This was not an interview. This was a conversation & it couldn't have come at a better time. Most of us a going stir crazy right now & this allowed me to sit back & push away all the real life bullshit. I have always admired Tony the actor but listening to Tony the man drew me in. This was realism at it's best - no games, no word play, just honesty...something we're sorely lacking these days. I loved hearing his insights & as much as I miss his presence on GH it warms my heart to see him peaceful & content. This was a joy & I want to thank Nancy for this wonderful gift.

Please please do another interview! This was the fastest 45 mins of my life! And I really appreciate getting a conversation with Tony where he is (to some degree, lol) just talking “among friends”. I always felt that he was sooo heavily censoring himself that I always thought, man there’s so much more to this story! And, although I’m still thinking that because he is Tony Geary, icon with years of great stories, I just felt an ease with him. I will always love Luke. And I will forever be in awe of Mr Geary!!❤️. I like how Tony was able to say how he really felt about the rape scene... Because he and GF worked hard in that scene... to show it as a rape... and it had to be somewhat hurtful for people to walk away with thinking it was a seduction... I remember watching that when I was a young teen... and I never for a moment thought it was a seduction. Especially the scenes with GF at the park afterwards. The reason people started looking at it that way... was because they were able to see Lukes softer side.... even with his rough upbringing... he still had this softer side to him. And the character of Laura was able to eventually see that in him as well... because she was able to see that and to forgive him... I think that is why the audience was able to forgive him.... but for it to become a love story... people had to rewrite that scene in their minds. But for fans to scream at the actor... to rape them... that was just sad and sick. They obviously had no clue as to what rape really is.

Teresa Dewey I thought it was also because of the chemistry between TG & GF that sent the story line in another direction,. It was like capturing lightning in a bottle & the producers didn’t want it to get away!
@coleenmcdonald2649
@coleenmcdonald2649 4 жыл бұрын
I think it was really about TG and GF and their chemistry as actors. They really intended for Luke's character to only be on GH for a short time. The storyline was intended to end in his death I believe. However, there was something undefinable between TG and GF as actors that could not be recreated. By the time they realized it, the rape was already part of the storyline and now they had to backpedal if they were going to keep them together. Chemistry such as the chemistry that we see between TG and GF is not something that happens every day. They (the producers of GH) realized there was something special happening on the screen and of course, they were going to take advantage of it.
@user-ve5ln5le9y

☝🏻☝🏻 Exactly. I consider Luke sexually assaulting Laura a tragic, heartbreaking encounter that was unnecessary because as a ‘new’ viewer watching their story unfold through replay, I wanted them together regardless, and clearly a lot of OG fans back at that time did too. But it seems par for the course for Luke and Laura, their chemistry was so explosive and their romance so written in the stars, yet there were always ppl/events conspiring against them. At least the fans he was referring to weren’t yelling ‘Fuck me, Luke’. That would’ve been…interesting.

What a wonderful enlightened interview. Thank you Nancy for this wonderful interview with Anthony Geary. He is truly one one best actors around. I read an article where he was so upset about about how they “rewrote” certain things” when he was leaving (Jake alive; Frank Smith alive; etc. ) I hope Tony chooses to come back for a short stint on gh I don’t think he should compromise on his character but I would like to see some interact with Genie. They have totally thrown the importance of her character away for the sake of budget but maybe Tony could help the peers that be the light. Thank you Tony. I enjoy watching gh on KZbin; not so much on current episodes. Powers that be listen to Tony and Nancy: character should drive the plot🙏🏻❤️

I'm happy that Nancy brought up the writers and how difficult it is for them to make every single person happy, whether it is the actor and/or the audience. Their jobs are not easy; they have their own creative ideas they want to pursue, they have people that they need to answer to and they have actors to live up to, as well. It's a thankless job sometimes. And it's nice knowing that the current regime-who I do believe is fantastic-is open to an actor defending their character and speaking up at the appropriate moments.

I am just watching Luke and Laura’s story unfold for the first time and OMG I am completely addicted! Those two are breathtaking. It burns my soul to hear what has been done to their love story after Genie initially left the first time, which should never have happened. They should have let them leave together, happy. Where are the Spencer children? Grandchildren ? 😢😢 Luke in the early days wanted what Laura represented. She was the love of his life. Don’t know how long GH will survive but in my heart they need to find their way back to each other soon because life is short and real life is depressing as it is these days. IMHO. Great convo.

