I don't work well with concrete examples. Can someone tell me what a social institution is in an abstract way? I found this definition: Sociology. a well-established and structured pattern of behavior or of relationships that is accepted as a fundamental part of a culture, as marriage: This definition makes sense to me. Seem accurate?

That definition is accurate, it means institutions are group habits, they are necessary because they help us do difficult(complex, dangerous, arduous) work over long periods of time without losing focus(becoming fatiqued), sometimes institutions evolve to own infrastructure(fixed assets) which accomplishes their work even further while making the job easier, that is where the "concrete" part comes in.

N,o culture is what shapes the institutions, the values and social norms that define what the positions are within the institutions and their roles. But cultural institutions do exist, and are focused mainly on spreading and sharing the values from one or more cultures (like a museum). The social need/function a cultural institution fulfills would be recreational.
