Q: In the quickly-evolving and shapeshifting landscape of the new, digital music industry, where all music is mind-bogglingly easy to download for free, it has never been more important for us artists to change up the way we approach marketing ourselves since music itself isn't creating income anymore. What advice would Gary Vaynerchuk have for musicians wanting to make their living playing music in the 21st century?

Thanks Gary! I am an online marketing coach and I've been trying to figure out how to approach this topic. I've had musician friends tell me that they can't build their brand unless you know people. Now I can show them that I'm not just blowing smoke up their butts! Thanks

My brother's a musician and he's always said the same--but times are a'changing, yeah you gotta know people but now we have so many NEW ways to "know" people!! Music marketing has gotten to the point where unless you already have a large following online, it doesn't matter who you know in the industry, A&R doesn't care. Labels are only signing folks who have already gotten big on their own using the internet.

Totally loved the content of this video! Thanks Gary. I, myself have just started my journey to become an EDM producer/DJ (at 38!)...and to add another layer of complexity to it...I have decided to document it with video. After watching a ton of Gary's content, I now have obtained the most important variable that was missing from my journey...a kick-ass attitude! There is an insane amount of hard work lying ahead of me (to reach my goal)...but mentally I am so ready and looking forward to attack it!

Hi..Garyy, what do u think of music industry will become in the next decade? Will it be a slow growth industry as now it seems more people go into music industry and produce their own music compared to the 20, 30 music years ago. And if people is using the same strategies in marketing their music, what it will be in the next 10 years from now? What is NEW STRATEGIC that u might can predict from now that we can Use in Advance. ?

Hi Deborah. I used to work for Columbia Records, and what I saw there was a trend toward labels only signing acts that were already huge online. For the rest of the artists, it's become more and more possible to manage their own careers. The big money is usually in licensing your music for commercials/video games/film/tv, and you used to only be able to do that when you had a huge record label behind you. BUT, now all those same licensing people are going freelance--so the very people who used to license music for major companies now are taking on their own clients, but still have all those high level connections. I think what we'll see in the next decade is a continuation of this trend, with more and more freelancers who used to work for labels utilizing their connections to make money for smaller acts. We'll still have huge artists like the Biebers of the world, but it'll kind of be like how major film studios now aren't taking any risks and just doing superhero sequels. It'll all be the big budget stuff. So what this means for artists like yourself is you can keep making your music, and put a huge focus on marketing it online using social media to grow your following. A solid end goal for that would be to leverage your online following to eventually work with a licensing manager-- get one song placed well and you can pay your rent for years, hahaha.

Thanks Audrey! It means a lot to get a feedback from an expert like you which is working from the industry itself. Although make own research, it is much better to hear from the one who can give advice. I've subscribe to your channel and I hope to learn more from you while at the same time making progress in making my music. Hope you can make Q&A session at your channel too. Looking forward to it. Thanks. (^>
