Trade unions have described the working conditions as modern slavery: Migrant workers from across the world built the football stadiums in Qatar - in dubious conditions. This is their story.
Sujan Mia came to Qatar from Bangladesh hoping to enable a bette rlife for his family. He returned in a coffin, with the circumstances of his death unclear to this day. Malcolm Bidali from Kenia came to Qatar to work - and ended up in prison. Today, he's back in Kenia and wants to help other migrant workers. Despite the attention surrounding the Soccer World Cup, change seems to be hard to come by in Qatar. A report by Florian Nusch, with illustrations from Aleksandra Kononova.

I'm British and worked in the oil industry in Qatar back in 2007. I was based in Doha, the capital. Even back then there were many building sites in the city, everywhere you looked I saw all those Asian workers, many of who looked like walking skeletons. I discovered that most had to pay back then $2,000 for a work visa that, based on their ghastly hourly rate of $0.50, would never be able to pay back the $2,000 loan. I could have written a book about some of the hellish stuff I witnessed in Doha. But I should just add, this is the Arabic attitude to poor Asian workers - they don't give a sh*t!

Yea yea blah..! Blah..! Blah...! But you still benefited from the qatari money. It's incredible how white people are hired as engineers, city planners, managers and all the white collar jobs in these oil rich middle East countries, yet they clear know how they these people treat their manual labourers. All you do is complain and virtue signal but still getting paid by the same people you despise. I guess the money is sweet and more important than standing up against human rights violations.

@@shhhyou4703 i worked in occupational health and safety in qatar and other middle east contries .. i know very well about what is going on there .. i witness this kind of things every day .. how workers are treated and how the laws are respected .. the only reason is the incompetency of higher authorities. I’m a Filipino-American who used to work in Qatar in construction. I left when the pandemic happened. I’m lucky because I was holding an American passport & was given a great opportunity to practice my profession with a nice package. Yes, there is discrimination. I’m originally from the Philippines & those Filipinos I’ve worked with of course, get a lower package just because they’re holding a Philippine passport even if we have the same positions & the same amount of job. So you can just imagine how much less the laborers are getting. When I left the company, pandemic was at it’s peak, but construction was still on going & have very low regard on the health of the workers. Even if they are positive for covid, they kept on working.. and the number of positive cases were not reported because the company will be at risk of putting the project on hold. I have fond memories of Qatar & was grateful for the opportunities given to me. But I cannot speak on behalf of all as I witnessed first hand the injustices that are on going there.. I’m sad that this FIFA will forever be tarnished because of these human rights violations & all the issues of corruption that happened..

strongly agreed but As expected, what more can you expect from a strong blinded country who clearly classed everybody else’s apart from themselves as a second class citizen. Had the Qatari came out and announced that all visitors is treated as in human rights the same way as the local do you think people will still go. or in short term or long term economic support - FIFA themselves as well as the Qatari will have a chance to generate cash flow till now. Ha ha talking about respect, come on get real because only truth leave trail, and if because the majority around the world have the same mutual agreement and feels that Qatar is the wrong choice then there must be a good reason why. Do we really think people wanted to be talking about human rights when going to the match or being hyps up about how far the respect issue should go when visiting a country. More importantly let’s hope every workers even till now and those that died to make Qatar richer get all the compensation they deserved both in moral human rights and cash from FIFA. Let’s hope south east Asia countries have a chance to host because FIFA charges so much, estimation in South east Asia alone so far paid well over 1.2 billion£ - just to be able to get the licensing on air in watching the sport and this doesn’t even included all the 62 match. In Southeast Asia there’s only about 11 countries and less than half may be 2 or three that is a stong muslim country. (Brunei, les temor and Indonesia). Hence, as for the rest liked Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Philippine etc,is one of the most tourist pack destinations and homosexual, alcohol consumption isn’t banned by tradition or culture as it is a personal liberty. So all football fan can guarantee to get a true &real welcome treat that is justified which isn’t based on culture or tradition and certainly you won’t be arrested if you are a trans walking the street drunk after the match based on the belief that you have ‘a damaged mind set’ It is the central of the north and west Asia region that leads to the Middle East area which is strongly oppressive in human rights especially if you are from a very tradition conservative culture background. Otherwise it will be like saying all Europe is all the same where human rights is a concern. Therefore FIFA had made the wrong choice by given Qatar this opportunity in sport washing. Why didn’t this promoting opportunity go to other country who need more help and investment Or even central Asian country like Japan/Korean would have made a better choice than Qatar when it comes down to equal right as representative for hosting the World Cup. At least all of the countries mentioned here had reformed in basic human rights for women, sexuality, moral and way of life and more over still being able to maintain theirs culture, tradition and beliefs at the same time. Nevertheless having WC in Qatar will be a disaster which was predicted since the announcement 12 years ago. Though a good point that was made from the report is that FIFA is no longer about football and clearly now became a very dirty rich man game. Btw, the most resent update is that alcohol will now be banned 3 hours before the match unless you are in the executive box, and my heart go out to those fan who is already in Qatar and believe that everyone is welcome. Lie rules the world and after this WC all that who had suffered will be forgotten. Talking above power of money, political and football.

