Please change the title from Hula to Taualuga. It's Sāmoa's universal and main dances, adopted by our neighbours Tonga, Uvea, Tuvalu, Rotuma, parts of Fiji and Futuna made into there own versions from the original Sāmoan which predates the rest. Taualuga meaning the upper part of the ancient Sāmoan fales.And always the last dances of all Sāmoan dances in any sort of occasion. In the ancient times when there were no tupe people gave siapo and 'ie's as gifts. Ranging from valuable 'ie memea or other types of 'ie tóga.

It's funny how the 'au 'aiuli always thinks it's part of the culture to lie down and have the taupou stand on you yet that is the palagi way of an old fashion gentleman like in movies, a guy would lay his coat over a puddle for the lady to step on. That is not the Samoan culture uso aha. We ain't suppose to lie on our backs for the taupou to stand on. Some OG's would consider that disrepspectful. Literally! It’s actually a Tongan thing as we have a hierarchy, and a family member who is lower than the dancer will be on their back for the girl to stand on. It kind of pisses me off seeing Samoans do it just because they see Tongans do it. Mixing the culture is not the one man! Merita Amituanai I agree. Too many aiuli these days dance too close to the Taupou which is very wrong and disrespectful. They also dance in front of her which is wrong. In the Samoan custom, the aiuli must dance from a distance behind her to respect the va feagaiga between brother and sister and should only take is eyes off her for no longer than 2 seconds. Beautiful taualuga nonetheless 🙂

By my understanding, an authentic Samoan siapo is very rare. Unless you know someone who is connected to the few villages that uphold the practice or have been blessed to receive one as a gift, you will hardly see them in everyday use. They are more often stored away safely or kept as an ornament than as a utility item (used to clothe, cover, furnish, etc). Most families have a mix between them and it depends on the occasion when it comes to rolling them out for use. Both Fijian and Tongan tapa are valued and rotated in customary gift giving for Samoans. There is the option to buy siapo/tapa at market or wherever else they're sold but you're better off buying a car or forest and making them yourself lol. The money collectors looked young, can forgive them for that even if her grabbing money right out of her ofu made me cringe. Someone would've thrown a shoe if it was my family 😂
