Showing your vest’s pockets and what’s in them and telling us what an engineer does are two completely different things.

The part of the title "Let's take a field office tour" was my tricky way of saying what is in my vest! Now if you would like to know more about the challenges that I have to deal with on a daily basis let me know and I can bore everyone to death! Please check out the video entitled "The Beam Does Not Fit" for a very realistic situation, and yes, it is a cartoon. ENJOY!

I’ll bet you’re real popular with the Ironworkers...
@DanSarahMakers5 жыл бұрын
Actually, I get along with them really well. When you spot the first fill beam go in backwards because of the chase tab on the side of the web, they will spin it around no problem. When they have 5 beams on the hook, all five can be hung before the mistake is discovered! Then they have to re-rig them, pull them, and re-install. With the crane costing $500-$600 and hour with operator and oiler, plus the ground crew shaking out iron and rigging the trees and the hanging crew on the iron, it adds up.

Just curious I'm going to graduate with a degree in Information Systems in which I also had to take classes in accounting, finance, and law. Is there a way for me to work in this field besides getting another degree?
@DanSarahMakers2 жыл бұрын
Good question. There are a couple of directions that I would try but it would take some work on your side, but no where as much as getting a CM degree! 1. A lot of the larger construction companies have their own deticated internet/data systems along with PR departments to manage all of the programs, documentation, and security systems for the company themselves. You could use that as an oppoturnity to get your foot in the door and possabilly transfer into the CM side of things. I worked for Hensel Phelps and they were open to people moving around into areas that differed from their degrees and backrounds. We had people that had safety and health degrees in Superintendant positions, Architects and Business degree holders with no backround in construction also in field positions. We also recurited straight from the military and trained on the job. 2. There are electrical and telcom contractors that also may have openings in the field managment side of things. Almost all new projects have a lot of network hardware and systems intregrated into them. It seems like everything including light switches now have CAT6 run to them. Do a Google search for companies that spark some intrest, go to their web sites and see if there are online applications that you can start with. If your school or one nearby has a Construction Managment program, poke around to see if and when they have a career fair that you could attend. The school I attended only had about 80 students in the CM program at any one time (so not very big) but the career fair had about 100+ companies recuriting. Chances were very good to get an internship or a job offer. Almost everyone had a job before they completed their degree. Good luck, Dan

hey, great video, I'm from UK but really struggling to find career paths AFTER field service engineer, is there any career paths you would recommend to work towards that are more rewarding and A LOT higher-paid!

Almost any company that deals with construction of oil palt forms or oil and gas including Electrical and instrumentation contractors hire anyone who has a college degree in anytype of engineering as a field engineer and basically you do scheduling and stuff project managers need

A quick google search can provide a range. Many companies will provide full benefits with zero experience right out of college at 50K, but with experience can range up to 100K starting wage with benefits.
