Very interesting about his fairytales. I have put his book of fairytales on hold at the library and will check them out. Thank you for the recommendation!

I've only read The Picture of Dorian Grey, which I mostly felt lukewarm towards. I was totally unaware of the fairytales though so I think those could be worth looking up. I always say it, but I genuinely enjoy these author videos so much 😊🎭

I enjoy making them! 😊 They don’t tend to perform all that well (some do over time), but I will keep doing them now and then because I like to 😉 If you’re going to look into his fairytales: I like the Star Child a lot.

@@cafeaulivre That's a shame, Bart. But it's nice to just do something for the love of it too 😊 Thanks for the recommendation - I'll add it to my list 📚

I love Oscar and it’s a long time since I read the picture of Dorian gray , I agree his plays should be seen in play/movie form rather than read but I can say that of most plays but when I read de profundis , omg .. I felt so much for him.. and rather than a love poem to boycey I saw it as more of a reflection on his behaviour and of life itself .. (refers to himself as playing the “dandy”)and when he speaks of his mother (and he was particularly close to her , I could feel the heartbreak) I also enjoyed the part were he speaks about some of his work and what he wanted people to see in them like Dorian gray. De profundis is so beautiful and raw almost to the point of tears I have read some of his fairytales and found them to be as I would expect from Oscar so beautiful .. he paints with words … I don’t know if this is true or not but I heard boyceys father was sending threatening anon notes to Oscar in public places that voiced that he would ruin him and so this might explain his actions if it did happen. ❤ thank you for the video as always , you were brilliant and informative x much love all the way from Ireland 🇮🇪

I agree, in De Profundis, we see a broken man, who regrets a lot of decisions he makes. On the other hand, I do also wonder if it was not meant as a PR stunt as well: a public condession and walk of shame, to get back into good graces. Around the same time, he publicly denounced his former way of life, via his wife, something that wrecked Bosie. Queensbury did not just verbally abuse him, he one night showed up with a henchman at Wilde's lodgings and physically threathened him, causing Wilde to leave London for a while. Bosie was the instigator to actually go to the police in the end, which triggered the three trials. It shows how vulnerable he really was under that blasé mask of wit and jokes.

@@cafeaulivre you could be right there might of been an element of that in it too, being who he was (not famous but infamous as he put it and he would of been intelligent enough to know that after his death if not before it would end up being read by the public) it does make sense . His intelligence was too much for the ordinary joe soaper of his time in my opinion. Another part of me thinks that he may have said that because his children were not allowed to see him and their surnames changed ( I think to Holland, could be wrong) and that is something that seems to have affected him very deeply as it would any loving father. He did end up living most of the rest of his life with bosey? Bosey I heard though at the beginning of the relationship would not leave Oscar alone and was absolutely obsessed with the picture of Dorian gray .. basically idol worshipped and it is said that Oscar tried to break ties and guide him to go about his studies etc and then his father comes after him so he was a little bit wicked! 😂😂

Have you heard the clip on KZbin of Oscar reading ballad of reading gaol? It’s very crackly and if you squint your ears you can make out his voice , I wish someone would fix it like they did John Lennons voice for the new Beatles song 😂

Constance indeed changed their names back to Holland after the divorce. She was willing to take him back initially, but when he wrote to Bosie in a weak moment, asking him to return to his side, she had enough of it and filed for divorce. Bosie did return, but it was clear both were very different men now and under the guise of a holiday trip to Rome, Bosie left and never returned, which was of course another blow. Long people have speculated Oscar committed suicide, which he didn’t in the literal sense, although I do believe the neglect of his already weak health was intentional and with purpose. He simply had nothing to live for anymore.
