The welfare state is a concept of government in which the state plays a key role in the protection and promotion of the social and economic well-being of its citizens. It is based on the principles of equality of opportunity, equitable distribution of wealth, and public responsibility for those unable to avail themselves of the minimal provisions for a good life. The general term may cover a variety of forms of economic and social organization. The sociologist T. H. Marshall described the modern welfare state as a distinctive combination of democracy, welfare, and capitalism. Modern welfare states include Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, as well as the Nordic countries, such as Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland, which employ a system known as the Nordic model. Esping-Andersen classified the most developed welfare state systems into three categories; Social Democratic, Conservative, and Liberal. The welfare state involves a transfer of funds from the state, to the services provided (i.e., healthcare, education, etc.), as well as directly to individuals ("benefits"). It is funded through redistributionist taxation and is often referred to as a type of "mixed economy". Such taxation usually includes a larger income tax for people with higher incomes, called a progressive tax. Proponents argue that this helps reduce the income gap between the rich and poor.

In America the welfare state perpetuates poverty by incentivizing single parenthood and lower income jobs. People that are afraid to lose their welfare benefits will work less hours and lower paying jobs to remain on said benefits. Many mothers will opt to stay single because welfare acts as a replacement of parent, therefore making single parenthood more prevalent. Just look at the black family which survived through slavery and Jim Crow just to be undermined by the welfare state.

I am in the UK which uses the first type of welfare state you mention in this video. The UK system is terrible due to how it treats the unemployed. Society thinks anyone on benefits are scroungers and feels sorry for the taxpayer. There is a huge divide between the employed and unemployed. Also Job Centres here have things called 'sanctions' which stop peoples' benefits anywhere from 3 months to 3 years for any sort of non-compliance. This includes silly things like turning up late for a job-seekers interview (known as 'signing on') even when it's not your fault or not attending an interview due to a medical emergency. It leaves such people hungry and prone to homelessness. I have created a video on my KZbin channel proposing a radical change to the welfare system to make it fair for everyone and to get rid of discrimination.

The issue is that something like security is not a right, and to have it is to give up freedom. I don't know where this idea that security is a right in a democracy came from, but it's quite strange and I've never heard it outside of European circles. Sadly I do not know about the conservative model enough to really argue against it, but it seems strange that it would only benefit a certain type of worker. Economic freedom isn't achieved by taking everyone's income that way and so the social democratic model doesn't really work for that. It's very much a security focused model.

All means based welfare systems should be scrapped and replaced with a Universal Basic Income. The savings on the bureaucracy alone would be substantial, as would the re-diverted payouts into the new system. No-one is left behind, and each person takes full responsibility for their basic needs. Food, shelter, and heat should NOT be considered luxuries in a civilised 21st century society. For those complaining that people will not work, well, they're not working anyway, but mostly due to not having a place of residence or basic means. A UBI would give them that security and a solid floor to build apon. It's time to stop trying to solve 21st Century problems with 20th Century thinking.

Has the person who made this video ever been to Sweden and taken a look at what the welfare system looks like in reality? If you’re on welfare you certainly do no have the right to participate in much as the payments are too low and not in line with inflation. This is most obvious when you look at payments to refugees who are waiting for their application to be considered. They get less than 100 SEK a day or 2000 SEK a month which doesn’t even cover rent and hasn’t been increased since 1992. Most people on unemployment benefit are lucky to receive 80% of their previous earnings and if you don’t have enough money from that to live on well too bad.

Therefore many capitalists in the United States are spreading that socialism is dangerous, when its in fact only dangerous for them and their privileges.

