Hey Ari, this is a very useful video, I hope you will release more in depth ones. One more tip from me: once the engine has cranked, then go out for a 2 hours ride on a smooth road (avoid stop and go in the trafic) in order to let the electrical system of your bike to effectively recharge the battery. If your battery has really come to its end, then this method could not be enough. For this reason, if you have some rest along the way, then take care of parking your bike facing downhill. The recharged juice should be enough to power the sparks and the injectors anyway, the slope will help you cranking the engine. Sometimes even the 2nd gear is too short, then go with the 3rd. Have fun ;-)

This happened to me recently. Battery dropped to 11.2 volts. Stuck it on a charger for 30 minutes and she was good to go.The battery quickly went up to 13+ volts and started like a champ. The battery was reading only 30% charge on a smart charger. That power pack looks quite tempting now.

And the connection of negative cable to frame on the "dead" bike is also because the current will take the path of least resistance to the starter. The dead battery will act as a huge resistor and can make jumpstart even more difficult.

Thank you very much for your instruction. This is exactly what I need. My bike's battery is dead now and I need to jumper it for startup.
@worldtraveler86133 жыл бұрын
Being i have a degree in electrical engineering, i can tell you he is right that you cant damage the bike battery from jumping it with a car or truck or a tank battery for that matter. Electrical devices only pull the amount of current they need. The dead battery is just another load in a the circuit of the larger vehicle, therefore it will only drop the voltage from the running circuit that its rated for, and it will only pull the current its rated for. Electrons flow negative to positive, therefore current is pulled and not pushed. This is why it's always the negative terminal that sparks. Yes it is ground, but power is constantly being pulled to ground, the lesser charge. Think of how vacuum works. Air gets pulled to the lesser pressure. The cylinder creates low pressure below ambient when the piston is sucked down into the cylinder by the crankshaft. This gives the intake manifold vacuum. And now with vacuum we can run fuel pressure regulators, brake boosters... and turbos.

I have heard all sorts of horror stories about charging your bike from a car, so I clicked on this vid and it did help, damn battery virtually flat. It took 3 attempts to start the bike from the car battery, with plenty of revs to stop it dying, I thought the battery had died on me all together, this attempt to save my battery is much needed as the weather is getting colder... When jumping from a car...12 volts is 12 volts whether it comes from a big battery or a small battery. You can not harm a motorcycle by jumping it from a car battery.
@Ken-rw4ix6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely right. Whatever the component is i.e. The starter on the dead machine, it will draw whatever it needs regardless of the the provided source.
@blipco56 жыл бұрын
Kendog....Exactly. Just because that truck battery has 840 cold cranking amps doesn't mean it shoves it down your motorcycle's throat. It simply means it's available should you need it. And you won't.

+Another Millennial ...They spark a little, just don't drop them.
@81MrKMan6 жыл бұрын
Yes it is no harm to the bike itself because its voltage controlled. However, a dead battery can act like a very low impedance almost short to another voltage source, thus it is possible for the large car battery to push too much current at once in the small dead motorcycle battery if left on too long.
@blipco56 жыл бұрын
81KMan....True, a dead battery with shorted cells will tax the healthy battery. This would be felt also in the heating of the jumper cables.

Just for the record, jumping Harley Davidsons from a car is a surefire way to burn out your reg/rec, as you said most other bikes are fine, but having worked with harelys for a good 2 years I saw a lot with burned out regulators because the owners jumped them from running cars, great video as always though mate

the difference between car battery and motorcycle battery is just the amperage capacity. and it should be just fine. and i have try it. (not on harley)
@Liam_Bollocks6 жыл бұрын
Yansen Haryanto correct, however I wasn’t talking about it killing the battery, I’m talking about it killing the regulator, because as you said, the difference is the amperage, the regulator is designed for motorcycle amperage, specifically the motorcycle it’s on, not the massive amount a car or van would take
@povlhalberg53616 жыл бұрын
Liam As far as I know is the reg/rec is dealing with voltage and not amps (of course to many amps will fry anything) But I think the problem is jump starting with the car running, because the alternator in the car, makes another current than motorcycles, therefore the problem. If the car is stopped when jump starting, there should be no problem. At least I think so.

2:00 I would have said this statement was true until I jump started my SRAD 750 1996 with a Mercedes SLK 230 2002.. I was advised to turn the lights on the Mercedes whilst jump starting to help dissipate some of the power.I didn't think it mattered much so I didn't bother. Although I got the motorcycle running, later on in the week I realised the rectifier had a fault which I replaced and also had to get the stator repaired. The battery was obviously dying and for some reason though it certainly didn't help jump starting it the way I did.. So I'd advise that if you do jump start from another vehicle that has much more power than the dead batterys vehicle, simply dissipate the power as you jump start!

The past 2 weeks, i've changed the spark plugs, tested the ignition, replaced the fuel pump, and fuel pump filter, the amount of labor into the bike thus far is timeless. Tonight, I decided to try to jump it. OMG.. worked. Didn't hold the charge but, she turned on!! Between the Sparkplugs and the battery... I had no juice and no spark, I was going nowhere. I have a '14 Suzuki GSX R750, the sparkplugs are literally in the middle of the bike under everything (fuel tank, air filter..ect)

What about the now apparently ‘old school’ cranking battery that usually lives on a battery tender in the depths of the garage/shed/workshop and is only ever wheeled out for the odd cold start morning or the ‘left the parking lights on’ excuse. Best use of a big old 12V lead brick there is. It may not start your car/truck but it will easily crank a wittle motorcycle engine.

Another method when you have no jumping cable and etc. Pull clutch, run like hell pushing the bike, quickly kick up to 3rd and 4th gear, let go of the clutch slowly about half or 3/4 and wrist the throttle. Easiest is going down the slope sitting on the bike with clutch pull, up to the stated gear at the precised speed, let go of the clutch slowly, when it starting to go alive then wrist the throttle to start. Works for me to ride back home and juice the battery overnight.

Does a battery cut off switch helps reduce battery drainage when not riding the bike? (just like if it was disconnected?) I do not ride one of my bike very often so its battery always go dead and is not quickly accessible, plus I don't have power for a battery tender.
@AriH2116 жыл бұрын
It might help, but the brutal truth is that lead-acid batteries have a fairly high self-discharge rate, so even if it's disconnected it'll drain down over a few months. Get yourself a float charger and hook up a quick-connect pigtail so it's easy to use.
@TahitianRider6 жыл бұрын
Ari Henning Yeah I already have a portable jumper and planned to hook UP a Quick connect plug :) I ride the bike maybe twice a Month. Do gel batteries hold up better over time?
@AriH2116 жыл бұрын
If you have one of those old-school flooded (wet) lead-acid batteries, they all suck and will die far faster than more modern technologies like the "gel" batteries you mentioned. Get yourself a quality gel/AGM battery and keep it hooked up to a float charger that turns off once the battery is charged and it'll last you 5-8 years.