I really hope the story is really Luke faked his death to protect Laura from Victor and to bring Jane Elliot back. IF not, why would they kill an iconic beloved character off when he hasn't been on in 6 years?

I thought the writers made Luke a bad, deadbeat, neglectful dad. How funny. In the 90's I thought Luke was a good dad. A protective, loving dad. He was great with Lucky. But later, horrible with Lulu when she was growing up. I didn't like Luke as a broken down drunk guy. I think a lot of fans didn't either. Because Luke always wanted to be "up there with the Webbers". He complained to Bobby about getting out of the gutter enough. But when the do, like Luke becoming Major, it seemed like, Yes, he made it!! Luke finally made it! But later, he like loses it all. It was a sad ending of Luke Spencer.

Great casual and raw interview. Loved being in the living room with you all. As to the friction over the connection soap actors have to their characters, it is different than most actors who rehearse, do a short run of a character on the stage or screen and then move on to another show, another character. For you guys who live, breathe and develop these characters for years it IS a very real, personal relationship. You become the character, the character becomes you. As the years go by, these characters become part of us all. Good writing or bad, Alexis is someone I know intimately as I have seen her at her best and worse. Since following you Nancy, I see so much of you in her and her in you. What a great accomplishment and a testament to your career. So glad you chose soaps over another medium. I miss the great characters of shows gone by and am so grateful I still get to see my Alexis, Monica, Jason, etc every single day and just like with my "real" friends and family, I get to see how they have grown and changed. Don't stop!

This was fantastic. Pitch: Reach out to Rachel Ames, please! There is a history there that hasn't been heard. She knew the originals -- Emily McLaughlin and John Beradino, among hundreds of others who have come and gone. She would be an excellent follow up conversation about the portrayal of rape in soaps as she watched in transform from something her own character experienced in the 1960's to her granddaughter, Elizabeth's in the 90's. Having Rebecca Herbst and Rachel Ames reunite for something like this would be amazing. Thanks. Stay safe.

I loved this conversation with Tony. The fans don't get enough credit. The writers don't realize the audience knows where all the plot holes are and could actually fix them, ie there is such a thing called fan fiction. I started watching GH at 11 yrs old. I actually remember Tony's first day before the perm. Luke Spencer took my breath away and I was in love! There has never been nor will there ever be another like him. Thank you Tony for making sure that the writers stayed true to who Luke really was. Nancy thank you so much for this. I've missed him too. I'm glad he's doing so well in Holland.

Genie had to be careful but I know Nancy will take care of her so she doesn’t get taken off contract again. When Genie was taken off contract that proved Tony’s and your point that plot drives the soaps now not characters. 😪

So good to see Tony, thanks Nancy!! Love learning that what we see as viewers has changed so much, & what workplace challenges, these demands in place to stay on the air for your FANS, presents for you already hardworking actors! Feel more informed and more knowledgeable, and what’s better than that ? Bringing the education, excitement and engaging repartee!

Love the Luke Spencer character. Totally agree with all he said about GH. I’ve been watching since I was a young teenager and now I’m 58 😁. A lot of changes over the years. And of course as a fan, don’t always agree with them 🤷🏻‍♀️. This was great!!! 👍🏻😉

What a treat to see and hear him today. He was so passionate in his performance as Luke. 🔥🔥🔥 God the only other man I’ve seen on TV kiss the love of his life like that is another Tony Goldwyn from Scandal (with Kerry Washington). I love watching couples with off the charts chemistry that is still there decades later ❤️❤️ Sigh I wish I could see Luke and Laura together again for good on GH and ride off into the sunset together 🥺. #80sForever Luke and Laura forever!!! Guess I’ll just have to keep watching that Kiss On My List LnL tribute video…….

