Saw them last night in Fargo, ND, they were AWESOME! I've been listening to SxDx since 1985 and have never been disappointed.

They OPENED with this in Detroit a few years back. It was awesome. I was actually worried for my safety as State Theater just went NUTSO. Couldn't believe they opened with it. Awesome.

SD is one of the first original punk bands, they've been doing this since long before many you us were born. Trust me he did not have a cold. They are in fact a legend in their own right.

He didn't record it-he sang it for a local radio station with Social Distortion. I couldn't recall where I'd heard it for the life of me until my husband and best friend reminded me. They were listening to the interview with Johnny Cash and Social Distortion with me when they started singing. It was almost two decades ago that we heard it, and it's a shame it wasn't recorded.

Johnny Cash really loved this version of the song, and he did a cover of Mike Ness' (of Social Distortion) "Ball and Chain". Social Distortion has been around since 1978.

The best band is right here. there will always be social distortion because when mike ness dies there will be somebody who is willing to step up to the role of greatest punk rocker ever. it will take a while for that person to get to the point of greatness Mike is at right now but whoever is willing shall be known as a man with the heart and soul of a true punk.

Oh c`mon Cash shriners. This is a tasteful rendition. The studio version is near perfection. I like the Wall Of Voodoo version too but, this is freakin greatness. Cash just made a song that will never stop being covered. At leat in our time. I just see no end. If punks respect Cash that much it should tell you something. Just embrace it till a butcher comes along. This is a classy cover.

@theLightHouseLady24 Cash didn't originally write it, but it wasn't an American folk song either. It was actually co-written by Johnny's wife June Carter and Merle Kilgore. The first version of it was recorded by June's sister, Anita Carter. Johnny recorded it about five months later, and he married June four years later.

@jseelig4330 Why wouldn't he like it? Keep in mind, Cash is a guy who covered NIN in his final years. He wasn't a music snob, or bound simply to Country. He loved good, powerful, emotional music, whoever it's done by. I have no doubt that he enjoyed this cover.

Agreed! I've seen both SD and WOV live, and love them both. But as far as punk covers of ROF, the WOV studio version is epic. Their live version I've seen on youtube does not come close. Get the studio version, turn it up and close your eyes. From the jolting intro to the chilling guitar solo at the end it takes ROF to an extreme. SD's version is also great, but I like their original stuff better.

But Johnny Cash did tons of covers in his career. Part of his comeback was his cover of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt". He'd never have problems with someone covering one of his songs. Plus June Carter Cash wrote the song in the first place.
