So interesting you posted this...I JUST read today that social media platforms combined earned over $4 billion in ad revenue this year from viewers that were teens and younger. It really is crazy, and this time of year especially with all of the gift guides, etc.! 💜

Isnt that crazy?? I feel like kids shouldnt have this much mindless exposure, especially when they see influencers and celebrities on a pedestal and wanna be just like them… its scary.

I absolutely agree with you. This era of social media makes me really thankful for when and how I was raised. My family has never been wealthy, we had enough to get by, but not enough to just go out and buy all these luxuries that we didn’t need. So I’ve gotten kinda used to that and now I don’t feel like I “need” the newest version of everything, or luxury clothes, bags, etc (especially when they’re just not my taste at all, like I don’t even think they look good and am not gonna spend $100+ for a plain white tshirt with a little logo on it, that’s insane to me.) So I’m not even tempted by these influencers, like honestly the only times I can think of that a KZbin video, TikTok, etc has convinced me to buy something, was when I was already thinking of buying this thing and looked up review/unboxing videos to see how it worked. And I feel like the only time ads have gotten me to buy something, was food, definitely have been sitting there trying to decide what I wanted to eat and a random ad will pop up and I’ll be like “ohhh Pizza Hut does sound good right now” 😂 but typically if I’m scrolling and can tell something’s an ad, I just keep scrolling. And having been around for pretty much the beginning of social media (I’m 34 so like MySpace was taking off when I was in high school, Instagram while I was in college, etc) I feel like I still use social media pretty much the same way we all did back then. Like I don’t use social media to discus politics, shop, read the news, etc, I use it to post random thoughts I have, pictures of my dog, things I thought was funny or think friends would find funny, make new friends that have similar interests, etc. Which I also think is why I don’t have the same thoughts about social media being “toxic” as a lot of people do. I definitely think it can be toxic, don’t get me wrong, but I also think a lot of that is in how you use it and what kinds of posts, videos, etc you interact with, and how you weed out those things you don’t care about (like I love the mute words feature on Twitter, I have anything I don’t care about, including pretty much every politician’s name, muted, so my feed is pretty much things and people I’m genuinely interested in. I love room/house/apartment tours though, I use them less for things I want to buy, and more for like how they designed their space or different layouts because I’m terrible at that kind of stuff lol. Great to see a new video and hope you had a great semester, Christmas, and a Happy New Year !

My mom says the same thing, she doesnt understand the toxicity I feel from social media but I also think that having had a different mindset prior to social media helps a lot. I can see the trouble with it and avoid it but im afraid for kids who have only ever known the endless scrolling and advertisement. I liked reading your comment though and am glad that you have a healthy relationship with it🫶 happy new year!!!