I believe the character of Luke always had a moral ambiguity, even in the midst of the character's most normalized moments. While Mr. Geary may have felt that Luke had become too domesticated, I don't believe that was ever the case - and maybe that was due to Mr. Geary's tenacity. What made his scenes with Genie Francis and Jonathan Jackson so wonderful in the early 1990s was their onscreen chemistry that coincided with the push and pull of Luke's insane desire for conflict. Even when being the doting husband and father, the character would consistently put his family in harm's way, allowing for drama, action/adventure, love, discord. The only thing fans never fully received was resolution with regard to certain aspects of the character when Luke Spencer walked off into the fog. The character was built around: His love for Laura, his humanity; his dysfunctional family, his desire to be better than what he was raised; what little family he did have, without Bobbi and Ruby the character would have become a more criminal entity; the inability to accept when he had it good, thus the desire to be put in harm's way. I believe there was an overkill in the effort to make Luke Spencer less than normal to the point where the fans felt a little put off. But, I also believe that Mr. Geary was extraordinarily gifted in what he bestowed upon us in the form of entertainment once he committed to Luke Spencer in the long term. While, I want more, and would prefer a Luke and Laura denouement that fits my imagination, I will always be grateful for what I got!

This video made me so happy that I stumbled upon it. Ironically I've been watching all of episodes of General Hospital (from the 80s) for the last 2 weeks, which has brought back so many beautiful & warm memories... which is probably how I stumbled upon this video... it showed up as a suggestion. Those early years of GH were the best years. Tony Geary will always. always, always have a place in my ❤ heart as Luke Spencer. I remember my grandmother used to collect all the soap opera magazines, (when I was a teenager), because she was SO in love with Tony Geary. She would talk about him all the time and she never missed an episode of General Hospital. As a matter of fact, back in the 80s, she would take her telephone off the hook so no one would interrupt GH. I agree with Tony when he said he didn't want to change the character of Luke into a good husband or loving father. I loved the version of Luke that he was in the "Luke& Laura" days. I loved the 4some of Luke, Laura, Tiffany and Scorpio. As soon as the character of Luke started to change, sadly I lost interest in GH and stopped being a dedicated watcher. Anywho.... It is so beautiful to watch this interview with Tony, and to see him living a happy life, in a place he has dreamed about and worked so hard to get to. There aren't many people in the world that I can say I would love to meet, (because I've never been star struck) but Tony Geary would be one of them. He just seems like the type of person you could get lost in conversation with. His soul just seems beautifully deep. (I could be wrong) Anyway. Thank you for this interview and God bless everyone in these changing times and may everyone stay safe, happy and healthy.

Fascinating! As a viewer, I was enthralled listening to Nancy and Tony's conversation on their creative process. Watching soaps for most of my life( I'm 62) I can honestly say that I have tremendous allegiance to the characters. It's interesting when a new actor takes over the role of a character and makes it their own but still leaves the character intact for the most part. Case in point, when Laura Wright take over the role of Carly she added her own brand of acting Carly but never changed the essence of Carly's character. I have to say that she's my favorite Carly. Kudos to Laura. I'm so lost without my soaps these days and am anticipating fondly but patiently for their safe return. Love you, Nancy and Tony.

I've watched GH since 1971. Nancy, Anthony and Stuart Damon are the only actors I wrote letters too as I was so moved by scenes played (Should have written to Genie Francis too). Our Governor decided his news conference had to be on in GH's time slot. I suddendly realized not seeing the show, I wasn't quite as depressed. Sadly the show is all about bad guys being good and good guys being incompetent. This interview makes me long for the good old days.Where the bad guys weren't all bad and the good guys won once in a while (forgive me for using "guys" . The female characters always drove the show.) Nice to see Anthony Geary again. Thank you.

I watched some of the 80s and most of '92-'98 online - all from before I was born - and I think it was so good...there was a true sense of community, the characters were real, the stories were compelling because of the characters - their disticinct personalities, desires, and humour - and because there was such honesty to their relationships and struggles and grief and love. The show flowed like real life, no matter what the storylines. I'm sure people work hard on the show, yet when I try to watch what's on now, it's not the same in quality at all - and there's such talent there. It's sad and I'm grateful for the saved episodes.

Thank you for the great show. And thank you to all actors that fight for your characters. I believe that the actors and the viewers are more invested than some of the writers. Without you fighting for your characters, they could have ended up like Dr Tony Jones. ( That one broke my heart)

Grown ups making choices for themselves, consenting adults, is VERY different than what you are talking about!! Your over generalization is so backwards and simple. Laws exist for a reason...but outside of that, other people's business is none of yours, or mine.