You can only look at the United States were the rich is regulating themsels, and not the goverment. but i agree with you when it comes you should get what you have earned. But regulation is needed in order for the goverment to control the cooperation and privat intrests so it is not going out of controll. The third largest federal party here in Canada is the NDP which is social democracy party and is the same party who's MP Tommy Douglas came up with the idea of universal health care in the 1960s. Even though Tommy Douglas was a democratic socialist, he often sided with social democracy for the long run and the benefit of all Canadians. Same with our prime minister in the 1960s Lester B. It rewards people who do not contribute to the system and punishes those who do. It is a system of involuntary slavery. What happens if I say no to contributing to the system? Below is a link to a debate which compares the ethics of capitalism and the ethics of socialism. I highly recommend watching it. It is very long though. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3jSY3pniM-VbK8 A mandated welfare system is unethical.
@Dovenpeis8 жыл бұрын
Ethan You are wrong on so many levels. Let us start with your first assertion, that Laissez-faire capitalism is the only ethical economic system. How do you explain that? Exactly why and how is laissez-faire capitalism the only ethical economic system? Your second assertion is that government welfare promotes stagnation. The problem with that assertion is that the very successful Scandinavian welfare states thoroughly debunks that assertion. You know, empiricism and all. So what if you say no to contributing to the welfare state system? Should I care when I coerce you into accepting it, just like you do not give a shit when you want to, and in fact do, coerce me into accepting private property rights? I say that mandated private property rights are unethical without a welfare state to correct at least some of its social unfairness.
@E_Ten8 жыл бұрын
1) It's ethical because it does not require the direct violation of anyone's rights. All other economic systems do. Unfairness is not a justification for violation of rights. That's childish. 2) Citation for Scandinavian welfare, please? Those countries operate at relatively small scales. They have had close to zero population flux, it's a homogeneous and small population. It's impractical and unjustified to assume that whatever success you can observe in those countries would scale effectively. Private property is an objective truth, not a mandated edict. It is protected by government, not instituted by the government. Others do not have claims to value you have created. You have no claim to value that others have created. You alone are the owner for the products of your time and efforts. By what means would someone else make a claim to your time and effort? Only by voluntary interactions. Trade, barter, charity, goodwill, lend/loan, etc... Imagine we both live in a dessert. I have made a well as a source of water for myself and my needs. Are you entitled to my well? John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

But what happens when I don't want to support the welfare state? Suppose I see abuse or corruption or general ineffectiveness or unintended consequences. Can I say no to contributing?
@SpaceNavy905 жыл бұрын
Can you not pay taxes in modern society? No. Thats the price you pay for being allowed access to the same services as the rest of us. *IF* you had a problem, raise awareness of it with other voters to address the issue. Or if you aren't interested in doing that and only want to keep what little money you feel taxes are taking from you, you could always move somewhere else.
We have high taxation and people dying on hospital waiting lists and living in cars the worst of both worlds

Social democracy...otherwise spelled taxpayer funded programs as opposed to equal opportunity to be self reliant. JFK would be proud...ask not what ur country can do for u , but what you can do for ur country . The Constitution says provide for the GENERAL welfare...not the SPECIFIC welfare .

02:54 "...the welfare state is just like a house; it is never finished." And that just about sums up the problem right there. "If you give a mouse a cookie..." Welfare recipients will want more and more, taxes will get higher and higher, and eventually rugged individualism and work ethic are disincentivized. Social d̶e̶m̶o̶c̶r̶a̶c̶y̶ ISM in a nutshell.

@@magnusorn7313 yeah sure, nobody is hungry in Denmark, you don't wait 2 weeks for a doctor appointment, the educations system isn't about to fail miserably because of scarcity, and the elders aren't going to sleep in shit stained underwear. Denmark is definitely NOT one of the worst places to live, but as of all liberal nations, compromises are always made in favor of the rich, for example by threatening of replacing danish factory workers and outsourcing work, if their self serving criteria (tax reduction) aren't met. The social policies aren't the problem here, the power dynamic is.

however, it is partly correct, the truth is it all depends on capital market, which is mostly ruined by private sectors. As socialdemokrats in Sweden are mostly occupying government jobs and that is the reason they always support red. Their job, salary, insurance, leave, family welfare have a robust safeguard by the law. Where as common people nothing is guaranteed. it may or may not. It all depends on your handlagare which is an socialdemokrats agent. If hen thinks hen will, then you may. For instance and best example for a so called robust social country like Sweden. Many Swedish people are out of jobs, homes, resources, at the same time Govt is taking refugees from all over, and providing them with all their requirements. Same time Swedish politicians is asking refugees to find a job at earliest, and those same politicians are giving interviews in tv and media, saying that it takes seven (7) years for a immigrants to come to a job market. What an double standard socialdemokrats ideology. This what is happening all over EU.