I worked in Qatar in a well paid expath job between 2003 and 2013 mainly working with the American military based in Qatar. I know precisely about the issues facing migrant workers in Qatar. They are paid starvation wages often 200 dollars per month, or less. I spoke to one worker who hadn't a day off in 4 years. I observed the area or ghetto where most of the labourers, all men work. It's an area in the industrial area of Doha, near Al Sayaliah US army base. I sheltered by invitation during a sand storm in of the housing areas . I never saw anything like it in my life 15 people to a room, and rats running all around the room. It was inhumane, and the Qataris didn't care, there is bonded labour a form of legalised slavery where workers can't just leave work unless their sponsor ako current employer agrees, and they have to give the sponsor ako employer their passport, so they are trapped like rats in a cage. Like slavery in the confederate stateside America notices are posted in newspapers saying an foreign country worker has absconded from his or her duties. I know one worker who hasn't had a day off in 4 years. It's a dreadful country with a dreadful human rights record, shame on those who bought the beautiful game to hell. It's shameful.

Europeans killed millions of north africans like in algeria, Libea and many many more and on top of it they stole too much from their land. Have you ever thought about how Eiffel tower was built? Where dis all that metal came from? What about north and south america? Killing hundreds of millions of red indians to take their lands? What about in Canada where they just discovered how children of red indian background were murdered… just a few decades ago? Look at what Israelis are doing to Palestinians but everyone is so silent? When it comes to Ukraine they all talk and they supply them with weapons. Think twice before you speak. All this happening is because they are pissed at qatar for hosting the world cup perios

@@James_318 There was an open day for Ferrari World Abu Dhabi theme park in the capital city of my country (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and I got the job. But the living conditions and food was much worse than what was promised. Then, my girlfriend got blacklisted and deported for something she hadn't done. Later I found out the management lied to us about the whole process, telling us she'll come back. The management (mostly Westerners) were treating us like disposable goods, almost like slaves. The Philippinos and Indians were actually treated like slaves. And then I got diagnosed with cancer... Luckily my medical covered it, even though my bosses were unhappy with me not being sent back to my home country instead. But me being white, managed to at least get something out of that horrid place. There's much more, but I'm writing a book about it. 🙂
@Noukz37

@@James_318 Well Eastern Europeans are treated the same by the employers, but because were white, the customers don't see the difference, so the employers save a lot. We all lived in a so called "Hospitality Village" which was basically like a prison, in a remote part of Yas Island, far from everyone's eyes. One would get a roommate to share a 18 m2 steel container that has one ancient AC. At least our HV had international people. Other HVs were strictly Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Philippines, only men of course, six per room and some even without AC! They would take them to work in a bus without AC and even in the back of big trucks/lorries. My HV got minibuses with AC at least. I'm focusing a lot on ACs because the summers get up to 60 degrees in the city, and the official numbers are 45, since by law there should be no one working outdoors if it's higher than that. Of course, the employers would force the workers to slave it out regardless of the weather conditions. And I didn't even mention the horror stories of Filipino nannies.

The saddest part about this is the fact that this happens in almost every country in the Middle East. The only reason the Qatar is in the spotlight is due to the world cup. UAE, a neighboring country recently hosted a World Expo. Countless lives have been taken but it has never been addressed by the government and was swept under the rug. My parents still live there and earn a good salary but the people who work these hard labour jobs are treated so inhumane. not only that.. you're paid based on where youre from. So if youre from a western country you'll get paid much more than someone from a south asian country for doing the exact same job. The amount of money they put into this is ridiculous, billions of pounds for stadiums they will never use again and the metro line that was built purely for the world cup. Instead of building stupid one-use buildings and paying celebrities millions to make appearances they should compensate all the families and pay workers a decent living wage.

Arab nations, USA, Europe , even Australia heavily depends on migrants from labor surplus poor nations. The nations heavily depends on remittances to sustain. But labor regulations should be regarded.
@cyberfunk3793

Europe doesn't depend on any outside migrants and there are poorer areas inside Europe that have many willing workers for low paying positions. Also any worker that arrives to EU has very high level of legal protections. Obviously some employers will try to break the law but the laws themselves are good and criminals can be reported to police that usually actually do something.

@@stephenyawarmoh3919 What would that prove? I didn't say there aren't criminals that aren't trying to break employment laws but as I said the migrants have a chance to report such crimes to labor unions and even to the police and not all police officers in Italy are corrupt.

The thing is that a lot of those don't have this type of slaves. Many of those countries their biggest issue on had is avoid deportation, in Qatar they can't even return if they want.

But here in Australia, they are paid! if you work hard and know what you are doing, one can make a reasonable wage, I have a friend whom comes from another country and works as a fruit picker and he will often take home OVER $600. a week, at the moment he's in S.E.A. on holiday paid by his labour from fruit picking.

It is really important to show the world how bad the workers who had to build some buildings needed for the soccer world cup were and are treated. This won't change much right now but it might change the future for the better... and for now, ignore the world championship.
