Yeah, the design is pretty clever and very simple, altough a lack of automatic return etc. would be mandatory in professional use but in hobby use this head makes possible to bore or face parts that cannot be fitted in the lathe.

@@GarageOfTool the lack of return is not a big deal. It would still be useful to cut circlip grooves etc. I have a small all wahlopter which is nice but a pita to use. That design looks DIYable

@@wktodd By the way, I bought Wolhaupter UPA3 boring/ facing head and when using fast reverse, it does not release the friction clutch as it does in normal feeding direction. Is this normal or how does your head work? I haven't adjusted the spring yet since it stops fine in normal feed.

The UPA1 uses the same clutch for both directions , when it comes under significant load, it overcomes the button detente and stops. I'm sure i have a copy of the manual on pdf somewhere, but a quick search has not located it . If I find it I'll send it to you.
