SoCal 'disaster dogs' saving lives in Turkey-Syria earthquake zone

Rescuers in Turkey and Syria are getting much-needed help from dogs trained for these kinds of disasters - including some from Southern California. Here's how they get mission-ready.

I lived in Samoa from 15-18 and I had a dog, that was himself the leader of a pack. So when we'd hunt boar, or search for kids strayed into the jungle. After we found one of the 6 year old killed by boar; they found his feet and shoes and a few lost thread ( ive been lost at night in their jungle, it's intense. Feels like it wants to eat you. Something is always watching you. After that each family went from throwing rocks at dogs to owning and loving them. They were disgusted by how I cuddled with Mr good boy, Pulo.

People were throwing rocks at dogs?! Humans domesticated these animals and then some turn on them and start treating them like trash. This is how low humanity can go.

Thanks to all the brave dogs, that rescued human lives! Rescue dog, Proteo, RIP! Animal lovers, please let's think of Turkish organisations, who rescued abandoned animals, e.g. cats and dogs in the earthquake regions, too. Traumatized pets, that lost their owners, need so much help now as well. One of those organizations is Haytap, Animal Right Organisation in Istanbul. There aren't comparable animal shelters in Turkey like in Germany or other EU-countries. Mainly abandoned dogs in Turkey need help. Stray dogs often are brought into forests or dump regions in Turkey, where they depend on animal lovers or animal organisations. They need donations.

Huge RESPECT to the dogs and their trainers and handlers! Saving lives is a truly noble profession. Just one question: Why can't the dogs be fitted with protective booties with rubber soles to give traction on treacherous surfaces? Broken glass and torn metal can cause horrible injuries, their paws are vulnerable!

Yes, so true. But in Turkey dogs are seen as "unclean" animals by many people. That's why not many of them live in houses there. Cats are loved much more than dogs in Turkey.

There were several teams with rescue dogs from different countries in the earthquake regions, e.g. I.S.A.R.(International Search and Rescue) from Germany. All of them need donations. I chose ISAR for donating, because I live in Germany.
