Mini-bio: My name is Brady. I'm 24 years old and am a graduate student in history. I started this channel as something fun to do while I finish my schooling. My primary area of study ranges roughly from the American Revolution through the first sixty years of the 19th century. While I am a historian (with a B.A. in Liberal Arts), I am a very new historian. I am more of a learner than a teacher, so I use the react format to do a little bit of both. Also, flags are fun, and I like them very much... and video games... and maybe some other stuff. While my videos are not all history related, this channel has a serious social studies bend to it.
Bird Note: I have a bird, his name is Peridot (Peri for short). You may see him appear in some videos and not others. While he has quickly become the channel's mascot, he only appears in videos when he feels like it. I don't force him to come on camera, he just likes being around hoomans, and I am hooman. Also, understand that birds are a lot of work, so don't go out and get one impulsively just because mine appears behaved in my videos. Bird parenting is a full-time job.

The same could be said about his stance on Slavery. He was against it but not enough to not marry into a rich slave-owning family. I think he even helped with the buying of slaves for his father-in-law, maybe even bought one for Eliza and himself.

I love that you covered the possibility that the affair might have been a cover for worse financial dealings and that eliza might have had a part in making sure his version of events persisted. I have watched too many reactions to the scene that just take Hamilton's version of events uncritically even though so much of the point of the play is the notion of controlling your legacy.

reframing some scenes from her perspective was actually kind of remarkable, it really nailed the panic of the whole situation. Kind of like, by putting her in all these "grown-ups fighting" moments, the fact that she doesn't understand what's going on kind of makes us realize we don't understand, and neither do Hamilton or the Reynolds'. This is a fundamentally unstable and fast-paced situation

Insider trading didn't become a punishable crime until the 20th century. And many of the founding fathers made government policy that would not go against their own financial interests. So accusing Hamilton of insider trading isn't really that big of a bombshell against him. Embezzlement is a far greater crime at the time, and Hamilton is most likely not guilty of that according to the evidence.

Something I love about this song is how Hamilton's literary voice changes for it. In Act 1 he really leaned into the scrappy talking and the aggressive affect. Now in Act 2, he's practically an aristocrat. He's a classed man, and his speech becomes more toned down. And right here where we're hearing HIS obviously skewed version of the affair where he has to act all innocent and helpless to his financial peers, suddenly his voice is extremely calm and humble and he specifically contrasts it with James' voice, which has even more air behind it and sounds like a slight exaggeration. He's kind of forgotten where he came from and is using the rhetoric of class against his enemies. Not to say James was a cool guy, from what I've heard he was a real shithead to Maria

Her getting the more "complicated" word right and the easy ones wrong is really familya to me. I have dyslexia, a condition that compromises my spelling (got lucky since I only have a mild version if it). I too strugled with getting the easy words wrong when I was little, but the more complicated words never where a problem. A lot of practice kinda helped with that. So I asume there is the possibility that she might have been in the same situation as I was.

Why is this song so sexy, I mean it's about an affair, which isn't, but Jazz's voice mixed with Lin's is just ....well, it's hot! Great information. I still believe the Hamilton narrative, but definitely think Mariah set him up. You need to do 'Congratulations', which was tragiclly cut from the play.

I know when referring to Maria when put context of the plotting against Hamilton, seems like she just did it for the money. But Maria WAS abused. She was a victim of domestic violence. Hamilton, as a politician from New York was a representative of some sorts, and you have to remember, at that time, New York was much much smaller. So as some sort of representative to the city, people could come to you with their problems. I know it looks like Maria was in against Hamilton, but If there was an affair, it is most likely that she came to Hamilton for help asking for a way out of the abusive relationship and Hamilton as a representative could have given her money and rent her a room or something. BUT, INSTEAD, he took advantage of a helpless women, at her most vulnerable time, and used her. And as a man at those times, the narrative he had presented to society, where Maria practically threw herself at him, seduction him, was the narrative that got accepted. I DO AGREE that she was in one way or another involved either pre-affair or during, in the scheme. But I think aside from that, there was a lot of truth in her actions. Maria was a poor that did a lot of things to survive, but she needed help.

Exactly! I don’t know if you have watched the Comedienne Katherine Ryan, but if you haven’t. Got to kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpzTfWt5bteSfas It is a brilliant argument she makes about how Hamilton, a man who was in the position of power, should have actually helped her as local representative. At least in my humble opinion, regardless of whether it was Hamilton telling the truth or Reynolds, Maria was always going to be at a disadvantage. I can’t imagine the type of things women must have had to do in order to ensure their security back then. If she really was just trying to escape her abusive husband and happened to find comfort in another man, I still can’t help but sympathize with her a bit even if it was wrong for her to do. Because that still means she was abused, only to have the man she ran to for support turn around and describe her lowest moments in excruciating detail just to save his own reputation. Like obviously she still shouldn’t have slept with him even if that was the case, but I can understand what might have lead her to do it. On the other hand, if it all really was a trick and she was in on it, I don’t think she would have had much of a choice anyways. She was still merely the subservient wife of James Reynolds, who didn’t seem to be a very good of a person. He still had all the power over her. If that really was the case, James Reynold’s probably held some sort of leverage over her in order to convince her to trick Hamilton into sleeping with her and then giving compensation for it, as if she’s damaged property. I just can’t imagine her participating in such a distasteful plan willingly. Plus she divorced him afterwards, so it’s not like they were some crazy Bonnie and Clyde scammer duo. Idk, basically what I’m saying is that no matter what the truth is, I still feel for her :/
