Gabriel Rockhill is a philosopher, cultural critic and activist. He is the Founding Director of the Critical Theory Workshop / Atelier de Théorie Critique and Professor of Philosophy at Villanova University. On March 26, 2022, He spoke at a webinar entitled Clarifying the Struggle for Socialism: Uses and Misuses of Marx's Capital. This webinar focused on both the historical and contemporary burdens of misreadings of Capital and, just as importantly, the inspiring revolutionary applications of the text.

FYI, if anyone's wondering, the name of the Nazi-collaborating company that Rockhill mentions at 7:18 is spelled 'Mannesmann Corporation' (closed captioning didn't get it right).

I tend to agree in the main with professor Rockhill. But I have memories of reports of incidents at the Berlin Wall, a hideous phenomenon and physical structure. Its sole purpose, to keep the eastern portion of Berlin's population in lock up. Anyone who tried to escape to the west was killed. Socialism's worst hour and a bad example of this man-made ideology. Small wonder many reactionaries time and again point to East Berlin and Stalin's repression as antithetical to socialism's goals for mankind. Bureaucracies with permission to jail and/or shoot and kill dissidents have no place in a socialist nation. Period. At least Fidel found the decency to ship his dissidents to the U.S. Not to mention Gorbachev who finally allowed all dissidents to leave... Be well.

You are trying to juxtapose Socialism and Communism as if they are the same thing. East Germany was Communist through and through just as North Korea is Communist.

Perhaps you should investigate the US Prison Industry Complex and the vast numbers of people imprisoned there, including political prisoners, and compare that to how many East Germans were imprisoned per capita. After getting over the shock, perhaps you can then exercise much less self-righteous slandering of East Germany. Many East Germans understand how much they lost when the Anschluss of East Germany was carried out and the West German ruling class strip mined it of its valuable assets.

It's easy to be a general after the battle. I cannot imagine how difficult it was to have to fight the western agents who, unlike socialists, have no ideological qualm against any type of crime, including genocide. How do you fight such an enemy, without using any repression? Think about it this way - the world was conquered by western imperialism, and as a result, most people in the world knew English. This allowed the US and UK to almost completely erase the Eastern nations crucial role in WWII. Think about that for a second - the people of the USSR and China took the hardest losses and did most of the fighting in WWII, and yet people still think the invasion on Normandy or dropping nuclear bombs on Japanese civilians were somehow crucial to ending WWII. How do you compete with an enemy that has such power? They were constantly trying to destroy Socialism anywhere it sprouted, with genocidal means, so how do you fight them without violence? Mind you, this isn't me condoning blanket violence or ignoring any immoral act, but putting things into context and thinking about the practicality of the situation at hand. East Germany was the most compromised due to its history and location, so it is no wonder that repression would hit the hardest there (it it did, I am bot faniliat with it).

You know, for a guy who claims to be fighting against the interests of the imperial core, he sure seems to trust and admire the words of CIA operatives quite a lot.
