Ahh I love this video! I’m so glad you explained that just because something is a social construct doesn’t mean it’s fake or unimportant. I see people using ‘social construct’ and ‘fake’ interchangeably wayyy too often. Also loved the location changes and progression of the video itself. Good stuff!

Thank you :3 I actually did the story aspect out of necessity. But I had way more fun with this video than normal so if people like it maybe I’ll play with locations more.

I also loved how explaining that just because it's a social construct doesn't mean it's fake which is probably what rubs people up the wrong way as they may think you are claiming that their family is fake when that obviously isn't the case. It means it's not in stone and is malleable. I have seen the term of family explained many different ways in fantasy and real world. A book I've fantasy book I've been reading calls itself a Harem, but the main character loves and cares for his wives and children like any typical family. People who are unrelated, but raised together consider each other family due to closeness. In orphanages the kids consider each other family too. To claim a family is only genetic shits in the face of these family units. I guess that commenter thinks Superman's Earth family aren't a family?

LOL okay I give up. I agree. I agree. Gender is a social construct. Although, for me it helps personally to think in terms of things being on a spectrum. Like the emotions of 'fear' and 'anxiety' are different but can be considered on a spectrum with each other - you have a fear of something right in front of you, but an anxiety about something far off - and inbetween is a mixture of fear and anxiety. So I think the same is true of sex and gender. Anyway, trans rights now and everyone should have free stuff now as well.

This is my first video of yours! Was really excited to see you had a channel after you were on the Shakestream. This was a lot of fun to watch, and it definitely made me think differently; thank you!

Borders are social constructs, aha, I didn't know that!

Ones enforced by laws, but yeah. I mean the gender binary was enforced by the church and kings for decades before it stuck. And in the end they had to burn 1000s of people as witch’s so that the only people left where the ones who conformed.

Loved this. I've been watching a show on W where this person visits unusual family setups. First episode was a poly/open marriage with really cool and down-to-earth group in London. Their Thrupple (that was the term they used) broke up when the third member of their group moved back to Australia. Family is not just genetic as that spits in the face of adopted family members. It'd be like if I told my nephews they weren't really my relatives because my brother is adopted. That'd be a really shitty thing to do. Or how my aunt's boyfriend helped raise her kids like they were his own and his death shook them because he may not have been their biological father, but he was there for them, payed his way in work and supported them.

Great video! I think what "social construct" really means is something a lot of people could stand to learn more about.

I love this breakdown and I'm really trying hard to accept this idea, which I would much rather trust. But the problem is where I can see how one could argue that sex influences gender? And if sex always influences gender in a pacticular way then at some level there are inherencies in gender and I don't think that has been soundly enough argued. Now there is an interesting argument that sex is a social construct itself but then that creates a weird argument where we could say humans being bipedal is a social construct. At a certain level it is but it's clearly demonstrable that humans as a species have adapted to being bipedal.
@AliceQuinnRose5 жыл бұрын
If you were to argue that in many cultures sex has influened the genders that culture has I would agree with you. But it's still important to agknowlrege that sex and gender are seprate things. Yes, sex might inform the shape of a cultures genders but it isn't the same as gender. And no sex isn't a social consruct. If you wanted to arge that the binary model of sex was socially constructed then you'd probably have some legs there. But I'd argue that the binary is more so just a scientific mistunderstanding. A missunderstanding which has informed the shape of the gender binary that cultures in the english speaking wests have held for a long time now. More on that in my intersex video though.

It’s an emergent behaviour in response to a man made system. But no. I’d argue it’s not. It’s not really something we structure our lives round. But thank you very much for the engagement. I hope you enjoyed the video x
