs, other than maybe cost cutting.

@@rupe53 the mexican and brazillian beetles kept the swingaxle because that's what the factories were set up to make. those factories also kept producing the split window bus into the 1980's for the same reason. the main difference between a standard beetle and a super beetle is the front suspension. super beetles use a mcpherson strut system similar to all modern front wheel drive vehicles which gives a smoother ride than the old trailing arm torsion bar suspension on the standard beetles. also, later super beetles had the bubble windshield and bubble dashboard.

I have heard that before, but it doesn't add up that they would keep the rear suspension / trans and switch to a new style front suspension which is not as sturdy as the old torsion bar unit... especially in a country full of bad roads. This also means they need many hybrid parts, as all of the mounting points are different between those suspension types.

Okay I saw what you were talking about the distributor replace all that great job but they do have an adapter kit for the original old school just sugar is called in a nighter I've used it and it always works for me after I upgraded I love your video

It won't break down if you maintain it properly. It might need more regular attention than the most basic Mk 1 Golf..... Change worn out parts (they're cheaper than a Golf) and make sure you change the oil like you change your underpants!!!

I believe the Super Beetle with the flat screen is the 1302 while this is a 1303.

The only difference from a beetle and a super beetle is the improved suspension and the bigger boot. Easiest way to check is if the spare tire lies flat. If it lies flat it's a super beetle, if it's vertical it's a regular beetle. The point you made with the curved windshield and the "real" dashboard is from the '73-models and beyond, ergo 1303 series. You have super beetles that are earlier models, like the 1302S, which have a flat windshield and a "flat" dashboard.

The clutch cable and accelerator cable are a bitch to replace. Spark plugs can be even worse to access. I made a special spark plug tool to do this.

I had a 78 brazilian bug about 20 years ago. Can't remember how many times that car let me down on the side of the road. That car hated me. I'd love to have a super beetle with the curved windshield, it looks much more comfortable to drive.

panchoskywalker I had a 71 super beetle and problems with it from day one. I also had a 74 super beetle that would always overheat and brake down. Heck when I was driving the motor stopped.. I had to push it in the middle of a highway. I prefer my 63 and 73 beetle.
