This is the most realistic and honest description of a career in geoscience that I've seen... quite well done! After taking chemistry and physics in High School, I took Geology 101 as an elective course my first semester in college. After two degrees and a 30-year career as a petroleum geologist (exploration and production) I retired in 2009. Confucius said, "Choose a job you like, and you will never work a day in your life."

As a mountain biker, i became a student in geology at 50 years old, the amount of information gathered and analysis in one year made me a knowledgeable and interesting rider to be around.. I corrected many locals guy and taught them basic principles about the area. My favourite answer is always starting with ," as a geologist we think ......." and i analyse the traffic with them. Yesterday the marshall of the mountain spent 1 hour with me when i explained to him that mountain, the soil, the rocks and, the original name of that place and plug them together... I am in cape town and it s not very easy to accuratly describe to the locals , their area, and Names of intrusive batholith and lacolith and original names . I do with a smiling confidence. Most of my local friends ask me if that rock is special or no. I always tell them , that they should tell me about it, no me as i am a foreigner. Geology is an open book , a passion for life. Tonight i am on my microscope and watch youtube with a pen and paper.

I knew someone in college who became a geologist. She had apparently always been VERY gung-ho about working outside. While I can fully appreciate its importance and why someone might find the field interesting/rewarding, it had NEVER passed my mind to pursue such a field when I was in college. I once entertained the thought of oceanography/ marine science, however, and the two fields could potentially have a lot of overlap.

Most geologists end up in environmental consulting, water resources, support for engineers, teaching, or other pursuits that often do not involve much of what is presented in this video. Full-time Exploration Geologists are kind of rare. Their jobs are often temporary. You have to be drawn to projects that tend to be risky but with high reward. Not for the faint of heart. Visionary people with some discipline. Many exploration geologists would work for free (if they could) because it is that cool, fun, exciting, and rewarding. I was originally going to double major in geology and a foreign language, but ran out of money and time so I settled for a minor instead. In graduate school I was able to research a field of my choice, as long as I conducted my research in Chinese, I chose to research water issues in rural China. I was planning on continuing to study hydrology in China, but my plans were cut short by the pandemic, and also a desire to work to provide a future for myself and my fiancee. For now I have a comfy job as an English teacher, but I just had a conversation the other day with my fiancee, and she is encouraging me to continue my studies. I think she's right. So I'm planning on working for a few more years, and then going back to school to finish what I started. I've been thinking it might be a good idea to get some books and do a little self-study in my free time, just to refresh my memory on things, anyone have any recommendations?

Hello, sir! I want to ask you out more about geologists who are working with data and information with computers and programs. Is this type of work exists only in an office format, or can it be done from houses? Is this a high level in career or you can specialise on it sooner? Sorry if these questions aren't formulated good enough, i know a little in these theme and want to ask you about it overall! Thank you!

There are a few geoscientists working from home on data, but most of them started out working in an office amd moved to home base after gaining a lot of experience in an office.

I've got 1 year to choose my lifepath. I'm extremely passionate about mountaineering, climbing, the outdoors and mountains. I'm a science lover and am in love with maps. Would this be a great field to be out in the wilderness on a daily basis? If so what are some great colleges to choose from? (Europe/America)
@GeologyUpSkill2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have a great combination of skills and passion for exploration geology. The best college is the one with the most enthusiastic people. Look at their websites to see what the people are working on and then email the people who work on projects you like. Go to the college where you get the most enthusiastic response.

Great video how would you suggest someone to learn about geology by themselves before they delve into actually becoming a geologist to make sure its the right carrer for them and they enjoy it.

There are some good introductory geology videos on youtube now for many branches of geology.

If you draw a 50km circle around the largest mines, that will be a close approximation.

Don't they have Geologists in Venezuela and Iran ?
@GeologyUpSkill2 ай бұрын
They do and some of them are very good, but every geologist sees the rocks a little bit differently. Sometimes it helps to bring in someone who has a different view.

What is planetary geologist and what they do 🤧
@GeologyUpSkill Жыл бұрын
They study the rocks and minerals from planets and asteroids to try and understand how and when they formed. This field of study provides very useful information on how and when the Earth formed.

Hello! I have been documenting myself about this domain, geology, and I come to realise this is something I want to pursue. Although, I want to know, what is the most notable difference between engineering geology and geology? And which one you think its the most interesting? Thank you ! :)
@GeologyUpSkill Жыл бұрын
Engineering geology is mostly to do with the physical properties of rocks where they are involved in various construction type projects. Geology is pretty much everything else to do with understanding how rocks formed and what they can tell us about the past and future. Exploration Geology (my field) is about finding mineral resources in rocks.
@snoosebaum9952 жыл бұрын
how often do you use calculus in your work ?
@GeologyUpSkill2 жыл бұрын
Not at all, but I understand how it works so that helps me to understand when I'm talking to an engineer or assessing a calculated resource.
@robinlaszlo3 ай бұрын
What if I just want to know why the rocks I like are formed the way they are what type of minerals can be found together and why they end up in the wacky patterns they do? I live in Michigan and our lakes have a lot of unique to the region rocks and all the "experts" around here dont seem to want to be helpful.
@robinlaszlo3 ай бұрын
Like I probably cannot pass college classes on chemistry and math but I am out in the field collecting rocks and minerals and trying to determine what minerals make up the rocks I find. I am part of many online groups where we discuss the characteristics of certain formations in the area but it always seems someone is either spreading misinformation or someone says something and it becomes fact like "there's no petrified wood in lake superior" I can't tell if that's true or not because a French Canadian says they found some on their side. The one actual geologist in all the groups I'm in only tells people that the thing they have is not something and never gives any insight on anything. I have rock keys saved on my phone, the hardness scale, and some home tools for that. Am I a undocumented unlicensed geologist sorta?
@GeologyUpSkill3 ай бұрын
There are a few online geology courses avaqilable now from universities. You could sign up for one that just covers the geology component. Or you could go old-school and find some paper text books. There are lots of cheap second hand ones around now!

I am a sophomore in highschool. In my junior and senior years, I plan on taking HL Computer Science, HL Chemistry, HL Geography, SL AA Math. Are these good choices if I were to be in the field of geology? Would universities accept this even if I don't take HL Math?

Check with the universities where you might study and ak what the requirements are for entry. My undergraduate university required physics, chemistry and maths to enter their geology degree course.

Is there anything I should do or try before I apply to university’s for geology? Thanks
