Don't watch much SoccerAM, but this series has been absolutely brilliant. I'll never look at a match with dodgy decisions the same way again. Anthony Taylor has gone up massively in my estimation as well. Every player and supporter needs to watch this, imo, but this goes double for people doing commentary - they need to understand what goes into making these calls so they can not only rag on the refs when they get it wrong, but give them substantial credit when they get a difficult call right. You rarely hear "Great call by the ref!" on commentary, but perhaps it should be heard more often.

This series is absolutely fantastic, not just for providing a viewpoint into the mysterious world of match officials, but much more importantly it's humanizing these figures who are forced to play the villain every week. Prior to this series I don't think I'd ever seen a proper interview of a referee or even heard one speak, really (except maybe Howard Webb as a guest pundit).

Watching rugby and seeing how the players respect the refs and their decisions is something I wish footballers could reach some time in the future. Just recently I was watching Lions vs the All Blacks 3rd series where the ref awarded a scrum instead of a penalty to New Zealand for an "accidental offside", this happened in the last 2 minutes in the game and it proved to be the biggest decision of the match as the game ended 15 all. I myself personally think it was the wrong decision and many other people including pundits after the game all thought it was the wrong decision, but the way the players took it in, they never argued nor did the whole team gang up against the referee, cussing at the refs. Premier league referees have huge pressure on them, they are match officials in the biggest league in the world. The game moves so fast, and their calls needs to be made in an instant. They are prone to making errors because there are many variables in the game. I hope this series makes people realise how hard it is to be a ref. I think they're one of the most disrespected figures in the sport.

The way in which he did it however wasn't, i think it was more of putting the issue or debate to bed and giving the referee an opportunity to speak to the public without any overly harsh stereotypical views being added to it.

I really don't think refs get enough respect in football. Just look at rugby. Also I don't understand how rugby are so advanced in video technology and we are still faffing about with tests and trials and messing it up!

I think Anthony Taylor is a really good referee very honest referee I can remember when he used to be slaughtered by Supporters or Managers and he is a really good referee. I am only 15 but I do remember.

Because most things can be boiled down to simply being errors, it's only major, 'institutionalised' aspects of refereeing to discuss meaning I only have two real complaints of referees at the moment. 1. Diving and simulation being turned a blind eye to. Yes it's difficult and yes it's liable to get abuse and criticism but far too often do we see a ref simply wave play on to signal no foul when it's hard to understand in that particular event how the player hasn't attempted to cheat. "Contact" (that embarrassingly misunderstood word) doesn't mean the player hasn't attempted to cheat- anything that isn't natural (i.e. choosing to go down) should be classed as simulation. Also- an extra point- after the likes of Vivian Foé, Puerta, Muamba, Nouri etc. the idea that players would risk the lives of their peers by repeatedly feigning injury is disgraceful- we all shout "Play on! Ignore him!" because we know the player is faking it. That could risk someone not getting immediate treatment for a very serious incident. 2. Players being awarded free kicks for being weak/ "Too forceful" - no player should have to reduce their intensity to cater for an opponent. Players are now being rewarded for being weaker than the opposition just because the results look like a foul must have occurred- shoulder barges are perfectly legal still! The second part is something which I think has been influenced by commercial interests to keep big name players on the pitch as much as possible. The idea a challenge could be "Too Forceful" is antithetical to the concept of professionalised sport. It should be that as long as the technical aspects of the challenge are correct a player can put as much or as little force or effort into the challenge as they wish- otherwise surely a strong player has to consistently reduce their force to not exceed this imaginary, arbitrary line compared to a weaker player simply tackling as they wish. It's absolutely wrong and needs to be thought through a great deal more.

No way did that stag-do affect his game, it's purely an unfortunate coincidence. Think of every time a referee has made a mistake, were they all on stag-do's prior? No. He's human. In his mind the last thing he saw was a handball by the defender, and to be fair to him I've seen far far worse decisions given. I think a fairer question would be to Nev and Carra, did partying and breaking curfew ever affect your performance as an athlete.. Props to the ref for an honest evaluation.
